My ISP just moved this site's IP to a T3 outbound line - access seems faster now
(at the moment at least) - hopefully this will solve the problems of slow access
seen over the last month. If you're still seeing problems consistently let me know.
(A copy of the traceroute for www.xlr8yourmac.com using WhatRoute would be helpful
for anyone having access problems.)
Newerstore.com is now open for business. The iMaxPowr 466MHz G3 upgrade along with Newer's other products are listed there.

If you're really tight for funds this might be worth considering (it's close to the iBook in price but a lot more notebook). However the new PB G3/400's with DVD (software decoding) and firewire (but no SCSI port) are only about $500 more.

Maxtor's FAST 40 Test Results: I've posted a review of the Maxtor 40GB DiamondMax Plus drive, tested in a B&W G3/400 rev 2. This is the fastest hard drive I've tested to date, delivering close to 30MB/sec sustained read and write rates in a B&W G3/400.
Reminder on Beige G3 IDE Drive Upgrades: Several readers wrote today with questions indicating they missed my Beige IDE drive replacement article which shows you how to easily replace the stock Beige G3 drive.) The new Maxtor 40GB should be fine in that system. Due to issues of slave support and cable reach (only 6 inches between the master/slave connectors) it's simpler to just replace the slow/small stock drive. Articles like these are linked in the G3-ZONE sidebar, Storage page and FAQ's How-To section.
$100 (after rebate) Epson 740: I've not seen this price locally, but I bought a new Epson 740 USB printer for $149.99 at the Richmond's Broad Street Office Depot. There's a $50 rebate good until March which makes the net cost about $100. I bought the last one they had in stock at the time and again I'm not sure that all Office Depot stores have this price. Costco's price was about $30 higher on the 740.
iMac 333's at Costco: Costco in Richmond, VA had iMac (Blueberry) 333Mhz models for about $690. Sam's Club had sold out here some weeks back.
Reminder on Current Hard drive Sales: For those that missed the weekend news here's a summary of the latest IDE drive sales:
- CompUSA's Sunday Ad listed Maxtor 40GB DiamondMax Plus drives for $249.99
- Staples and Best Buy have the drive for $299.99 but may price match if your
local CompUSA is out of stock.
- Staples has the 20GB DiamondMax Plus 20GB drive for $129.94 ($30 off) until 2/26/2000.
New Voodoo Cards to Demo Again at CeBit Show: Simon Lisney sent a note that Macworld UK has an article mentioning the new 3dfx VSA100 cards will be shown at the CeBit show Feb. 24th-Mar. 1st, 2000 in Hanover Germany.
The Voodoo5 demo from the Macworld Toyko show is shown in my previous photo gallery.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help. You might save someone from a lifetime of Windows in the bargain.
Thanks to my wife Kay, the ultimate computer widow for putting up with all the time I spend with the site work, tests and email.= Top of Page =
