More on ixTV/Pagemaker Conflicts: More reader mail on today's earlier posts: " Hi,
Carmine's (MiM) News Feed
Bob Ficarra wrote to say the $29 Monster 3D cards (after rebate) special at CompUSA ends on Dec 5th, 1998 and quantities are limited. More on Maxtor 10GB Drive Model Mixup: Several weeks ago I reported a reader's comments on the fact some Maxtor 10GB DiamondMax drive kits actually contained the faster DiamondMax Plus (7200RPM) 10GB drive instead of the lower cost/performance 5400 RPM drive. Well I can say they are still out there. Yesterday I went to the local Staples and bought one of their specials (shown in their Sunday sales flier) - a 10GB Maxtor IDE drive with free Iomega IDE ZIP (internal) drive for $259.95 ($229.95 after a $30 mail-in rebate from Maxtor). Using the tip that the 7200RPM drives were reported to be in boxes with serial numbers starting with "Y80", I picked a box with a "Y803xxxx" serial number - and it did have the 91000D8 (7200RPM) drive model. Considering the ZIP drive sells for $99 this is quite a deal. I want to add it to the rev 2 Apple G3 here but due to cable routing and length limits, I may have to move the CDrom and ZIP down to the lower bays in the G3 case for a standard IDE 2-drive cable to reach both drives. I may do an article showing how to add the Maxtor to the G3. I hear both Drive setup 1.5 and 1.6 support the drive and performance is much better than the stock Apple IDE drives.
More on PageMaker Conflicts: Tim Frantz writes in response to today's earlier post that the Quicktime PowerPlug extension is another PageMaker conflict item. [He later wrote that he had a TurboTV installed as well]
" Mike, 56K Modem vs Cable Modem Performance: Robert Tynda sent a report on 56K vs Cable Modem. His results left me green with envy...
Alex Koyshman sent Issue 13 of our Cats-n-Dogs column titled Why OS X will run on your Mac
TurboTV/Pagemaker Conflicts?: This just in from a reader:
" Just installed an ixTV card [might not have bought it if I had known they were going under...] But on my 8.1 Powercenter Pro 180 with a Powerlogix 300/300, the ixTV vdig extension conflicts with Pagemaker 6.5 in that when you open an existing document, or try to make a new document, the page opens but the vertical size is zero. The entire height of the document is compressed into a scan line or two, and no amount of twiddling that I could find, would fix it. Removing the extension solved the problem immediately. The horizontal size is correct, and the rulers show up (horizontally). No vertical rulers. Just thought you might like to know... " [Update: see above for a reader report that QT Powerplug has a conflict with PageMaker as well] New arrivals for review are an XLR8 G3/400MHz ZIF card upgrade for the Apple G3 and TechTool Pro 2 from Micromat. Techtool Pro 2 is what I consider a must-have product that is literally the swiss army knife of Mac utilities, offering hardware tests (CPU, cache, serial ports, extensive memory test, and much more) and disk repair and optimization. After a sour experience with Norton Utilities 4.0 I applaud Micromat's 20+ beta version test prior to the latest release. And to top it off I was shocked it came with a very detailed, thick *printed manual* (a rare thing these days). TechTool Pro helped a reader find the cause of his G3 card upgrade stability problems recently, a bad RAM chip (most people would have blamed the CPU Card and wasted many hours finding the real cause). Highly recommended...
More on MacMagic/Carmageddon : Frank Bernier writes in response to the post in yesterday's news:
" Hi Mike, If you missed last night's late update to Yesterday's News - one reader reported that CompUSA had Diamond Monster 3D (3dfx voodo1 4MB) cards for $59, with a $30 rebate (Update: readers report qtys are limited and the sale ends Dec 5th). See the FAQ for more info on using PC 3dfx cards in a Mac. Today's Unreal news page has another massive update, including 3 new Map of the Week nominees.
