Feedback/Tips on RealPlayer with Intel CPU iMacs
In reply to reader request in yesterday's news. (updated with tip to run browser plugin)

" Hi Mike, regarding the real player (browser plugin) issues, any safari or firefox plugin will only work if both the browser and the plugin are either universal or running in rosetta... a universal (binary) safari won't work with a rosetta plugin... but you can tell MacOS X to run Safari using Rosetta, (Get Info on Safari App to see that option.-Mike) and the plugin should work fine..
I read about this on the bugzilla for firefox...
-Daniel "

Earlier reports follow.

" My wife just bought a 17" Intel iMac. Realplayer 10 seems to run fine through Rosetta as a stand-alone program. However, it cannot be run as a plug-in through a Universal application. This means, for example, that Dashboard widgets such as the BBC Radio widget that call RealPlayer won't work, since Dashboard runs as a Universal app. (More info at http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2005/qa1451.html.) Web sites that call the Real plug-in won't work in Safari, either.

Supposedly if you force the Universal app (i.e. Safari in this case-Mike) to run through Rosetta (in the app's Get Info pane), Rosetta plug-ins will work, though I haven't had time to try it. (Naturally, this will make the app run slower.) I don't know if this is even possible with Dashboard, though it should be with Safari.

Also, I think it should work as a plug-in through another Rosetta app such as Firefox, though I haven't tried that, either.

Real says a Universal Binary is coming in the "near future," though they don't have a date:

" I can not get the plug in for Safari to work. It says its not installed every time I try and stream web embedded Real content.
-Andrew M."

" RealPlayer seems to work fine on my Intel (CPU) iMac. I used it yesterday to listen to some audio streams from NPR. No problems.
-Ben "

I assume he used the App not the plugin.

OWC Announces Free M-Audio Product Contest for Guitarists
(email PR from site sponsor OWC)

"OWC Announces Free M-Audio Product Contest for Guitarists
... A key player in bridging the music and technology industries, Other World Computing (OWC) is sponsoring a month-long contest via its website www.macsales.com that will allow guitar players a chance to win a free M-Audio Black Box Foot Controller.
Throughout the month of February, anyone purchasing an M-Audio Black Box Amp Modeler/Effects Processor/Audio interface through www.macsales.com or OWC's toll free (800) 275-4576 will automatically be entered into a drawing for a free Black Box Pedal Board Foot Controller.
"This is a fantastic opportunity that anyone serious about playing guitar is going to want to take advantage of," said Roger Adler, a four-time Emmy nominated musician and music consultant for OWC.

The M-Audio Black Box is the first creative tool for guitarists that combines amp modeling, powerful beat-synced effects and drum tracks with an audio interface for computer based recording.
As a stand-alone amp modeling and effects unit, the Black Box features spot-on models of 12 of the most popular guitar modern and vintage amps ever built. Virtual amp models include: Fender Bassman, Fender Deluxe, Fender Twin, Vox AC 30, Marshall JTM-45, Marshall Plexi, Marshall JCM-2000, Hiwatt DR-103, Soldano SLO-100, Mesa Boogie Maverick, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier and Bogner Uberschall.
Standard effects include tremelo, delay, chorus, auto-wah, and talk box. Unique effects include filter sequencing and arpeggios.
Recordings made with Black Box technology include Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", Beyonce's "Naughty Girl", Red Hot Chili Peppers' album "By the Way", Audioslave's self-titled album, Pearl Jam's "Riot Act", the Macy Gray album "The Trouble with Being Myself", and Beck's "Sea Change."

The Black Box Pedal Board features momentary switches that control tap tempo, select presets and drum beats, start/stop drums, and turn on/off the tuner, effects, amp, and delay. An expression pedal controls amp drive, effects speed/frequency/depth/key, wet/dry mix, delay volume/repeats, drums-to-delay, and drums-to-filter.

M-Audio Black Box purchases must be made through www.macsales.com or OWC's toll free (800) 275-4576 in order to qualify to win the Black Box Pedal Board Foot Controller.
In addition to the M-Audio Black Box Pedal Board Foot Controller, the winner of the OWC contest will receive international publicity, including being featured on www.macsales.com."

Another report on RAlink Wireless adapter drivers with OS X 10.4.4
(updated - see below)

" RAlink drivers, 10.4.4 and D-Link DWL-G122
Hi Mike, first of all, congrats for the excellent site. I went ahead and bought a D-Link G122 version B1. I downloded the latest drivers from RaLink (http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm) and it is sort of working. The main problem is the wake from sleep reconnections, i.e. at least in my system running 10.4.4, it does not reconnect.
I know the previous reader mentioning this a couple of days back has also posted the same on the RAlink forums and he did mention no problems with sleep, but I have found it not to be so. Is there any chance you can ask the readers to supply with necesary information/steps to solve this problem?
(he later wrote)
Upon installing the latest Ralink drivers to my MDD, (instead of the Powerbook), the sleep issue I emailed you earlier with the DWL-G122 ver B1 has disappeared... go figure. I am still trying to figure out why the same adapter under the same software has problems in the powerbook but not my MDD...
-Paris "

Even with the internal airport card, over the years I have often seen where waking from sleep will not reconnect to the network here (I thought some of the past 10.3.x updates helped but it didn't completely solve it - although it seems much more rare to have it happen in 10.3.9. I never updated to tiger on that machine) When that happens (the menu bar Airport icon is dim) I just turn off Airport and then turn it back on.
Paris later wrote:

" Thank you Mike, it seems that the TCP/IP was set to PPPoE, as soon as changed it to DHCP, sleep problems with reconnection on the PowerBook disappeared. Now I have to solve the signal problem, I may need to relocate the DSL modem/router or get an additional antenna...
Thanks again, Paris "

Orangeware Wireless driver update for OS X (for Atheros chip based adapters)
(from a reader mail - update to the driver mentioned in the FAQ's Networking section in the past)

" Just in case you haven't already noticed, Orangeware has released an update for their OSXY wireless driver (version 3.2)
It is supposed to be compatible with the new Atheros chip based CardBus and PCI cards (see the web page http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html)

Unfortunately, I have not had any luck trying to use it in on my old Power Mac 9600 (OSX 10.3.9) with a D-Link DWL-G520 (PCI) wireless network card. This is about the only way to make this Mac wireless - except for buying a much more costly wireless ethernet bridge or gaming adapter.
I'll continue my debugging efforts and let you know how it goes,
-Peter W. "

There are some Broadcom chip based PCI 802.11g cards that normally have native support in 10.2.8 and later (airport 3.x and later). I mentioned using a (under $40) Motorola PCI card bought from Wallmart a year or so ago in the news here although some said later revs changed the chipset. FAQ's networking section has info from past reports on Broadcom chip based adapters but remember vendors can change chipsets at any time. There's also RALink drivers/adapters that have been reported to work but I'd prefer a natively supported chip based card.

CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing
The Drive Compatibility Database had 8 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,526 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.

    DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
  • IDE Matshita UJ-845S in Powerbook G4 (OS X 10.4)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-K06 in PowerBook G4 (OS X 10.4)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-110D in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)
  • IDE Pioneer DVR-110D in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)
(although Tiger has basic iApps burn support for most drives including the 110D, he noted using Patchburn 4.)

    DVD-ROM Drives:
  • IDE Liteon SOHD-167T in Dual G4 (OS X)
(Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model, Beige G3 MT and B&W G3 Macs)

    Hard Drives:
  • IDE (SerialATA onboard) Seagate ST3500641AS 500GB in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)
(as mentioned before - 7200.9 drives ship with SSC enabled and require disabling it to be compatible with onboard G5 SATA. Seagate has a PC utility for that, but not a mac version.)
  • IDE (SerialATA onboard) Western Digital WD1500ADFD Raptor 150GB in G5 Tower (OS X 10.4)

    Pen Drives:
  • USB Dane-elec zMate USB 2.0 Pen (256MB) used w/G4 AGP (OS X 10.4)
    (listed under "other" brand.)

You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches). For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
