| DVD Studio Pro 2.0.4 Update released |
| I don't own DVD Studio Pro to check this but Richard sent a note that Software Update shows a 2.0.4 update available. I asked that he send a copy of the text from the Software Update window since Apple's DVD SP download page today doesn't list any info later than 2.0.2:
"
The DVD Studio Pro 2.0.4 update is strongly recommended for all users of DVD
Studio Pro 2. This update adds support for Cropped D-1 and 1/2 D-1 MPEG-2
video resolutions in addition to a number of enhancements and improved
overall stability.
Additionally, this update changes the behavior of the dual-layer break point
to force a pause during playback of DVD-9 projects while the DVD player
switches to the second layer. While this change will increase compatibility
of your DVD project with DVD players, you may still use the seamless switch
method. For instructions on how to do this, please refer to the following
article: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93514.
For additional information regarding the contents of this update, refer to
the DVD Studio Pro Late-Breaking News located in the Help menu or at
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n93500.

| Yamaha Cavit AP-U70 price down to $99.00 |
"Subject: Yamaha Cavit U70 $99.00, used to be $379.00 a few months ago.
Mike,
Yamaha is out of the consumer pc business. So here's a good buy:
Cavit series used to cost minimum $349.00 to $499.00
They seem to be exhausting these Cavits, check Yamaha on line
store (prices between $99.00 and $199.00).
I just finished the install on my U70 Cavit to my G4 MDD dual. You can check the specs at yamaha.com under USA computer products. (Cavit line home page is here, the $99 AP-U70 info page is here) The Cavit is very nice. Looks smaller on web image and actually tilts front to back. Connects to my G4 through usb. Sound control panel line out reads "Yamaha AP-70 usb audio." It is 20 watts per channel which is more than enough loudness sitting near a computer. I'm already imagining using this Cavit with my next computer a G5 (has optical out if I recall) the Cavit has optical in and out, analog in
2x, pc in and supports a sub woofer.
I tossed my Monsoon speaker set and attached a set of Polk 3 way
passive book shelf speakers. The sound is awesome to my ears and
pleasure although I'm not an audio specialist.
The only two drawbacks I have (I don't care about the drawbacks):
- Mac starts up the start up sound is through computer speaker because usb has not loaded as yet.
- software to change the control of the Cavit slightly is OS9 based. (requires boot to OS 9, not
classic mode he later said)
I am running Panther 10.3.2 and the Cavit was recognized immediately, I loaded no software. I did have the Griffin powerwave (didn't like it because it choked on high volume settings). The Cavit has it all over the Griffin.

| MDD G4 owner report on using CHUD tools Nap mode for Cooler CPUs |
| (NOTE: within 24 hours of posting this I had 3 of 6 readers trying it report problems like freezes, boot hangs, damaged drives, etc. - not all had the problem but just a FYI. See the MDD Owner feedback on CHUD Tools Nap mode CPU Cooling Tip in Dec. 24th news page for more details.)
Disabling CHUD Tools' Hardware System control "Nap" mode was a common fix for the 'chirping/squealing' noise from the P.S. in G5s as mentioned in this previous article, but a Mirror Drive Door Dual G4/1GHz owner wrote that enabling Nap mode significantly reduced his CPU temperatures. The current CHUD tools version is 3.0.2 available from Apple FTP Developer Tools directory as well as the usual VT/MU sites. (BTW - a recent email from a MDD owner regarding overheating CPUs said it was due to poor condition of the Heatsink thermal paste/pad. Odd for a new model computer but he said cleaning the contact area and reapplying paste solved the problem. Other cooling tips for MDD owners posted here in the past have been installing the Copper dual 1.42GHz model heatsink (appx $65.) in dual 1GHz/1.25GHz models and using a cheap PCI slot cooler.) Here's the MDD owner's comments from an email yesterday on Chud Tools Nap mode (tip he said came from 99mac.se site):
"
I think that THIS could be a very hot and importent news that I just
publiched at G4Noise. My MDD 2x1 GHz had aprox. 61°C constantly - I just installed "CHUD 3.0.2" and is now down under 40°C due to "Power naping" from this Apple application... it's very strange and I cant explain why. (I believe Nap mode lets the CPU throttle down frequently during idle periods basically, independent of the normal energy saver settings.) http://www.g4noise.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=18&t=904
Regards,
Olle J.
"
I've not tested this on a MDD personally. There might be some performance penalty for enabling Nap mode perhaps, but it may be so small as to be insignificant really.

| Reader feedback on Norton Utilities 8.0.1 update |
(updated another additional report below)
"
Mike, .... Symantec came through after all. This
evening (last night - available via their live update feature), I noticed the promised updates and they installed nicely on my G5 dual. I mention that since many reports noted problems.
Later, I found one too. Although Disk Doctor appears to work, it first
gives me notice:
"Norton Disk Doctor has come upon an unexpected problem and is unable to continue scanning the disk.
Error found: unexpected end of file.
Please try examining the disk again."
Before I can try again, Disk Doctor's regular drive screen is on and
checking the drive. The notice appears to be bogus. Odd.

Another reader wrote:
"
Updated Norton Utilities to 8.0.1 on G4 1.25 MDD with OS X 10.3.2.
Running NU from startup disk.
Disk Doctor will ultimately work but takes a long time to get past VHB Recheck.
Speed Disk, under Show Fragmented Files, will not defrag any files.
It will list the files that are not open and are availbable for
defragmentation, but when one attempts to defrag them it fails with a
dialog box that it cannot optimize.
If I start up from the CD, which has 10.2, it works fine.

This reader notes moving the install location caused update problems:
"
1. PM9600 c/w G4/800, 864MB RAM, Radeon 7000, U160 controller, USB, Firewire
etc.
2. G4/400 upgraded to G4/1000, 1GB RAM, Radeon 8500, ATA133 controller, USB2
card
3. Ibook G4/1000, 384MB RAM
Tried to install update on all three machines. Multitude of problems
thereafter. Live Update would not see updaters, Norton Launcher could not
see any applications after updating (reported not installed), Uninstaller
would not uninstall on Ibook (reported unknown error). I did not attempt to
run any utilities at this point as things were messed up.
Upon studying what had happened I realized one crucial thing. I had relocated my Norton folder
to the ëutilitiesí folder in ëapplicationsí. For some reason this confused
the hell out of the updater. It knew that it should update (as it was
running) but could not find the folder so it created a new folder in
ëapplicationsí with the new versions (generic icons). The presence of two
Norton folders caused havoc. The only solution seemed to be a complete
uninstall. Even this was bizarre as the ëunknown errorí prevented an
uninstall on the Ibook.
The point is that users should not relocate the Norton folder. The SW3
installer is demented as there is no folder selection possible during
install. I guess Symantec assumes that nobody will move it but forgets that
we are not running Windows. This has been a major stall for me & I am not
impressed. Thanks for the great site Mike.
Regards, Andy
"
I don't own NU 8 but if any other readers have seen fixes or problems with the 8.0.1 update let me know (include OS and system details in reports - thanks.)
