PowerBook G4 DVD Drive Grommet Tip for CD Eject Problems:
| Although I have not seen any DVD/CD eject problems, another reader wrote he has and noted how he solved it:
"
Hi Mike,
I just received my PB Ti 400 on Feb 27th. I also have the DVD eject
problem. The fix is to open the bottom cover, then locate the 2 rubber
grommets on the left hand side of the drive (looking down, with the PB sitting upside down, drive toward you). Pry the drive up slightly to access the grommets, then spin them 180 degrees such that the fat side of each one nests in the plastic well on the inside of the case. Replace the cover and
that should be it.
I read about this before, and sure enough it works.
It's a 15 minute procedure. I still have a problem with the dust cover for the DVD, which makes for a tight squeeze through the opening. Most of the time I have to "help" the CD into the mechanism.
Mark"
I'm adding his notes to the PowerBook G4 Owner Comments page.

iDVD Comments (verification on 1 Hour Limit to DVD recording)
Although it is noted in Apple's iDVD Fact Sheet, several readers asked for verfication that iDVD was limited to 1 hour of recording. I asked a new G4/733 owner if he could verify this using the bundled iDVD. He replied that it was true and included a screenshot from iDVD. (Note - Several readers later wrote the limit is due to the fixed rate encoding of iDVD.)
"
Mike as you can see in the attached picture, iDVD is limited to 1 hour. It would not let me create anything over that. I am still waiting for DVD
Studio Pro to arrive. From what I understand DVD Studio Pro includes a Quicktime MPEG 2 extension that will let you export from Quicktime or Final Cut Pro. DVD Studio Pro supposedly will only deal with MPEG 2 format.
I
don't want to waste a DVD-R disc on just one hour of video quite yet. I do have some family video stuff I can convert over from VHS that should make about an hour. I won't be able to do that till later tonight.
Aloha, Rick"

Comments and Suggestions (VM, Cache) on G4 667/733 System Performance:
"
Hi Mike,
I read your readers report on the 733mhz G4 machine. While we haven't
received our 733 yet we have gotten one of the 667 machines and have gotten
similarly off results, so much so that they do not make sense.
I asked an Apple Engineer friend here in Sunnyvale and he says more than
likely it is OS9.1 that is the culprit. It is not optimized for the new
chips which have both level 2 and level 3 cache and that in many cases the
prefetches that the OS does I.E. {disk cache) can cause lots of cache misses
and so forth.
Rumor has it that Apple will release an update to patch this about the time
that OSX is released. In the mean time he said you actually might get better
results with Virtual Memory turned on and the disk cache set to the lowest
setting.
Also he says that you should Zap PRAM before adding or removing the Geforce
card or you will get odd behavior.

Disc Burner 1.01 - Firewire Yamaha 16/10/40 and SCSI 4416 Owner Comments:
A reader sent a comment on the new version compatibility with a 16/10/40 drive:
"
Mike,
Just a quick heads up. Disc Burner 1.0.1 is available both on the Apple
site and via Software Update. External ADS Pyro firewire/Yamaha 16x CDRW is
BOOTABLE, lots of other drives listed as supported as well. Works well with
iTunes update..
Also just made a drive database entry. Keep up the great site!!!
Thanks--Loren"
An owner of a SCSI Yamaha 4416S drive reported a lack of support. (Several other 4416S owners also wrote in reply to this post noting the same thing.)
"
Hi Mike
I have been successfully using Itunes 1.1 with my Sawtooth G4 (400) and my scsi Yamaha 4x4x16. I also have been able to use toast 4.1.2 succesfully.
When I saw a Disc Burner update that would allow me to also burn CD's I immediately installed it. Unfortunately Disc Burner 1.01 does not seem to work at all. Itunes 1.1 still works and Toast 4.1.2 still works, but a blank disk is not recognized by Disc Burner and when I directly try to run the disk burner application I just get the message "Please insert blank media" even when a CD is already inserted.
Has anyone else mentioned this?
Barry Rubin
"
If any 4416S owners have a tip for Barry let me know. If you enter a Drive Compatibility Database entry, it's good to note if you've tested iTunes/Disc Burner with the drive and if it's bootable.
