What's new (and fixed) in OS 8.5.1? Find out in a reader submitted post of the Readme file included with the update. (Note - See the MacOS Section of the Misc articles page for more info/articles on various MacOS versions from OS 8.x to 9.x to OS X.)

Ult. Rez Cards - 100Hz Refresh Issue: At least one reader writes that his $79.95 Ult. Rez does have the full retail version's 100Hz refresh rates (unlike the reader note below)

" Hi Mike,
Sorry to drag the conversation out, BUT my card (that I purchased for $79 from MacWarehouse) has 1024x768 at 100mhz available as an option. Don't know what your other reader's problem may be, but all is well with this card which looks like the full retail version to my eyes!
Best,
-Eric "

Support Mail - Please Verify your Email address: I've getting more than a few bounces on mail I send to help readers with tech support problems. Please ensure you verify your correct email address (repeat it in the mail as a safety measure). It's frustrating to write several pages of advice and troubleshooting tips or instructions and then have it bounce back. Please check the FAQ, and Troubleshooting page for possible solutions first before writing - and please try the Men in Mac Help page as an alternative on requests for tech support to help me be able to spend more time on reviews. Thanks.

Ult. Rez Sale Cards - OEM refresh rates?: One reader tells me the Ult. Rez cards from the recent fire sales are indeed OEM ROM cards, as they have a max of 85 HZ vertical refresh at 1024x768 for instance, where the retail version has a 100Hz setting. (select "all" from the resolutions list not just 'recommended' to see all available refresh rates and resolutions). I was sure I'd read the first OEM Ult Rez cards used in the G3s did not allow using the retail card drivers, but appearently these cards do.

MacMagic Tweaker/Carmageddon Tip: Although we reported the texture memory tip in the MacMagic tweaker that can help fix problems in games that don't expect more than a 2MB of texture ram, the manual has an important note on *saving settings* from the tweaker into the game folder for it to work says 'Mayhem':

" [From recent site post] The macmagic tweaker setting doesnĄt help, that was the first thing I tried. With the "Carmageddon Fix" application I could have the tweaker setting on 4/4 MB and still run the game. (Tweaked to 58 MHz in a PM 8600) And without any crashes.

This guy probably didn't do it right, I suspect he hasn't read the manual! The manual clearly states that you have to save the settings into a Tweak-file in the same folder as the game's application, it won't work by just changing the settings in the Tweaker. To run Unreal in 60 MHz I had to save a Tweak-file into Unreal's folder. It is stupid, but that's the way it works. Hey you, try again and post your results!
Magnus "Mayhem" Helin "

Also I hear from Villagetronic's Marc Schmitt that there are new MacMagic drivers to be posted soon at VT's web site (next week possibly).

The Unreal Tips and Tricks page has another massive update today. Check it out.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
