News stories of Dec. 16th, 2002:

Infoworld Praise for PowerBook G4
Apple's Hotnews page today links to an Infoworld review of the PowerBook G4 1GHz titled PC Killer on the loose (dated Dec 13th). I have to agree with their comments except for the ones on ruggedness - the painted Titanium case (and painted carbon fiber trim ring) at least in the previous models have been easily scratched (and the thin metal dents more easily than plastic).
I hear that the trim ring paint flaking issue is 'solved' now (but I have heard that before..), however a plastic case notebook (i.e. the Powerbook G3 series, iBooks, most any other notebook model) in my experience are far more rugged (and have better airport range). I don't want to open old wounds and some say that Apple may cover the issue of flaking paint on the trim ring under warranty now but see my PowerBook G4/800 review for photos of my DVI model paint flakes - thankfully not visible in normal use as they have been only near the FW port.

Still, I have no regrets on the PB G4/800 purchase - it's been rock solid in 10.2.x (never crashed to date in Jag - only rebooted when software updates required it), has a great screen, powered firewire port and unless you're primarily gaming focused - I'd pick it over any PC notebook I've seen or used. (Gaming performance is good on the PB G4 DVI models - but there's so many more titles and lower cost games for the PC if that's your reason for buying a notebook.)
If only Apple offered a slotted Superdrive upgrade for past PB G4 owners...

Story on Real Player for OS X Limitations
Cnet has a story today on the release of a non-beta RealOne Player for OS X noting it's more limited than the PC version. (No WindowsMedia format compatibility, portable device support, no ripping files, no Jukebox - but then the latter features are already in Apple's free iTunes.)
I avoided installing it as it seems to be only a 14 day trial (?). (Note: a reader quickly replied to this post saying there is a "free RealOne Player" link in the upper right corner of the Mac RealOne page.)

While on the subject, Microsoft's Mac Windows Media Player for OS X doesn't note OS X 10.2 compatibility. (10.1 native it says - as of tonight the OS X media player download page date is Jan. 8th, 2002 and VT reader comments were not kind on that version. However after posting this I had dozens of reader emails noting they were running WMP 7.1.3 with 10.2.x but noted the only browsers supported are I.E. Thanks to all that replied.)

OS 9/OS X 10.2.x iTunes Support files for Toshiba Notebook SD-R2312 (24x10x24x and 8x DVD) Combo Drive
Elmar Waldschmitt sent modified support files edited for the Toshiba SD-R2312 (24x10x24x and 8x DVD) notebook Combo drive. He sent both a modified OS 9.x ToshibaCDR file and Toshiba OS X 10.2.x Plugin file. (Note to other webmasters - please link to the FAQ page and not the files directly.) The ToshibaCDR file replaces the one already in the System Folder/Extensions/Authoring Support folder (OS 9.x) and the Toshiba plugin file in OS X (use Sherlock to search for the plugin filename location - very long path in OS X).

" Hi Mike,
this is another modified Plug-in for your database (FAQ) and the Mac community.
I have put the brand new Toshiba SD-R2312 (24x10x24x and 8x DVD) Combo into my iBook 500 Dual USB to replace the original CD-ROM. After having modified the Toshiba CDR plugin in MacOS X 10.2.2 and the authoring support file in OS 9 it does everything an orig. "Apple" OEM Combo would do: Both, in OS 9.1 an X 10.2.2 (test configuration) it boots, it supports finder and iTunes burning, it is been supported by Toast Titanium 5.2 without any probs. The Toshiba drive has two big advantages over the TEAC DW-224E I built into my previous iBook a couple of days ago.
The Toshiba drive supports cable select, so you don't have to change the firmware and second the original Apple drive door (around 35A/$) fits perfectly without any modifications.
Best regards Mike. I really enjoy your site!
Elmar"

Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee although they should work fine. (Remember OS X won't allow you to replace files like this due to permissions issues - simpliest is to boot to OS 9 to replace the file for OS X.)
I've added this info/file link to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR for future reference.

RealTek Network Card Driver Update for OS X 10.2
(from a reader email sent Dec. 13th, just getting to it)

" Mike,
A couple of days ago, Realtek has released 10.2 drivers for their RTL 8139 chipset (network cards):
www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloads1-3.aspx?series=16&Software=True#16Others

I have a D-Link DFE-690TXD cardbus adapter for my G3 PowerBook whose Ethernet port is dead, but unfortunately, did not get it to work yet. According to Realtek (the readme talks about PCI cards) it should also work with cardbus adapters.
For me no success yet (w/PCCard), but you might want to update your page
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/OSX/os_x_network_cards.html.
Cheers,
-Christian"

I've added Christian's report above to that page (in the RealTek section.) As noted on that page, often other "brands" of PCI Network cards use the RealTek chip so they may also work with this driver.

SoftRAID 3.0 for OS X to be shown at MWSF
SoftRAID's website has a note to "Check out SoftRAID 3.0 for OS X at MacWorld! Booth 2412" where they will be giving demos of SR 3 for OS X. Their SoftRAID OS X FAQ page has answers to common questions about SoftRAID for OS X. (I wrote Mark James of SoftRAID for clarification on the comment of more features and more robust RAID than OS X 10.1.x and later's builtin RAID0/RAID1 support. I'll post his comment here when received.)
Before OS X, I often used SoftRAID's drivers even for single SCSI drives, since they generally had the best performance/lowest latency of any driver I had used.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
