- The Exorcist (hopefully) deals with new 666 variant
[MacFixIt report: "Victor Orly reported finding on his drive what
appears to be a new variant of the "666" (or SevenDust/Graphics
Accelerator) virus. The 666 file was in his Extensions folder. Other
files may have been affected as well.
Joe Laffey (author of Graphics Innoculator) has already created a new
program, called "The Exorcist," to hopefully deal with this. He writes:
"This new AppleScript attempts to inoculate against the '666' virus by
creating a locked file in the System Folder. It also works over an
AppleTalk network."] (MacFixIt)

= 4:00 PM Update =
A reader commented that he was told by ProMax that Maxtor IDE drives need special software to work with their TurboMax card:
"
He said, however, that the Maxtor drive won't work with the adapter
without a piece of $100+ software from Remus. Do you know about this? He added that the IBM and Quantum drives run without the software.
"
That makes no sense to me, and there was no mention made of any Remus software required in Thad Brown's recent article here on TurboMax IDE Tests that included a Maxtor IDE drive. The only Remus I know is Adaptec's Remus Raid (SCSI) software.
I used Apple drive setup 1.5 and 1.6 fine using Apple's onboard IDE controller with the Maxtor drive. Drive Setup 1.7 would update the drive after version 1.5 or 1.6 had been used previously to prep the drive. Both my beige G3 and B&W IDE slave drive articles used the Maxtor IDE drive and Apple drive setup driver.
Mike Bosshard wrote to say he'd tried an IDE Superdisk drive in the B&W G3 and it didn't work. He said he tried Apple drive setup and FWB's drivers with no luck.
Sponsor Bottom Line sent a note they just received 200 pcs. of the Keyspan USB to 2-Port Serial Adapters and have 45 left available after backorders. Their current price is $78.99
C/Net has a new article on how the iMac may change computers forever. They also look at some new PC knockoff attempts.

VillageTronic MP850-750 - QuickTime accelerators for MPEG/YUV,
v1.1.2/v1.1.4 updates are at www.villagetronic.com/mac/index_support.html
Sorry there were no updates yesterday, but thanks to antibiotics and Advil/Tylenol I'm feeling a bit better today.
The scores for the Maxtor 10GB DiamondMax Plus IDE drive were inadvertently omitted when I updated the MacBench 5 graph in the Ultra2 SCSI Card Review for the Cheetah U2 drive. I've restored them this morning.
Virtual Network Computing: Graeme Humphries writes:
"
I don't know if you've heard of Virtual Network Computing, but I thought I'd pass the word on since I found out about it yesterday and was amazed. It's an Open Source project (GPLed) that basically does what Timbuktu does, only more and on more platforms. It has a client and a server for every platform (there's even a JAVA client) and it lets you control any computer running the server over a TCP/IP network.
Its webpage is at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc and here's a
list of some of the platforms it works on:
Official:
Macintosh FAT viewer, PPC server
Solaris 2.5 (SPARC) viewer & server
Linux 2.0.x for x86
DEC Alpha OSF1 3.2
Win32 (Intel) 95, 98, & NT
Windows CE 2.x SH3 processor and MIPS processor
Java client
3rd Party Ports:
MacOS alternate viewer with Appearance Manager and Navigation Services support,
Acorn RISC OS viewer, Amiga viewer, BeOS viewer (server in progress),
BSDI, Cygwin32, DOS, FreeBSD, GGI, HPUX, KDE specific viewer, OpenStep/Mach (Rhapsody?) viewer, OS/2 viewer, PalmPilot viewer, SCO, OpenServer, SGI Irix, SPARC linux, SunOS 4.1.3, SVGALib & Single, Floppy linux, VMS viewer, Windows NT Alpha.
I've installed it on a Win98 box, a WinNT server, a linux server and my Mac at home, and all of them can see and manipulate each other over the net. It's possible to even launch the viewer on 1 machine, connect to another, launch the viewer on that machine and connect to a 3rd! Not to mention the possibilities of being able to remote-control your Mac from a PalmPilot!
Anyway, I thought it was really really cool,
Graeme Humphries

Slava Karpenko, lead programmer for @soft wrote on Wednesday that he
thinks he's nailed the crashing bug problem in MacAMP lite 1.5. Good to his word, I see that there is MacAMP Lite 1.5.1 update released yesterday.
IDE SuperDisk Drive in B&W G3: Has anyone out there tried an IDE Superdisk drive in the B&W G3? I'm running a OEM ZIP drive in that bay now but have been curious for some time if the IDE Superdisk would work. They're sold at most Office Depot's, etc. for about $100 (internal version) before rebates. If you've tried this please contact me. [Update: initial reports say it does not work at all]
Rick Thorp sent a note he created a page about his upgrade experiences,
and I think we'll all recognize the addictive nature of wanting more performance (a never ending quest).

let your readers know that the adsl service they seek can be obtained from
flashcom. i do not work for them, i am a customer of theirs. i consult to
companies here in LA and in New York. i have 6 flawless installs running
here and in ny. funny thing flashcom uses bell atlantic in ny and there are
no problems getting invidual computers and nets activated. they are also the
cheapest. usually 10 bucks cheaper than bell atlantic including internet
account. i access you every day over my symmetric 384k connection. i run a
web sever, ftp and email servers off this coonection and have a whole office
running off it. they can be reached at 1 877 flashcom or at
www.flashcom.com.

Forums Still Down: My forums at resurge are still not working - 'access denied'. I've written Victor explaining the problem but as of 7AM this morning all I get is the same access denied message.
Although it's geared to the PC, Gamespot's 'Voodoo3 vs Pentium III: Which Matters Most?' article might be of interest to gamers.
Since I was sick all day yesterday here I didn't get to post Carmine's news feed until now.
