Any other Logic 8 users have a problem after QT 7.4.1 Update?
From a reader mail tonight (Updated with what he said eventually fixed it and see below for other Logic 8 user reply that has not seen any problems so far with his PPC Mac)

(combination of several mails)
"I got a 2.4Ghz 17inch MBP, running Logic Pro 8.0,1 on Leopard 10.5.1. Since I updated QuickTime to 7.4.1 today, playing back in Logic stops every minute or so. I am using MOTU 828mkII, but I don't think this is a driver issue. Logic was working flawlessly until I updated to 7.4.1 this afternoon.
If I open close a song and reopen it, it works again...for a minute or so. This seriously broke something.
I did a regular routine of troubleshootings like reparing permissions and rebooting. I even tried to downgrade to 7.4 using Paclist, but still got the same issue.
Apple released a number of updates this week, but I wonder what broke it. But as far as I can tell, before installing 7.4.1 today, it was working well. I updated to ProKit 4.5 yesterday.

(I asked if he had used the download updater, rebooted clean before install, no other apps running, etc. and if he remembered for sure that it was OK after the Prokit 4.5 update but before QT 7.4.1 install. Worst case IMHO is using SU with other apps running.)
I used Software Update with Mail and Camino running.
I had run Logic after the ProKit 4.5, and it's been working fine until I installed QT 7.4.1 today.
(I'd double check settings in Audio/Midi setup (in case something got corrupted/changed), download the updates, shut down, reboot clean - maybe even boot to Safe Mode (shift key down), nothing else running, apply the updates, force prebind, reboot... and for good measure, disconnect/reconnect the Moto. Worst case, do you have a backup of your drive before the recent updates? (I keep a CCC cloned b/u of boot drive with known stable OS version/config that I do not update over until I know later updates have proven OK.) If all else fails (and no backups) maybe try reinstalling 10.5.1 from the download updater. -Mike)
No (backup)... I reinstalled QT 7.4.1 and did force prebinding. Still the same issue. I even reinstalled MOTU driver. Now Logic is crashing if I try to quit after playback stops... (crash log attached)
(does it matter if the Moto is not used/connected?)
I just tried this. Even with built-in, this still is the problem.
(the next day he wrote)
Just wanted to let you know that I fixed the problem by deleting caches, using Leopard Cache Cleaner. After updating QT to 7.4.1, I got a message (which I've seen with various system updates for Leopard) for clearing boot caches or something like that. (you mean the message just before shutdown/restart that says it's writing cache IIRC.) -Juno"

As usual (most problems are not 100% common) - other Logic 8 users said they've not seen problems with the QT Update:

" Not had that issue so far on the Leopard system (10.5.1 I assume?-Mike), and haven't installed it yet on the Tiger OS. Reluctant now!
(Just for the record I asked what Mac he's using and to recap)
- My current work horse is a G5 PPC 2.7Ghz
- Logic 8.0.1 on both Leopard and Tiger systems (different partitions, same Mac)
(you did apply QT 7.4.1 (and Prokit 4.5))
Yesterdays Prokit 4.5 (only) on Tiger, Both QT 7.4.1 and Prokit 4.5 on the 10.5 system, although have noticed no issues with it.
(And to confirm - you have seen no audio/logic problems (such as the earlier logic 8 user reported here))
- boringly no, none.
-Bobbi"

Rarely are problems 100% common (with some exceptions). But there's an almost infinite number of possible variations in installed hardware/software, codecs, addons, configuration, etc. - rarely are 2 systems in the wild exactly the same in all respects.

After Effects 8.0.2 user notes QT 7.4.1 fixes previous issue w/QT 7.4
In reply to the earlier post below on QT 7.4.1 update today, an After Effects user said the update fixed the problems seen with QT 7.4 previously:

" Mike, This new QT update has fixed the issue with After Effects CS3 8.0.2. With QT 7.4, any render would fail after 10 minutes, and would have to be restarted.
With 7.4.1, my render took 16 min, and worked perfectly. Just FYI.
-Joel "

I don't use After Effects and unlike some other readers (that had seen itunes playback skipping for instance) I didn't have any issues with QT 7.4. I applied QT 7.4.1 on the 10.5.1 AL iMac and 10.3.9 PB G4 - initial tests with QT/iTunes, EyeTV, etc. shows no problems here so far.
Matthew wrote he sent a note about his repair permissions results (first try failed, 2nd try still showed (in addition to the common "ARDagent") some user differences on JavaVM.framework jvm.cfg and classlist files - I think I saw those same 2 items myself after the previous QT update, but I don't now on this AL iMac after a check tonight).
I haven't routinely ran repair permissions lately (the old "before and after" routine) after having RP break some features in my HP 7180 v9.7 Leopard drivers as I mentioned here last month - although I applied the HP update that was claimed to address that. I'm not going to mess with it right now for no reason. (Another ultra-conservative tip is to apply updates (from downloads) after booting into safe mode - and RP before and after updates normally shouldn't hurt either - the HP software problem from RP in 10.5.1 isn't a common issue.)

BTW: Around 2AM Thursday morning I decided to test if the HP patch for the RP issue actually fixed the problem as they claimed. I ran repair permissions on the AL iMac (10.5.1 w/all current updates) - as I had seen before, there was a -LONG- streaming list of HP printer software related file permission differences. (I cut and pasted the results into a text editor and saved it - the file was 1.5MB!! - pages and pages long, compounded by included multi-language packages installed.) However other than the usual/common ARDagent item - I saw no other Apple software related ones. (And after the repair, a "verify" permissions didn't show any HP related items.) And I'm happy to say the HP patch must have worked as a test print from iPhoto showed the paper source and ink options were still present in the printer setup dialogs, and print output was fine.

Apple posts Quicktime 7.4.1 Update (Security and 3rd party compat. fixes)
Appears in software update but as usual I'm using the download updater (I like to save a copy of updaters to an ext. drive also in case I ever have to reinstall from the original Disc.) Apple's downloads page has Leopard, Tiger, Panther and Windows download updaters. Here's the info from the software update panel:

"QuickTime 7.4.1 addresses security issues and improves compatibility with third-party applications. This release is recommended for all QuickTime 7 users.
For detailed information on the security content of this update, see About the security content of QuickTime 7.4.1."

If you find QT 7.4.1 fixes or breaks anything, let me know the details. Thanks.
(BTW - Apple now has a kbase doc titled No audio during iTunes Store video playback with iTunes 7.6 for Windows XP that says QT 7.4.1 is a fix.)
I downloaded the updater, rebooted and installed it on a 10.5.1 iMac and 10.3.9 PB G4 here - ran some quick tests with iTunes, QT movies, EyeTV, etc. - seems ok on these two systems. See later post above for initial feedback from others - including note it fixed the issue with QT 7.4 and After Effects 8...)

Odd problems seen after ProKit 4.5 update
Last night when I posted the apple updates to iPhoto 7.1.2 and ProKit 4.5 (and Braille support), I didn't follow my usual rules on applying updates. (I didn't do a clean reboot then install, then force prebinding from terminal, then reboot again - just as a way to minimize the potential for any install problems, although personally I've rarely had any problems just using Software Update, although I at least quit all running apps first.) I downloaded and applied the iPhoto and ProKit 4.5 update (which appeared in SU also even though this iMac w/10.5.1 didn't have any of the Pro apps listed) while still having Mail, Safari, Firefox (both with a dozen or more pages open) and TextWrangler open. I hadn't rebooted the system for days (just sleeping/waking it many times day and night). Maybe not a factor (and recently I had left Firefox open for days with many pages loaded - in my experience that's led to CPU hogging over time) but since those updates I've seen some odd behavior including:

  • A text file (the news.xml text file) showed 3 black/graphic squares in it (closed file/re-opened it to clear that - nothing else did).
  • On wake from sleep ( 3rd time since 6AM this morning) about an hour ago this time the system was unresponsive (could not switch between apps, some odd graphic highlighting - 2nd attempt at force quit got no response).
  • Several times in the last few days (still happening) while browsing the web a page will not load/safari reports "You are not connected to the Internet." (Using AL iMac builtin Airport N, Apple Airport N base in mixed mode/2.4GHz, sharing DSL modem.) Checking network prefs looks ok - signal strength excellent, other Macs on same network ok. Turning airport off/back on from menu bar usually fixes it - but frustrating. I know others had seen Airport problems in Leopard (and even later versions of Tiger) but I hadn't until now.

So I did a force shutdown, then rebooted, which resulted in Adobe updater check showing a script update for PShop CS3, which I applied. After it finished normally (and I dismissed the updater dialog), I could not eject the mounted dmg updater in the Finder. (Pressing eject arrow/symbol repeatedly did nothing - a reader said he's commonly seen this in Leopard before and just quits/restarts the Finder - but I hadn't ever had this problem on the iMac and have ejected ext. volumes, Software Updaters/dmg files, etc. many, many times in the last few months.)
I rebooted again, did a force prebinding from the terminal/rebooted again then did a verify on all drives (internal and 3 FW external mtg volumes - TM, Storage volume and CCC clone volume) and rebooted again. Hopefully those problems won't repeat as this system has previously been very reliable in Leopard. (But I've still seen the sudden "not connected to the internet" problem...)
BTW - a very old tip here from years ago (for the ultra-conservative) is to boot into safe mode (shift key) and then apply updates from the download updaters (avoids startup item/login item/driver loading, etc.) - although in general over the years I rarely had problems with update installs even using only Software Update (w/no apps running). But an oz. of prevention is worth a pound of cure as they say.

Newer Tech 802.11N/G/B adapters (PCI, USB, PCMCIA) from $52.50
FYI to readers, the Edimax 802.11n adapters previously on the site specials page have been replaced with the Newer Tech line:

" Have replaced the Edimax 802.11n products with our NewerTech product line and now with prices for XLR8YourMac readers from $52.50 to $55.00 depending on the model. Our NewerTech line comes with the Mac driver + a real Mac manual right in the box and full Mac support from NewerTech of course... And no one getting better pricing than your readers on this line.
The NewerTech USB 802.11n/g/b adapter unlike some others includes an extension cradle so you can better position for reception if so desired. It works straight to the USB port too, but the extender cradle is a nice bonus for those that need that extra positioning.
(The PCI card model includes a triple antenna pod that can also be relocated.)

Also on the list too is our 802.11n/g/b performance router. At $95 it's one of the most cost competitive 802.11n routers on the market while also being among the most feature laden.
Best Regards,
Lawrence R. O'Connor
Other World Computing"

Also they've added 2008 Mac Pro 4GB (2x2GB) RAM kits (800MHz) to the site specials page. (Other sizes/options are on their Mac Pro memory page.)

First feedback on SuperDuper! v2.5 (Leopard compatible)
First reader feedback on the (Leopard compatible) Superduper! 2.5 update released yesterday. (Combination of several mails from him during the day yesterday)

" I just downloaded SD 2.5 and it requires you to register and pay before you can use it. I am a little reluctant to pay for something until I know it works. They have been messing around with it for months....hopefully it has been debugged....
The earlier version was free for user that did not need or want the special features. I told them I would register and pay once I was satisfied the new version worked. The new version I downloaded will not run without registration.he later wrote)
I just registered and doing a backup at this time. SD can be run in the free mode but if you want to do a smart backup, you have register.
The SD docs say:
"Note that SuperDuper operates in two different "modes" - registered and unregistered. The unregistered version allows easy, complete and userspecific backup clones to partitions, FireWire drives, and image files.
Once registered, SuperDuper allows you to schedule backups, quickly update backups with Smart Update (saving a lot of time), select *copy modes” other than Erase, then copy, create Sandboxes, fully customize the copying process using its unique Copy Scripts, save and restore settings, and avoid authenticating every time you copy..."

(and the final mail noting a successful backup/boot from backup)
I just had SuperDuper 2.5 repair permissions and back up my primary Macintosh HD to SuperDuper Backup partition on an external hard drive that is shared the the Time Machine. The proof is the appended screenshot that shows my iMac booted from the SuperDuper Backup external drive. Everything I need seems to be be working after registration.
-Richard"

I've never bought SuperDuper! although many readers in the past did (and liked it). For years I've just used Carbon Copy Cloner for bootable clones (used it again for my AL iMac 10.5.1 clone to ext. drive). It doesn't have all the features of SuperDuper though... nor the time savings... (Had to mention that to avoid more mails like these LOL)
Here's some replies on that topic from other SD users:

"FWIW, Mike, SD is 3x faster at incremental (changed-files-only[CFO]) than CCC. Using CCC, a CFO backup of my 300 gigs/2M files takes 60 minutes. Takes 18 minutes with SD. And while CCC clones certainly do work, SD's clones produce a better backup with fewer mistakes, and all-in-all a better image.
Just a satisfied user.
-Tracy V. "

And another reminder:

" The reason to buy SuperDuper is simple - 50min vs 6min. If you back up regularly SD with smart update saves you a lot of time. Worth the money. And what I dislike with Time Machine is that when I decide to get rid of a file I want it gone forever and not siting on a HD saved as a run by TM.
Just my 2 cents.
-Namaste "

As mentioned here a month or so ago - like some other readers using Time Machine, I keep TM off and only use the "Back Up now" option once a day or so as need be. (And I remove any files I -never- want again beforehand - personally I do not like another backup background process and hourly/automatic updates - but that's just me.) I still keep a (not updated frequently) CCC clone of a previous -known stable- OS version/configuration to fall back on in case I find out several days after an update that there's a problem with it.
