OS X compatible PCI Network Card Reports Updated
I've added a report from a Quicksilver/10.4.3 user on a $15 Dynex 10/100 (DX-E101) PCI card and another report on the Hawking HGA32T Gigabit PCI card to the OS X PCI Ethernet Card Compatibility page.

Adaptec SCSI card/10.4.3 User follow-up on working Backup Software
The reader with an Adaptec SCSI card that reported problems with Retrospect 6.x in 10.4.3 sent a follow-up that he's found some software that seems to work (despite the old adaptec drivers and previous retrospect tech notes on Adaptec/OS X issues)

"Hey Mike, I have great news!! There is another solution besides Retrospect and I think its time they get some recognition. I would appreciate it if you could please post this email to the site as an update to my former question.
As I write this my Server G3 is writing 22GB to my DDS-4 Tape Drive. I am not using Retrospect, and the server specs haven't changed, still using the Adaptec 2940U2B Ultra2 LVD SCSI Card, still running OS X Tiger.

The Product is called BRU LE for Mac OS X. Its made by the Tolis Group and the website for the product is here: http://www.tolisgroup.com/BRU_LE-main.html
There is a downloadable full functional Demo of the program. Its limited to 30 days and works great. It has all the features of Retrospect without the goofy interface. It works great with *ALL* Adaptec SCSI Cards and most Tape Drives. I think its time we put retrospect to sleep as if this program can work with Adaptec Cards then its obvious Retrospect has some programming flaws. Thank you so much for all your support over the years...
-Regards, David B.

Hopefully all is well but I'd want to do a restore test to verify the backup is OK. (Better to confirm that now rather than later...) I thought that software name rang a bell so I searched and found some past links on BRU - a spring 2004 review of BRU Server versus Retrospect Server 6 and an interview with Tolis on BRU for OS X from a few months ago.

Ars posts follow-up to Aperture Review
Ars Technica has posted a follow-up to its review of Aperture 1.0:

"...Based on the feedback we got, we decided to revisit our initial review and focus on two items: workflow and RAW image rendering. One bit of feedback we got on the review was that it concentrated on the individual features without going into workflow enough. For many like myself, the bugs and lacking features made the rest of the application a bit of a nonstarter (and the workflow capability therefore irrelevant) since they were fundamental problems. Since Aperture is a workflow-oriented package, we're going spend more time looking at this aspect of the program. We're also going add some more RAW conversions from more professional cameras, so many potential users are covered."

First Feedback on TechTool Pro 4.1.1 update
I've updated the page of TechTool Pro 4 feedback with 3 reader reports on the recent 4.1.1 update. (PB G3 Pismo user running 10.3.9 noting problems reported with a 4th drive partition, an AL PB G4 user reporting it seems stalled at 'gathering information' and another user noting crashes at launch which he thinks may be due to his mapping a separate "Users" partition on startup.)

CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 2 new reports added. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,355 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD-R + DVD RAM Drives:
  • IDE Matshita UJ-845S in Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4)
(noted not bootable from CD using "C" key. I asked if it was set to slave (ASP ID=1). There's an article here on Cable mods to force master mode w/PowerBook G4 optical drives.
FYI - Most later Matshita UJ-8xx model reports are filed under "DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW" category)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE Seagate ST3120026AR 120GB in iMac (OS X 10.4)
(includes notes on drive jumper settings - one setting limited drive size to 30GB)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)

Rate Your CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated
The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with 1 new report (entries later today are added the next newsday morning). Total to date: 10,140. Here's a summary of the report added (search by brand/mac model for full reports - latest reports always shown first):

  • PowerLogix Dual G4/1.6GHz in (Digital Audio) G4/AGP (rated 8)

(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the CPU upgrades page. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)

(Warning - Overclocking may not be reliable and could lead to hardware failure or corrupted data.) You can find the full reports by searching the database selecting the indicated Mac model and upgrade card brand/type. If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, please post an entry in the database. Search the database for entries from most every upgradable Mac model *before* you buy. (Searchable by mac model/upgrade brand).
