Photos and Article on 2 CD Size Drives inside G4 Tower
A reader sent a link to a page with his photos on bracket and bezel mods to install a slotted DVD drive under the existing CDRW drive in a G4 digital audio system. He cut a slot in the blank bezel, so that it actually has a useable bezel in the front, unlike past mods where 2nd CD size drives were added to B&W G3 and later systems, but had no bezels installed.

Sosumi vs Aqua OS X Performance on B&W G3/350
I asked one of the readers that commented on the Sosumi OS X theme in Friday's news to run the 'let1kwindowsbloom' benchmark test (available here) on his system with Aqua vs Sosumi. (It opens/closes 1000 windows and reports the time it took. I used it in a recent GeForce4MX vs Radeon 7500 comparison in a dual 1GHz G4.)
Here's his times for the 1000 window open/close test running Aqua vs Sosumi on a B&W G3/350 with 640MB RAM using the the original ATI Rage 128 graphics card and Mac OS X 10.1.2 (Build #5P48).

" i ran the tests you wanted me to run. with the Sosumi theme the test came out to 115 seconds and with the apple's aqua theme it came out to 129 seconds. i guess aqua is only a little bit slower.
    Jim "

Actually that's not an insignificant difference in my opinion and a bigger delta than I expected. The tip from an Apple TIL last year for slower macs (using thousands colors vs millions) makes the most noticeable improvement in my experience.

G4/800 iMac vs. G4/500 Cube Game Performance Tests
" I compared the Framerates between the following systems:
    500 MHZ G4 Cube w/Radeon and 448MB of Ram.
800 MHZ G4 iMac w/GeForce2MX and 256 MB of RAM.

All test were in OS X 10.1.2.
Since I copied my user directory over to the iMac from the Cube, everything was identical. Resolution was 1024x768 with high details and textures.

    Quake III Arena
Built in demo. Average of 4 runs.

    TIME FPS
    CUBE: 29.2sec 42.9 FPS iMAC: 27.1sec 46.6 FPS

    UT OS X Preview 2 Wicked400
    TIME MIN MAX AVG
    (SEC) FPS FPS FPS
    CUBE 110.6 12.7 34.6 21.8
    iMAC 109.7 12.6 32.9 22.0
[This is more of a CPU test than video card. Practically a draw-Mike.]

    X-Plane 6.10 Beta-6
I deleted the preferences so it would use the X-Plane defaults. I launched X-plane and only turned on the FPS Display. I did touch the default plane sitting on the default runway. After a couple minutes of observation:
    CUBE - 16-17 FPS
    iMac - 19-20 FPS "

Problem Report on Internal Firewire/USB Hub:
Last week's news pages had a link to a reader's article/photos on installing an internal 4 port Firewire/USB Hub in his G4 Tower. This reader report wasn't so positive.

" Regarding the internal Kouwell Combo Hub (4 1394, 4 USB ports) item from earlier this week: BIG STINKER. I'm returning it Monday.

    1) Most of my FireWire cables don't actually fit far enough into the ports (USB is OK though). I could go buy different cables of the sort that I know will fit, or sanding down the face of the unit about 1/8 inch might work. However, there's also:

    2) The computer (G4 500 MP running OSX) will not sleep with the hub attached. It will go through all the motions, spinning down the drives and sleeping the monitor...and then it all comes up again about a second later.

    3) The hub emits a high-pitched whine suggestive of power supply circuitry on its last legs.

Neat idea. Execution is seriously flawed.

More Quicksilver Owner Comments on Sonnet ATA/100 Beta Firmware Update
Last week's news had two Quicksilver owner comments on the beta firmware update for Sonnet's ATA/100 card noted in last Tuesday's news page. (To address the issues noted here previously from Quicksilver G4 owners using the card.) Here's the 3rd reader report I've had from a Quicksilver owner on the beta firmware update, noting it solved the boot issues and supports deep sleep in OS 9 but not OS X:

    " Hi mike,
Sonnet sent me the ATA 100 firmware updater for their controller card. I have a 1 gig MHz dual QS2002 G4. It's an OS 9 app so I booted in OS922 first. The initial try at the firmware update failed with an error. Second try was ok. I rebooted and Profiler recognized the card as expected. Called it SCSI as expected. I launched the firmware updater to check what version it would call out, it was 2.2.2 as expected. It supports deep sleep, the fans turn off and the power light pulsates.
My hard drives are now bootable in any startup direction to/from any OS version( OS922 or OSX1.2) In OS X 1.2 deep sleep seems not to be fully supported. Fans stay on and light does not pulsate.
Other than the sleep issue most likely Apple problem I'm satisfied and thanks for assisting with the ATA sonnet 100 concern.

Beige G3 w/LaserWriter OS X Printing Tip
    " Hello Mike,
First, love the site, tons of useful information.
I've got something that may be useful to other readers:

When I installed OSX on my Beige G3 MT, the system would NOT recognise the Laserwriter 12/640 connected to my printer port. In short, I could not print from OSX.

I could find nothing in the release notes or on the Apple support pages about this.

I solved this by buying an apple ethernet adapter for the printer (Laserwriters have a non-standard connection) and a crossover cable. When the Laserwriter was then connected to directly to my built-in-ethernet port the problem was solved. I turned on Appletalk for my built-in-ethernet and the Laserwriter was immediately recognised.

I can't be the only person to have encountered this problem, and I couldn't find this info online. Hope this helps someone...
    Cheers,
    Rob Davis ('tragicallywhiteguy') "
