Another Reader report on Pixela's CaptyDVD w/screenshot (iDVD alternative)
Another reader (Powerbook user) sent a report on using Pixela's CaptyDVD (sort of an iDVD alternative without the internal drive check) including a screenshot which I've added to the previous page on Pixela's CaptyDVD and PixelaDV.

MacPlay Beta Test of Soldier of Fortune II 1.02 Patch
While at Macplay.com getting links for the holiday sale (below), I saw this note (I don't own the game for the mac yet but have been tempted after seeing this price of $34.95...):

" Help us beta test the Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix 1.02 patch! Click here for more information "

The link goes to a page with a form for entering your name and email address with the following info:

":Soldier of Fortune II Beta Patch
Warning: The software that is part of this Public Beta may contain bugs or other problems. Use this software at your own risk. MacPlay cannot be held responsible for any damages which may result from the use of this software.
To be eligible for the Soldier of Fortune II 1.02 BETA patch, you need to supply your name and email address.... Shortly after signing up, you will receive an email containing the URL of the patch.
Your email address will only be used for the purpose of sending you the patch URL. It will not be given out to third party companies."

I wonder if this patch will address things like reader complaints on slow system performance (even with faster macs/graphics cards) in some areas of the game like the rain in the first level.

More HP comments on Printer Drivers and 10.2.2
(from an HP contact's email this weekend in reply to a post in Friday's news page)

" Mike,
Some clarification to some of the recent posts going up:

1. Deskjet printers do NOT use the Communications Application, therefore they aren't affected by the 10.2.2 cpu usage problem. If you use a Deskjet printer, you will not be affected by the problem. Deskjet customers should be able to print without the Communications Application running.

2. The purpose of the Communications Application is to negotiate the different functions of a multi-function device. For example, on a Photosmart device, there's the photo card reader slots and the printer. On an All-in-One, there's typically the printer, scanner, photo card reader, a fax, etc. Without the Communications Application running, the data can't be directed to the right device.

3. The problem is with 10.2.2 alone. This has been demonstrated (and verified) by taking the USB Kernel Extension from 10.2.1 and placing that file on a 10.2.2 machine - the problem goes away. This workaround is best done by those who speak in 2 character words (mv, cp, vi, ls, ..).

4. There are various scripts floating around that will toggle the Communications Application on and off - they do this by killing the process, and then restarting it. Before you need to print/scan/read cards, you launch the script, and then relaunch when you are done. This has been shown to greatly reduce the affect of the CPU consumption. This is probably the best workaround today.

5. HP is always working on and improving our software solutions for the Macintosh.

6. HP and Apple are working closely together to get this problem fixed and on customer's machines as soon as possible.

Hopefully this clarifies things, and doesn't stir up the hornets.

More Audiophile 2496 owner comments on OS X Carbon Sound Mgr Update
Several other Audiophile 2496 owners replied to the previous post from Greg Gant in Friday's news regarding problems he saw after the OS X Carbon Sound Manager Update:

" Hi,
Just to confirm - I have had the same experince as Greg Grant with sound out not working anymore. I was running SPDIF to my reciever which worked just fine before the update. I've mailed M-audio about the problem but no answer yet.
Best Regards - Daniel Sandstrom - Sweden "

" Hi Mike,
I am responding to Greg Gant's email to you about his Audiophile 2496 not working after the Carbon Sound Manager Update. In short, my card still works but only when the Sound Output Preferences are set to Multichannel Delta-AP. While the Analog 1/2 Delta-AP doesn't work for me I can't remember if it ever worked since I use the built-in sound for output. I also have no way to test the Digital out on my end.
Brad "

" Hi Mike!
Just a quick note
Regarding the Audiophile 2496 card.

I don't know about sound in, but out functions fine in my QS 10.2.2 with the Carbon Sound update.

Perhaps he's not running the latest driver for the card?
http://www.midiman.net/support/drivers/new/M-AUDIO_OS_X_Delta_1.1.sit
Kind regards
Peter S. "

" Mike,
I also use the Audiophile 2496, and mine seems to be working fine after the sound manager update. I only use the analog IO, however.
Dual 533 DA
OS 9.22/OS X 10.2.2 (mostly osX)
1 gig ram
ACard ata 133
Initio Miles UW scsi
Aurora Fuse--os 9 only :(
Audiophile 2496

Note on audiophile: I purchased the audiophile to make life easier for serial (as in one instrument at a time) Multitrack recording, but found the card so difficult to get working that I've been sort of downtrodden about the whole thing. I've got Deck 2.7 (os 9) and it seems that I must fiddle with the sound control panel in tandem with the Delta control panel for 10 mins or so before I either give up, or it starts arbitrarily working. Then, once it does--sometimes with Monitor Mixer, sometimes with strictly analog in/out--it has a noticeable latency. Not as bad as with USB sound, but bad enough to eventually mess up a song. I havn't wanted to update Deck or even put any money into more computer sound equipment until I find out more about this subject, cause it is really frustrating.

On the other hand, it works like a charm a) for recording vinyl, b) with the Fuse card, and c) for voiceovers in FCP in OSX. The likely problem is some unknown demon that follows me around and randomly messes-up electromagnetic fields whenever I have a compulsion to record an inspiration. Oh wait, that is what computers do naturally!
slightly techno-sardonic,
Ted Calvin "

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
