| More reports on using Dell 1500 draft-N cards in Core Duo Macs |
| The Feb. 13th news page had a report on Upgrading Core Duo Macs with a Dell notebook 802.11n adapter card, although I'd prefer using an Apple N card (Mac Pro kit has been most popular) for the reasons I mentioned in that post (future updates, etc.). Here's a couple mails from readers since then that used the Dell 1500 card:
"
Just wanted to let you know about my experiences with swapping a a/b/g wireless adapter out of my gen 1 MBP with a Dell Wireless 1500
Draft N mini PCI-E Module. The swap was easy and done in about 10
minutes. I installed the (Apple) pre-"N" enabler drivers using Pacifist and
re-booted.
The good news is that the card worked as a standard a/b/g wireless
card. The bad news is that I didn't see the "n" in the Network
application.
I did some testing and it looks like my reception has been improved
slightly - but not much else different.
I tried a PRAM reset, re-installing the drivers again, etc. but still
no luck. Wondering if anyone out there has some ideas? (tried repairing permissions? clearing caches? rebooting a couple times? He later said RP, rebooting, etc. didn't help. Per an Apple kbase doc in Late January, Apple 802.11N Enabler "requires" the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update released back on Jan. 25th. He later wrote installing the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update solved the problem.-Mike)
By the way, when installing the card, I had to swap the antenna
cables around as the primary and secondary antenna ports on the Apple
card are on opposite sides to the Dell card. No a big deal really.
(Note: other readers using the Dell 1500 card did NOT mention doing this swap.-Mike)
Any feedback would be great.
Cheers, SF
"
I had one reader that installed the Mac Pro N card also say Network Utility didn't show it as a "N" compatible (listed 802.11a/b/g, not a/b/g/n as apple mentions in How to tell if 802.11n-enabling software is installed doc), although others said it was reported as N compatible after a reboot. I later wrote him to ask if he had installed the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update. (Apple 802.11N Enabler "requires" the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update they say.) He replied after installing the AE 2007-001 update it's now shown as N compatible and also commented on the airport cable swap.
"Mike, Good news! On your advice this morning, I had forgotten to apply the Airport Extreme 2007-001 update. (released on January 25th for Intel Macs) I did that, rebooted and the Dell card now shows up as "N" in Network Utility. Sensational!
I will be doing some testing over the next few days and will let you know how it goes. I also read the comments from a poster (Another Dell 1500 card swap user in Tuesday's news) about Dell antenna wires (*NOT*) being swapped. (Other readers using the dell card did not swap antenna wires.-Mike) I'm still looking into that as Dell has two symbols for their antenna connectors on the card. One filled in triangle and one triangle outline. I assumed the filled in triangle was the main antenna and the outlined triangle was the secondary antenna. Hence why I swapped antennas.
Have I assumed wrong?
Cheers, SF"

I ordered the Dell 1500 mini card and installed it tonight in a MacBook Pro 1.83GHz
Intel Core Duo (Merom) using the instructions on your site (including the Pacifist step) and it works just fine (the way it should work... ~130Mbps link rate).
(I asked to verify Network Utility showed it has an 802.11a/b/g/n adapter - he later said yes it did. He also used Pacifist to install the Apple 802.11n enabler. Pacifist is needed to install the enabler on core duo Macs unless you've already installed the new Airport Extreme 802.11n base airport software, which installs the enabler without any system ID check per earlier reports.-Mike)
I ordered two more of them directly from Dell. They are in stock. Of
course, you will pay more than $49 from Dell. They charged me $63 per unit.
-Marc.
"
I'd still prefer the ($49 list) Mac Pro card kit personally as one question I had was once the 802.11n spec is finalized, if there are updates (firmware updates) how will Mac users apply them (although for bootcamp users, it may be possible to run a Windows XP/PC updater)

| Finder Crashes after Stuffit Deluxe 11.0.2 install |
| (I'm not using Stuffit 11, but posting as a FYI.)
"
Hi Mike, I thought i would inform you of a problem that has been discovered
with the Stuffit Deluxe 11.
After installing the (Stuffit Deluxe) 11.0.2 update I suffered from Finder quits when
right clicking with my Mighty Mouse. At the time I had no idea what
was causing it and ending up doing and Archive & Install and
eventually a complete reformat and install. The problem reappeared a
day after that. This morning, i have discovered the following
information that will be very useful to other people in the same
situation. From the link, it appears that it is the plugin that
causes the problem and not the mouse. The info on the link might save
others from the pain of reinstalling etc.
Why does the Finder keep crashing, once I have updated to Stuffit Deluxe 11.0.2. (Note: includes download link for a patch.-Mike)
Kind Regards,
Kevan Gordon

The linked page above has a download link and patch install info but a reader said that a later build of the 11.0.2 update don't have the problem. (Gerry mentioned 11.0.2 Build 627 for instance.)
