Wanted: PowerBook G4 ColorSync Profiles to Remove Blue Cast:
Sorry the news is late today. I left early this morning to drive to northern Virginia to look at a PowerBook G4 and didn't get back until after 2PM. As I knew I would be, I was very impressed after actually handling a new PowerBook G4. I'm biased I know, but I think the PB G4 design is beautiful. Anyone with an open mind (even those that do not care for Macs) would agree I think that this is one classy notebook, and definitely stands out from the crowd. (As did previous powerbooks in my opinion.)

However my first impression was that the screen had a very noticable blue tint. I remember this being commented on with new PB Firewire models last year that had the LG made TFT screen. (The Samsung screens didn't seem to have the blue cast.).

Perhaps the store lighting or the fact it was running on battery (lower brightness I suspect) may have made it seem more blue that it really is but I welcome other PB G4 owner comments on the screen. This sample had no bad pixels that I could see, although I did not run a pixel tester on it.

I hear the profiles I posted for the Pismo will not work with the new PowerBook G4. (Update - Two readers tonight wrote to say that the Pismo profile linked in the PB G3/500 review did work on their PB G4.) If anyone has made a profile that helps remove the blue tint, please let me know.

(I was already hoplessly behind in email and other work, now even more so. If you've written and not gotten a response realize that even working 16-20 hour days, I can't reply to all mail, but I try.)

If you missed it, I published a review and install guide for the BlueChip G3/500 last month. I also have an PB Wallstreet Hard Drive Installation Guide that used the 20GB Travelstar drive. (Includes performance tests.)

Reader Samples of USB Microphone Audio Quality/Frequency Range:
" Hi Mike,
I noticed the discussion about the UA-30 and the iMic. Have tested a sample of the iMic. The noise and distortion aren't too bad (the latter is somewhat higher than the built-in audio on my Pismo laptop) but there is another problem, if using it for music reproduction, or especially so as an audio test and measurement front-end:

Namely, it rolls off the frequency response below 100 Hz (-6 dB at 20 Hz; for comparison, the Pismo was -1 dB at 8 Hz). This would disqualify it from high-fidelity sound reproduction or audio testing (the frequency response isn't flat over the audio frequency range) and isn't "better than CD quality," as Griffin implies on their website (CD low frequency response only is limited by the source material).

However, even given these issues, it does seem a good value at $35, but I would look for a higher-end solution for serious audio work.

Here is a URL pointing to the measurement results:

More Comments on Teac Based Que 12/10/32 Drives:
Yesterday's news had a tip for those with hangs during finishing CDs in Toast with a Que 12/10/32 drive that has a Teac mechanism. Another reader wrote with comments (I can't verify the accuracy of this report of course):

" Mike,
I have contacts with Que people because we started selling those new 12/10/32 firewire. We had no problem with Plextor, but some Teac units (s/n starting with 0 (zero)) have an old firmware, you must upgrade to version 2.0b. The problem is that you canĂt update the firmware on a Mac because is only for windows. If you have a PC you can get the recorder out of the firewire case, connect as IDE device on the PC, update the firmware and then put it again in the case. I havenĂt tried yet but I will soon. IĂll try also to connect to a mac with IDE and use VirtualPC to run the updater.
Regards.
Max. "

I told Max that based on past reports - VPC will not work for flashing the firmware in an IDE CDRW drive. For those that don't have access to a PC, try the tip noted in yesterday's news.

Reader Report on QT 5 Expiration/Problems Reinstalling QT 4.x (w/Fix)
[Note Apple has QT 5 Beta Preview 3 now available for download.] There have been recent reports of QT 5 preview 2 timing out recently. This reader noted a problem trying to reinstall 4.1.

" After the beta expired last night I decided to do a full install of the Quicktime 4 using the installer on the apple site.

The new Soundmanager causes a freeze on start up, I had to boot with extensions disabled and replace the sound control panel and sound manager extension with an older version from quicktime 4.1 to solve the problem.

I've uploaded the files to my site so anyone else having the same problem can sort it out:

www5.ewebcity.com/calculatedrisc/SoundManagerFix.img.hqx

I asked if he had disabled all QT related extensions and control panels before running the 4.1 installer. (Update - Today's TIL Updates listing includes one on QuickTime: How to Remove QuickTime 5 Public Preview.)
