Ult. Rez Cards - More on 100Hz Refresh: It appears the connected monitor can affect the available refresh rates shown (even when "all" are selected). I suspect this is true when using the Apple monitor connector (which include monitor sense lines ).

" Hi Mike!
I bought my Ultimater Rez from Mac Warehouse for $79 and it does have all the video options. However, when hooked up to my Apple 17" multiple scan it only shows the ones that the display supports, even under Show All. When I hooked it up to my 17" Panasonic monitor though it'd go up to 100 Hz.
Anyway, the whole package, software, manuals and all shows that this is indeed a retail version.
Cheers,
Adam Dlzuniewski "

RAVE vs 3DFX Image Quality: [From Today's Unreal News page ] Ken Cobb of Westlake Interactive comments on RAVE vs 3Dfx Image Quality:

"As far as visual quality goes, the two cards are much more similar than different, with 3Dfx giving slightly better results. The main thing I don't like about the ATI chips is the "swimmy" dithering. If you're in the flyby in Unreal, hit escape right when the camera is very close to the castle (to stop the motion). If you look carefully at the textures, it looks like the pixels kind of swim about, even though the exact same scene is being rendered every frame. This is evidently an artifact of their dithering method (going from 24-bit internal color to dithered 16-bit screen color). This was also quite noticeable in Tomb Raider, especially on Lara's face. The Voodoo chips do not have this problem.

I'm working on a page now that shows screenshots of all the different video cards (3dfx banshee, voodoo2, ragepro, etc.) in Unreal so you can see the differences for yourself. It will be posted tonight or tomorrow.

New Unreal Beta Released: Today's Unreal News page has notes and links to the new Unreal Beta version just posted.

MacMagic Tweaker/Carmageddon Settings: More detailed instructions on setting the MacMagic tweaker to run with the 3dfx version of Carmageddon:

" First, fire up MacMagic Tweaker. Once u got it going, simply move the memory knob (lower left) to its down position: it should now say 4/2. Then go the File menu, and select Save or Save as. Then, in the Open & Save dialog box, navigate to the root of your Carmageddon folder. There, save the tweakfile with its default name. Once that's done, go back to the MacMagicTweaker and reset its values to normal, close it.
Now, fire up Carmageddon and everyting should run along fine, with better frame rates than with the patch, 'cause you get the use of the full 4 megs of frame memory, instead of having the game think it's a 2/2 card.
Don't forget you need a full install of Carmageddon to play 3Dfx, and your Carma CD in your CDROM player. cya all later, and don't stand on the side of the road...
Barf Max, a very BAD driver "

Please verify your Email address when sending support mail: I'm still getting a few bounces on mail I send to help readers with tech support problems. Please ensure you verify your correct email address (repeat it in the mail as a safety measure). Also, please check the FAQ, and Troubleshooting page for possible solutions first before writing - and please try the Men in Mac Help page as an alternative on requests for tech support to help me be able to spend more time on reviews. Thanks.

For other recent site news/features links, see the Recent Site Features page.

Note: Before sending tech support related questions please check the Freq. Asked Questions, Site Contents, CPU Card reviews/articles, SCSI reviews articles, Graphics card reviews, Tips/Misc, Message Boards and Help pages - in many cases the answers to your questions are there and they have far more detail than I can list in an email. For Apple G3 system info - see the G3-ZONE. News and guest reviews that don't require a reply are always welcome. I hope to catch up in the next few weeks. Thanks.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
