10.2.4 Update Released - Reminder for Users of Modified Device-Plugin files
OS X 10.2.4 was released today via Software Updates.

" The 10.2.4 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for the following applications, services and technologies: Address Book, Classic compatibility, Finder, FireWire, Graphics, OpenGL, and Sherlock. It includes AFP and Windows file service improvements, as well as audio, disc recording, graphics, and printing improvements.

For detailed information on this Update, please visit
http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n107362 "

NOTE If you're using a modified device-plugin file make a backup copy, since most OS X version updates overwrite the existing files - and unless the update adds support for your drive, you'll have to re-install the edited device-plugin file. (Most readers get them from the CDROM/CDR section of the FAQ here, so you can just download it again and reinstall it if need be.)

Alternative OS X HP Printer Driver
*Update* - See Friday's news page for reader reports on the driver. Also a note there on an HP OS X DeskJet 2.1 driver udpate.

(original news item follows, from a reader email - I have not tried these drivers personally. See the page there for install info and more details.)

" VERY interesting for users of HP printers and OS X.
I now finally got it working! HP has completely failed to deliver a WORKING printer driver but here it is:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
All the best,
Nikolaj KØster

Description
The HPIJS driver is the first free, open-source driver issued by HP for their DeskJet and LaserJet printers. For most supported printers , this driver produces output quality equivalent to the proprietary HP drivers. In photo mode, with photo paper, the output quality is very high, especially for the HP DeskJet 990C and later models, which auto-detect the paper type in hardware. Photo printing is fully supported in the newer 6- and 7-ink models.

A major advantage of using this driver over those supplied by HP is the direct interface between HPIJS and the native CUPS spooler, which allows printing from any printer over any available connection such as USB, AppleTalk, TCP/IP (via LPD and IPP), HP JetDirect, and shared windows printers via SAMBA. Additionally, this driver utilizes the existing Mac OS X USB "backend" and thus does not install any software that might interfere with standard USB operation. "

Reader Report on Sony USB Portable Combo DVD/CDRW Drive
(from one of the drive database reports today)

Drive: USB Sony MPDAP20U (24x10x24x +8x DVD-ROM)
System: PowerBook G3 lombard running OS 9.2
Comments:
"This is a partial review as I got to borrow a friend's new Sony MPDAP20U portable battery powered USB 2.0 combo drive and try it on a Lombard PowerBook in OS 9.2.2. I found it was recognized and could read CD's and DVD's by simply plugging it into the USB port but no Apple Disc Burning, that is until I installed the Sony-supplied B's Recorder software. It installed three extensions which gave the drive full burner support with iTunes, DiscBurner, and of course B's Recorder.

Interestingly, after the driver installation, DVD's loaded correctly on the Desktop and were playable through Apple DVD Player 1.3 (Using the Lombard's Hardware Decoder) though performance was very choppy as it was through the built-in USB 1.1. All this while running the drive and the laptop on batteries.

Of note is this drive is a portable music player capable of music CD playback as well as MP3 CD playback. Though the box doesn't mention it, the manual notes MP3 playback off of a DVD! That could mean playback of 1000 songs off of a cheap DVD-R.

This is an exciting new drive. If it works as well or better on a machine with USB 2.0, and OS X, and try DVD-R MP3 playback, I will pick one up myself. "

USB 1.1 (onboard USB for macs to date) is only 1.5MB/sec max interface (in reality less, usually good for only about 4x max burn rates) but with a USB 2.0 interface, this would be much improved, but all of the USB 2.0 PCCards or PCI cards I have seen only have USB 2.0 drivers for OS X, not OS 9. I wonder if the drive includes any OS X drivers (if not editing the Sony device-plugin in OS X would be one option).

OS X install tips for 6500
Thomas Koons wrote he has a page with tips for installing OS X on a 6500 using Xpostfacto. This was in reply to a news item yesterday noting a TAM owner was running OS X using Xpostfacto (even though both the TAM and 6500 are not listed as supported systems with the current Xpostfacto version 2.2.5.)

" ....I have info on 6500 owners getting OSX to install and run!
http://www.zone6400.com/files/installing_OSX.html
It seems to work OK on a 6500 with onboard video or even aftermarket video cards that are older then today's Radeon 7000. But there are a lot of limitations besides the TV tuner stuff. The COMM II slot seems not to be detected either and you are stuck with 128MB of ram on the 6500 and 136MB on the 6400. And no L2 G3 card will work in OSX but a L2 cache will work fine.
Also you must use a video card for install on the 6400 since the OSX installer fails if you are using the stock video (unaccelerated video) port. The latest version of XPostFacto works but you must tweak its settings to get it working. This info is on my site at that link above. Another issue is that you have to use Apple System restore to move the OSX CD data to a local IDE HD partition as the SCSI CDROM does not seem to be supported by the installer CD? I have had one or two people say they used the CDROM but most say you need to go the route of moving the data to an IDE/SCSI drive and install to an IDE drive.

Anyone Tried the $149 Montage MultiMedia Software package for OS X?
(Note - See Friday's news page for reader comments on Montage. original news item follows)
A reader linked to an OS X MM (video/audio) package priced at $149 called Montage. They have a demo download there but with my workload I haven't had time to try it and wondered if any reader has. Here's a clip from their product page:

" MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TOOL EXCLUSIVELY FOR MAC OS X
Arboretum Systems is pleased to announce its entry to the consumer video/audio market with Montage(tm), the first media software that lets creators work like they think. Montage(tm) features a groundbreaking "trackless" workspace that allows the free manipulation of video, audio, stills, and text in an infinitely expandable window. Montage(tm) is the crystallization of Arboretum's desire to change the way computers are used for video, film, multimedia, and music production at all levels.
The only consumer-priced alternative to Apple's iMovie software, Montage(tm) was built for OS X from the ground up and is 100% Cocoa native. "Montage(tm) was created for aspiring moviemakers who literally think 'outside the box," said Arboretum CEO, Georges Jaroslaw. "If you can see a movie in your mind, you can easily create it in our software by placing and editing clips in the workspace. The user interface is completely transparent."
Media clips can be imported or captured in real time from a FireWire DV camera using remote machine control, then freely arranged in the workspace to make movies. "

If any readers have tried this software, let me know your experience with it and how it compares to the (free) iMovie3 and $299 Final Cut Express. Thanks

(no itunes burn support in OS 9.x)
(FYI - Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT, B&W G3 and 8600/9600 Macs.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
