| 2nd Report from B&W G3 Owner that 10.1.3 Breaks DVD Player Support |
[Update: I've gotten a ton of emails on the 10.1.3 update and DVD player issues - some B&W G3 owners OK, others not. But I've had a few problem reports on the DVD player in 10.1.3 from other mac models - Pismo (Powerbook G3 firewire), even some G4/AGP Macs. See this page for all reports by Mac model.]
I had hoped the first report (below) wasn't common, but here's the 2nd B&W G3 owner that has said OS X 10.1.3 breaks the DVD player support he had in 10.1.2:
"
Hi Mike,
I just want to let you know that I also experienced a broken DVD app on
my B&W G3 after upgrading to 10.1.3 and downloading and reinstalling
the DVD update(3.0.1) from Apple's site as you suggested did NOT fix it.
I also tried the hack from an older post (booting in OS 9 and removing
the installation check file) without success.
I just upgraded the B&W with an XLR8 G4 ZIF and a Radeon PCI video card,
so I hope that isn't part of the problem.
I'm crossing my fingers wishing one of your readers will come up with a
solution.
Thank you.
Tommy
"
From these reports I suspect Beige G3 owners (running PCI Rage128 or Radeon cards) would also be affected. If anyone finds a work-around, let me know.
(Update)
A B&W G3 owner with Radeon 7000 also noted 10.1.3 broke the DVD player support he had. Two other B&W G3 owners running Rage128 (OEM/original cards I assume) said the update did not affect the DVD player. One noted a G4 CPU upgrade also, so that is not a factor. If anyone with DVD player problems after the update still as the OEM Rage128 card - try that to see if it helps. (It shouldn't matter, unless the CardID/type is being checked now - which I know sounds paranoid...)
I just got a reply from the first reader to report the B&W G3/DVD player issue - he said he's running the OEM Rage128 card. And one G4/450 owner with OEM Rage128 Pro said the update also broke his DVD player. (Strange...) I've only updated the PB G4 and Cube so far - the DVD player still runs after the update on those machines.

| OS X 10.1.3 Released - Listing of Changes/Improvements |
|
I hadn't checked Software Updates today until after a reader sent a note that 10.1.3 broke the DVD player app on his B&W G3. Apple's OS X page notes
"10.1.3 delivers better application reliability, important security features and additional hardware support
- Expanded support for QPS, EZQuest, LaCie, Yamaha, Sony and MCE
Technologies CD burners
- Improved iPhoto and Image Capture support for several digital
camera models from Canon, Kodak and Sony
- PowerBook G4 supports DVD Playback on external VGA displays
- PowerBook video mirroring is on by default when connecting
to a new display
- iTunes includes improvements to the full screen visualizer
- LDAP and active directory services support login authentication
- OpenSSH version 3.0.2p1
- WebDAV supports digest authentication
- Mail supports SSL encryption"
Here's the reader's email on 10.1.3 breaking his DVD player (v3.01 I assume):
"
Mike,
Just installed the 10.1.3 update to my b/w G3 and it broke my DVD ap.
Uggg.
Thought I'd let you know in case I'm not the only one.
- Justin B
"
I suggested he try reinstalling the v3.01 OS X DVD player. (Linked in this past OS X DVD player/mods article.)

| OS X iTunes Support File for Sony CRX-175E2 24/10/40 CDRW Drive |
Hi Mike. I added an entry late last night to the CDRW database that
lists my new Sony CRX175E2 (24x10x40) IDE drive in a PCI G4 under OS X.
This drive is one refresh newer (it looks like) than the CRX175A1.
iTunes needed a new hack to write to it and here is the modified file.
Works perfectly with Toast for X, Retrospect for X (the current public
beta), iTunes (now), disc burning from the OS X Finder (even before the
iTunes hack), and is bootable! A great upgrade drive for $89 after
rebate (Office Depot).
-- Joseph S."
I've added this info to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section also for future reference. (Note - this file replaces the existing (original) file. You may want to boot into OS 9 to search/replace the file for OS X to avoid any permissions issues or having to use the terminal, etc.. Of course like all mod files, it's provided 'as-is' - sometimes even with mod files drives do not burn 100% reliably due to other system/software issues.)

| Tip for Retail IDE Pioneer SuperDrive Owners |
In the last week I've had two Pioneer DVR-A03 (aka SuperDrive) owners report problems that are apparently due to the drive going into sleep mode. The first was from a G4/AGP owner that noted kernel panics in OS X if a disc was left in the drive for extended periods and then you tried to open the CD's icon. He noted that setting the energy saver disk settings to never allow sleep solved that. (He had a 1.65 firmware drive, if that matters.) Another owner report (added to the drive compat. database today) with the drive in a Beige G3 running OS 9.2 also noted problems accessing a disc in the drive after a period of idle time. (I suggested he try the tip on setting the Energy Saver to never sleep drives to see if that helped.) Some drives have their own sleep routines in firmware that may ignore the energy saver settings.
I'm not sure how common these problems are (there are many reports on the Pioneer retail drive in the database), but I just wanted to post a note here on the main news page for those that do not read the listings of database updates in the daily news or search the drive reports database. (Searching by drive brand/type without selecting a mac model is one tip to make sure you see all reports on the drive, not just those in a specific mac model.) |

| Spider-Man 1.01 Update Fixes Bugs, adds FSAA Support |
|
Aspyr has a 1.01 Update to Spider-Man for the Mac available at http://www.aspyr.com/mini-sites/spider/downloads.php. Here's a copy of the readme listing the fixes/changes:
Spider-Man
Version 1.0.1 Update
18 February 2002
Spider-Man 1.0.1 Update addresses several issues in the game. It is recommended for all users. To use this update, you must have previously installed Spider-Man version 1.0.
New in this version:
* Fixed a crash and rendering glitch with the Scorpion in the Character Viewer Gallery.
* The invisibility feature of the Spidey Unlimited costume was not working.
* Added support for 32-bit color (millions of colors). This improves overall texture dithering for machines that have the horsepower. It is a user option selectable under Options/Display Options.
* Added support for Full Screen Anti-Aliasing on ATI video cards. It is a user option selectable under Options/Display Options. If your machine does not support this feature, the option will be disabled. ATI's RADEON 8500 Mac Edition graphics board supports Full Screen Anti-Aliasing for Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. To enable Full Screen Anti-Aliasing support in older RADEON Mac Edition models, including the original RADEON and RADEON 7000, a driver update from ATI's website may be required. Visit www.ati.com for the latest driver updates.
* The radio tower on top of building at start of the 2nd level was rendered incorrectly.
