I've now posted a page with More DVIator reports on this issue. Also included are comments from those using only an ADC extension cable saying they've also seen noise in the display.

Sonnet Comments on Firmware Fix (Beta avail. now) for ATA/100 Card in Quicksilvers
In reply to recent reports here on Sonnet ATA/100 cards having boot and other issues in Quicksilver G4s, I've received this email from Sonnet:

    " Hi Mike -
I wanted to let you know that we are aware of the issue with the Tempo ATA100 and the new 2002 QS machines. We are currently testing an updated firmware version that addresses the issue. The new firmware was released to Beta sites late last week and testing is going very well. The Sonnet customer support team (support@sonnettech.com) can send out the Beta firmware to anyone requesting it. We will post the new firmware to our site as soon as we complete testing.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
    Regards,
    Debbie Michelle
    Product Marketing Manager
    Sonnet Technologies, Inc. "

I'll add Debbie's comments to the previous reports page here on the issue.

Sonnet Firmware Update for Wallstreet CPU Upgrade Cards
Last month there were a few owner reports in the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database about a firmware update to the Cresendo WS G3/500 CPU upgrade for Wallstreet PB's that some said helped problems they had with >192MB of RAM installed. Here's an email from Sonnet today with links to the update and other product announcements.

"1. Sonnet Firmware Update Crescendo/WS Firmware Updater (for Wall Street Powerbooks)
    Posted: February 8, 2002
    Crescendo/WS Updater
    Version: 1.1
    Description:
This Sonnet firmware update adjusts specific logic memory timing parameters on the Crescendo/WS processor upgrade card. This fixes operational instability of the Crescendo/WS resulting from installation of certain combinations of DIMM (RAM) modules. This software does not alter the Apple firmware on PowerBook G3 Series machines. This firmware also update boosts the maximum supported memory on the Crescendo/WS from 192MB to 512MB, far exceeding Apple Computeręs stated maximum capacity for these systems.

    2. Sonnet Now Shipping:
Sonnet Tempo RAID 133 for G3 and G4 Macs.
    Description:
The Tempo RAID133 is the latest addition to Sonnet's family of Tempo ATA drive controller products, and provides performance gains of up to three times that of the computer's original storage solution. Now these Mac owners can enhance their storage and computing capabilities with RAID striping (Level 0) technology incorporated entirely in hardware. By striping from hardware, the Tempo RAID133 allows booting from the RAID volume, unlike software RAID products which may require a separate boot drive. Tempo RAID133 owners will experience top transfer rates using low cost, larger capacity IDE drives. Compared to more costly SCSI solutions, ATA hardware RAID provides an economical high-performance alternative."

Like the SIIG cards, the ATA/133 RAID card I suspect is Acard based, which means it should work fine in Quicksilver G4s based on owner reports in the past.

Reader Reports on Copy Protected Audio CDs, CD Title Listings and More
I've posted a page with comments, links and reports on Copy Protected Audio CDs. This isn't a new issue (the other net news links in the last year has linked to many articles on the web about this), however I've been meaning to summarize comments, links on the web to CD listings, etc.. Two recent emails from readers are included in the article as well as my email to UMG last month and their reply. The related articles listing at the bottom of the page links to web sites with more info, listings of CDs and a report from TechTV that they used a NEC DVD ROM drive to rip MP3s from protected CDs.

Carmack Comments on GeForce4MX Naming/Lack of Advanced Features
As noted here before, the GeForce4MX really doesn't have the advanced features of the GeForce4 Ti line or the GeForce3. John Carmack of ID has recently criticized the naming of the GeForce4MX card reportedly saying "Don't Buy the GeForce4MX for Doom" [Doom III next generation engine based game he's working on] due to the GeForce4MX's lack of support for four textures and vertex shaders. Gamespot has a related article which links to Carmack's latest plan file.
