Alsoft announces DiskWarrior 4 (Univ. Binary)
(Originally posted at appx Noon eastern time here - see below for notes on changes since the original page on the license agreement.)
Matthew called with a heads-up that Alsoft has announced DiskWarrior 4 today:

" New Features in DiskWarrior 4
  • Universal Binary
  • Significantly faster than previous versions
  • Repairs invalid file permissions
  • Includes an additional suite of file and folder tests, to find problems before they cause you trouble
  • Identifies corrupted Preference (.plist) files
  • Recovers more data from drives with hardware malfunctions
  • Detects and repairs more disk problems than ever
  • Repairs and rebuilds FileVaults
  • Fully supports case-sensitive file names
  • Repairs and rebuilds Attribute B-trees
  • Repairs Access Control Lists (ACLs)
  • Plus a lot more!

Please note that to install DiskWarrior 4, your Mac must start up in Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.4.x. This is a change from DiskWarrior 3 which supported older versions of Mac OS X. Please read the system requirements for DiskWarrior 4."

  • Price is $99.95 for a single user license (see before you buy page for notes about downloadable version - The DiskWarrior download does not include the Apple System files necessary to create a startup CD). Upgrades for previous DiskWarrior customers are $49.95. (Shipping is extra on boxed/CD orders.)
Matthew noted that existing owners that purchase the upgrade do not have the option to download the new version and must wait (3-4weeks quoted) for CD delivery - I asked Alsoft why but not gotten a reply yet. (See the before you upgrade page for details.) Note: See below for comments/clarification from Alsoft's DiskWarrior Project Manager on the original page's license agreement.
Since I already own DiskWarrior 3.0x and have no Intel Macs currently, I am going to wait until after Leopard is released to buy an upgrade. (I asked if there would be a fee for a Leopard compatible update to DW4 - no reply yet, maybe TBD at this point.)
Update - Here's a mail from Alsoft today regarding the license agreement (When I first posted the above at appx noon eastern today the page originally said "Each Mac OS Computer that will or could run the software will require a separately purchased copy of the software" - that original wording has been changed now - see below. The mail that follows was before the page's wording was changed.)

" Just to let you know, the license agreement for DiskWarrior 4 is the same as the license agreement for DiskWarrior 3. Any DiskWarrior licensee may take their single copy of DiskWarrior and use it on any computer they own. The restriction is only for simultaneous use, just like just about all other software. If you choose to install DiskWarrior on multiple computers to use the hardware monitoring feature, then the licensee needs to have multiple copies of DiskWarrior, or a multi-user license.
I hope this helps clear up the confusion.
(I replied to him that *original* note on the page (in my opinion) didn't agree with that, and he replied they were changing/correcting it.)
We have a brand new web site, and that text was in fact misleading. That's why we are changing it right now. However, to be perfectly clear on this matter, the license that is linked to just below that statement has not changed with DiskWarrior 4 and Paragraph 2 of the License Agreement begins with this text:

Quote "2. Permitted Uses and Restrictions. This License allows you to install and use the Alsoft Software on any computer owned by you for the purpose of performing its functions on any disk owned by you. This License does not allow the Alsoft Software to exist on more than one computer at a time."

We're sorry we caused any confusion. That's why we are changing the misleading text and letting everyone know that the license did not change and all the same normal industry-standard restrictions apply, no new or unusual restrictions.
Thanks for taking the time to address this. Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    Rusty Little
    DiskWarrior Project Manager
    Alsoft, Inc. "

The linked page now has been changed to say:

"You may install and/or run the software on only one computer at a time but you may install and/or run the software on any computer owned by you. To install and/or run the software on more than one computer at a time, you will need a separately purchased copy of the software for each of those computers."

World of Warcraft v2.0.1 Patch/Notes (performance improvements, fixes, MT OpenGL...)
The WoW 2.0.1 patch notes page has a huge list of changes/fixes - here's a copy of the Mac specific ones:

      Mac
    • Added support for Multi-Threaded OpenGL on Intel Macs running OS X 10.4.8 or higher. Depending on hardware, scene and graphical settings, this can raise frame rates up to a factor of 2X.
    • Improved video hardware detection and default settings, especially with Intel video.
    • Vertex Animation Shaders have been disabled for systems with Intel video.
    • Improved iTunes key-binding feature for smoothness and track name display.
    • Fixed a bug where Tutorial Tips would not be marked as viewed correctly on PowerPC Macs.
    • Fixed a rare crash bug in the audio code.
    • Improved support for Weather Shaders.
    • Added support for changing the mouse sensitivity in WoW.
Previously, the Mac version ignored the value from the slider in the Interface Options dialog.

I've added a MacBook Core Duo 2GHz (2GB Ram) user's comments (raves) on performance gain with the v2.0.1 update to the Mac WoW performance page.
