Postive Feedback on G5 Fan Speed/Energy Saver Settings Tip
Several G5 owners wrote that the earlier tip on setting the Energy Saver performance Option to Highest (from automatic) helped with the high speed fan problem after the update. (I and several others never saw the problem, but I had ES set to highest already.) One reader said just toggling the setting seemed to help (as if refreshing the prefs file helped). I'll add their reports to the 10.3.8 feedback page.
BTW - For those writing on the problem (if they have it or not) please include your Energy Saver performance setting just for the record. Thanks.

MacAlly iShock Driver spewing errors after 10.3.8 update
In reply to 2 reports on the 10.3.8 feedback page of 'disk full' problems, a reader said that he had Macally's iShockX Driver installed and after the update to 10.3.8, it flooded the system log with errors until the drive was literally full. See his thread at for more info. I wrote the 2 previous readers with this problem to ask if they had that driver installed. (One reader later replied he did have the driver installed.)

Report on G5 Fan Speed Issue and Energy Saver Settings w/10.3.8
I mentioned earlier today that I updated a 2003 Dual 2GHz G5 (w/ATI X800 installed and 2 HD's) using the Combo updater last night and have not noticed any increased fan speed. (I didn't even run repair permissions which Matthew C. said an apple support guy highly recommended after this update.) I verified that I still had Highest Performance set in Energy saver also. This G5 owner reported the update reset that to "Automatic" and that setting it back to Highest helped:

"After update I got the fan problem: I use to have dcnet crunching in background, with a Dual 2Ghz G5 CPU at around 55°C under 10.3.7.

After update, temp lowered to around 46°C with fan speed increasing when load on CPU is heavier.

Before I had a Max Performance CPU setting under Energy Ctl Panel. I checked the setting and the 10.3.8 soft update put it on automatic. Reverting to Maximum solved the fan cycling.
Hope to help, Marc B. "

Interesting - normally automatic setting results in (generally) lower fan speed unless the CPU is highly stressed. (Unless there's some problem with automatic settings in 10.3.8). The Combo update did not reset that on my DP G5. If any G5 owner that saw increased fan speed after the 10.3.8 update finds that helps, let me know. Thanks. (Please include your Energy Saver Performance setting used.)

Reader reports on OS X 10.3.8 Update (G5 fans, WoW, MystIV, PCI Extreme, More)
I've posted a page of reader reports on 10.3.8 update (mails recd last night until about 7AM ET this morning). The most common issue reported so far was increased fan speed from some G5 owners (I do not see the problem here so far on my Combo updated 2003 G5 DP 2GHz.). There's some reports on 3rd party software issues like panther cache cleaner v2.4.6 (reportedly fixed in the 2.4.7 update ), uControl version 1.4.1/1.4.4 and spamfire (please include version numbers in reports on software compat. issues. thanks.)
There's also reports of improved World of Warcraft performance and Myst IV crash fixes, (although one 8500 owner said his games seemed choppier) and two reports on PCI Radeon Quartz Extreme working again. (10.3.7 broke that hack, tip noted here on the 10.3.7 feedback page was to replace the coregraphics framework - if you did that in 10.3.7 there's a note/tip on applying the 10.3.7 update again and then update to 10.3.8.)
See the 10.3.8 feedback page for full reports and a summary of pros/cons reported with links to jump to those reports.

More Trackpad Scroll Tricks for pre-2005 PowerBooks
(from a reader mail yesterday - updated)

" Mike,
I got my Girlfriend a new 12in powerbook, but after using the scroll enabled track-pad on it I was really jealous. ( I have the 1.33GHz 12in) I found this link
It enables the two finger scrolling on pre 2005 powerbooks and iBooks. I dont recommend the "all scroll modes enabled" because it causes the scrolling to jump around. I liked the hack so much, I made it permanent.
Adam "

I can't get that page to load this morning (hopefully temporary issue) so I asked Adam for more details.

" It replaces AppleADBMouse.kext in /System/Library/Extensions
here is the google cache
I'm sure the page is just overloaded right now
Adam "

Another option readers mentioned in the past is Sidetrack.

Mac Mini Owner reports/tips page updated (incl. more USB Wireless adapter info)
I've updated the Mac Mini Owner Reports/tips page again for more reader reports/links on USB to Wireless adapters, a note on a possible kit from Apple for dealer installs of Airport/Bluetooth (at near BTO price) and a Mini owner's request for help with a wake from sleep freeze. (I asked if he had installed 10.3.8 to see if that helped, since other Mini owners didn't mention that problem.)

iLife 05 Reports page updated (Formac Studio Issue/workaround)
I've updated the iLife 05 reports page with a note from Formac on the iMovie HD problem (device not recognized) that a reader previously reported. Here's a copy of the email from Formac that Bill D. sent:

" Dear Formac Studio customer,
it has come to our attention that Apple's iMovie 5 has problems with DV devices. This is a general issue with DV devices and not specific to the Studio. We strongly recommend not to upgrade to iMovie 5 yet, as we cannot guarantee the functionality of your Studio under these circumstances. We have informed Apple about this issue and hope to have a solution soon.
Best regards,
Your Formac support team "

The reader that originally reported the problem sent a follow-up:

"Mike, I have tried to disconnect/ reconnect the Studio TVR but this makes no difference. The Studio TVR is working ok as I can watch TV through it. Formac via their website have however suggested a work around:

'Save the video you require as a DV stream (Quicktime) and then import that into iMove HD.'

This seems to work but is quite long winded. The clip I tried and tested also did not have the sound interference problem that I have always had when I convert video via the Studio TVR. (To eliminate the sound interference, I had to extract the audio of every converted video clip!)

So the Formac work around does work. Lets hope Apple fix the problem ASAP. Hope this helps
Rick S."

I don't own iLife05 or the Formac Studio to test but if anyone finds that an update fixes this (like 10.3.8 or a future iMovie HD update) let me know. Thanks.
A Formac Studio owner wrote he's been using Vidi (free app noted in past news pages here)

" I use VIDI
ever since my very old Formac studio stopped working with iMovie 4. Happy with it.
Bert "

CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive/Cardreader Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 4 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 14,245 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports)

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • Firewire (cased) LG GSA-5160D used w/PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support.)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-K04L in PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(another PB owner report on the drive not being recognized)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-K04L in PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.3)
(noted drive worked in his 12in PB G4 w/native burn support)
  • IDE Sony DW-D22A in (MDD) Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 for iApps burn support.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
