| Anyone fix a coolant leak in their Liquid Cooled G5? |
A reader with a dual 2.5GHz G5 tower wrote after noticing it was running hot, he spotted a leak in the cooling system and asked if anyone had done their own repairs on this as apparently it's out of warranty. (No photo sent but he said the leak was between the pump and the base plate it rests on - not sure if it's a seal leaking or a crack in the pump housing or tubing.)
If any reader has done a repair like this/is willing to assist him (via email - he's in Brazil), let me know. Thanks. (My 2003 G5 is air cooled.)
A reader replied:
"Just wanted you to know that I personally went trough the process of fixing the issue with a coolant leak. First let me say that this is NOT a DIY (Do It Yourself) repair. Unless this owner of the G5 Power Mac is a Authorized Apple Service Provider, he will not be able to get his hands on the needed processor / heatsink replacement. The coolant is hazardous! Depending on how severe the leak, this is what would have to be replaced:
- Heatsink / Processor (thermal calibration WILL need to be done)
- Pad (located on the power supply cover (kind of like a "Depends Diaper" in case of LEAKS")
- Worst case scenario, the whole enclosure (maybe PSM) would have to be replaced due to the corrosion from the coolant leak on aluminum, at that point, sell the unit! It's NOT worth the major hassle to gut out the case and replace.
Sorry for the Doom and Gloom answer.

He did later say there was some corrosion on some surfaces, but not bad. He thought he could get the proper fluid, but wasn't sure on how to refill it (and if it needed evacuation of air in the system). I don't have a copy of that model's Apple Service Source manual to know if that covers leak repair or just parts replacement. He was told (by an apple dealer I assume) that it would need cooling system and processor replacement, although the system still ran. If he couldn't find the Apple service manual, I thought some PC liquid cooling kit manuals may provide some idea of the pump/refill procedure used on those.

| Fusion Beta (competitor to Parallels Desktop) |
| Readers today sent notes about VMware Fusion Beta program:
"VMware Virtualization for Mac Beta Program
What is VMware's virtualization product for Mac?
The new VMware desktop product for the Mac, codenamed Fusion, allows Intel-based Macs to run x86 operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris, in virtual machines at the same time as Mac OS X. It is built on VMware's rock-solid and advanced desktop virtualization platform that is used by over four million users today.
With Fusion, you can run traditional PC applications on your Mac: if you need to run PC applications, you can now do so by leveraging the power of virtual machine technology...

| DAT Optic eBOX-U Review |
"
AMUG has posted a review of DAT Optic's 8-bay USB 2.0 eBOX-U
enclosure. The review discusses connections, HD installation,
USB hardware volume modes, energy usage, cooling, acoustics and
performance. This 8-bay enclosure is designed for IDE hard
drives but it provides enough clearance to use a SATA to IDE
bridge to also support SATA hard drives via its USB 2.0
interface. The HD connections are all right behind the front
door. With the proper SATA external cables AMUG was able to
load 8 SATA hard drives into this enclosure and use them
directly with two 4-port SATA host adapters. The cooling
capability of this enclosure is awesome and DAT Optic will be
releasing an 8 bay FW800 model, an eSATA model and a multilane
version at the end of Jan. 2007. The $265 MSRP of the eBOX-U
provides a nice value for an 8-bay enclosure.
Happy Holidays,
Michael Bean
