Fixing the Wallstreet 'Fan on during Sleep' Bug in MacOS X
** Update ** - To anyone that downloaded the extension earlier today when this was first posted - the author added this note on his page:

" WARNING: If you downloaded the extension before 4pm EST February 28, 2002, the file was likely corrupted. Reload it."
(original news post follows)
I've not run OS X on my PB G3 wallstreet, but Domingo Alvear sent a link to a page that has a fix for the "Fan on during Sleep" bug. Here's a clip from the page by Juan Cabanela that was posted yesterday:

"Ever since MacOS X came out, there has been a very annoying bug for Wallstreet PowerBook users. If you place the Wallstreet to sleep, and then unplug it, the fan in the PowerBook comes on and will not turn off. This rapidly drains the battery, somewhat eliminating the benefit of placing the system to sleep. "

For his full comments and fix for the problem - see http://homepage.mac.com/juancabanela/WallStreetFix.html.

Today Only Special on ATI Radeon 8500 AGP Mac Edition - Under $207 after $50 off Coupon
A reader post in the forums noted at $50 off coupon that ends today (Feb 28,2002) at the GateWay store (yes, that's Gateway as in PC maker).

The Mac Radeon 8500 is available from the Gateway Accessory store for $256.95, minus a $50.00 instant coupon and shipping is FREE for all orders over $199 for a total of $206.95.

I think the instant coupon code expires the end of TODAY, so move quickly. Sorry for the late notice, but I just caught on myself.

    Rebel

The link above goes to a deals site that notes the $50 off coupon code with $199 or more orders. (Quote is "$50 off $199 Instant Rebate in the [Gateway] Accessory store. Use code BA686. Expires Today [Feb 28th, 2002]."). I searched the Gateway Accessories page and found this 8500 product page notes it's the Mac Edition card. Price before coupon is $256.95 when I checked this morning. Free shipping I suspect is only for USA customers but see their page for details. The cards are not in stock currently however, according to that page.
(I'm working on a review of the Radeon 8500 Mac Edition now - having to work for several days on the bbs server has prevented me from having it finished yet, but it should be posted by this weekend. Will include performance tests comparing the 8500 to the GeForce3, GeForce4MX, GeForce2MX, Radeon 7500 and original Radeon AGP.)

Adaptec 2930 Card Owner reports problems with Adaptec OS X Driver Update
Yesterday's news had notes and links to Adaptec's latest OS X drivers for their 2906, 2930, 29160, 29160N and 39160 SCSI cards. A 2930 card owner wrote he had problems with the driver update and had to revert to the previous version:

" I previously reported my success in getting my QUE SCSI burner to work in OS 10.1 and it has worked through the 10.1.3 update no problem (still not supported in iTunes Sigh) Today I installed the Adaptec Power Domain OS X Version 1.1 driver update for my 2930 controller and my burner and my Umax SCSI 1220S scanner were instantly not recognized. Once I restored the Power Domain OS X Version 1.0.2 driver my burner and scanner were back and running.
I tried to report this to Adaptec but didn't really want to crack the case to get the SN# for the A>S>K system (I registered once already) Just thought I'd pass the warning
    yikes "

Adaptec asked that I remove the direct download links to each of the drivers and to post this page link instead.

More Radeon 7000/OS X/Beige G3 Owner Comments
    " Mike,
Did Steve J send any further information regarding his method of getting a Radeon 7000 Mac Edition to work with the Beige G3 series? [No - unless I missed it in all the mails here. His original report was in a past news page and was added to the Radeon 7000 owner comments page last week.-Mike]
I have tried to use his workaround on three different systems (1 G3/266 (Rev A) with 256mb ram and OS 10.1.2; 1 G3/300 (Rev B) with 256mb ram and OS 10.1.2; and my own system: G3/500 (Rev A and B roms)with 768mb ram and OS 10.1.2), and was not able to get video on my monitor.

Two other things that I noticed when working with my 7000 were very strange indeed.
the 1st one was that I could only boot into OS X when my card was in the first slot of my Beige G3's motherboard (A1 according to System Profile). having the card in either of the other slots would cause a lock up during startup or else result in a black screen.

the 2nd one was even more unusual. I had my card in the C1 slot and as usual, the system froze up. I decided to give up for a while and proceeded to shut down my system so I could reboot. However, this time I attached my monitor (Apple MultiScan 17) to the built-in video port before I pushed my power button. I was very surprised to not only get a picture on my monitor, but to also notice that the system finished booting up to the login screen! Sadly I have not been able to duplicate this incident.
    Joel
    he later wrote
here is a hint to your readers. If OS X does not want to boot up with a Radeon 7000 ME installed in a PCI slot while using the built in video port, try attaching the included Apple to VGA adapter or VGA to DV-I adapter.

I attached the mac to vga adapter and now my Beige G3 does not lock up during boot up AND my Belkin 2-port USB card works, allowing my Supra Express 56k USB modem to be acknowledged by the system. "

An old tip for 'headless' (no monitor) servers that I use is to connect a Mac/VGA adapter to the video port (that makes the mac think there is a monitor attached .)

GCC OS X Printer Drivers for Elite 12, XL and 21 Series Printers
(late in posting this)
    "Mike,
As a heads up, GCC Technologies has posted OS X drivers for some of their printers, the Elite 12, XL and 21 Series printers. The list of supported printers is growing.

Also, I was actually successful in connecting and printing from OS X to our 45 ppm Minolta Di450 high speed copier that has been put on our campus network. Not all features of the machine are available as yet (stapling, hole punch, etc.), but I was able to add it as a LaserWriter through the Print Center and print to it. At 45 ppm and PostScript 3 compliant, it opens a whole new world of opportunities.
    John G."

John later sent a driver page link - see http://www.gcctechnologies.com/support/doc/elite12.html#software.
