| Wanted: OS X Dual Monitor tweak/mod for Mac Mini with only DVI-I splitter (not DualHead2Go) |
I've had a couple readers ask I post a request to see if anyone has ideas on a tweak/patch for OS X to support dual monitors on a Mac Mini using only a (low-cost) DVI splitter cable - which reportedly has worked in Windows on an Intel-based Mini (The DVI splitter cable has connectors for both VGA (15pin analog) and DVI digital displays, as both sets of outputs are present in the
DVI-I connector.) These splitter cables are very inexpensive - here's one for $14.95 and another one for $9.99.
The OF patch from several years ago for dual display support with some eMacs, iMac G4s,& iBooks was reported to not work with the Mini (even the PPC mini).
If anyone knows of a tweak/mod to get dual display support in OS X with a Mac Mini w/splitter cable only (without having to buy a DualHead2Go), let me know. Thanks.
BTW - The hope was to find a tweak/patch for OS X to avoid having to spend $169 on a Matrox DualHead2Go, which will work for using 2 Analog (15pin) monitors (see DualHead2Go compatibility list, Mac system info at bottom of page), but doesn't allow the use of a digital/DVI display. A PPC Mini owner wrote with some notes on using the DualHead2Go:
"
I have a Mac Mini (G4 1.42 MHz, 512 MB) working fine with a Matrox
DualHead2Go. This might not be precisely what you had in mind, but it
does allow 2560 x 1024 @ 60Hz. Fine for Final Cut Pro and Avid DV
Xpress. (I assume he's using LCD displays, as most would not want to use a CRT at 60Hz due to flicker)
Interestingly it carries over the bug that Dual screen Avids had with
Matrox cards, the overlay is sluggish on screen 2, but fine on screen
1, when running Quicktime viewers. Placing the mouse on the QT screen
overlay gets it going again. It is although a screen refresh callback
is missing in the drivers or hardware. Below is the System Profiler
grab. As you can see, Mirroring is not supported.
(he later wrote)
If 2560x1024 is selected, one screen 2560x1024 spanned across two monitors each 1280x1024
If 1280x1024 is selected, mirrored 1280x1024 on each screen, so mirroring is supported but not reported in System Profiler

(info from Apple System Profiler)
ATI Radeon 9200:

"
(The Intel-based Mini has onboard Intel GMA-950 graphics, also supported by the DualHead2Go, as is a long list of other graphics models.)
Another Mini owner mentioned using the splitter cable for easy switching between a monitor and projector:
"
I have a Pacific Cable splitter, the VGA end goes to a touchscreen,
the DVI end to a Panasonic PT-AE700 projector. This setup works, but
not simultaneously: i.e. I cannot switch on both displays at the same
time. But it saves the hassle of changing the cable from touchscreen
to projector.

| Genesis MP800 (Quad 200MHz 604e) on Ebay |
I don't usually post ebay auctions, but knowing I was an old Genesis fan, Rick Pepper sent a link to a Daystar Genesis MP Quad on eBay. Not sure what the reserve is but I'm sure it's a lot higher than the current bid as of early this morning (only $26 as of 11AM eastern time).
I have 2 Genesis systems (boxed up in the garage since the move in 2004). I think my MP board is a Quad 180 or 200 (can't recall now). I was trying to find a Quad 225MHz card back in the late 90's
but they were hard to find (and expensive then).
As a FYI to any Quad Genesis owners, the Ebay seller notes it has OS 8.5 on it, but
I think OS 9.x broke support for Quad CPUs but somewhere here I still have a beta OS 9.x multiprocessor support file (sent by Daystar many years ago).
I kept the Quad MP Genesis basically stock, but built a 2nd one from parts bought over
time in the late 90's (I paid over $1000 back then IIRC for just the case and motherboard.) I posted a page here in 1998 on that Upgraded Genesis system, but the page doesn't reflect the last upgrades to it - a Voodoo5 PCI card and (rare) Dual G4/450 CarrierZIF CPU card. I also have (if I can still find it) the original owners manual
and Service Manual (which has all the pinouts, etc.) I wonder what his reserve is. (I'd not sell either of mine for less than $1000 - which means I'll be keeping them forever I guess.)
