PowerBook G3 Prices also Cut Today - PB G3/500 now $2199:
Another reader replied to the earlier post on G4 system price cuts to note that the Apple Store has lowered prices on the PowerBook G3/400 and G3/500 to $1999 and $2199 respectively. That's a huge price cut on the PB G3/500 from the original price. (I reviewed the PB G3/500 here last spring). I can't wait to see what is announced at MWSF.

Using Sherlock to Delete Temporary Items:
A reader replied to the reminder on wasted disk space due to leftover files in the Temporary Items folder with a note that you don't need utils like Eradicator to remove them.

" I'm running OS 8.6 and I found another way to get rid of left over Temporary files. Using Sherlock, search for "temporary". This will return the Temporary Items folder in the search results. Even though the folder is "grayed out", you can still drag items from inside of it to the trash. As you pointed out for using Eradicator, this is advisable only after a clean boot with no other apps running.

Apple also posted an Applescript routine in a TIL that would trash the files as well if I remember correctly. I had always assumed this issue was with OS 9 only.

(In this news update I've also added the latest updates to the Drive Compatibility, CPU Upgrades and Video card performance databases - see below)

Apple Cuts Prices on G4 Towers and G4/450 Cube:
A reader noted the Apple Store today has sharp price cuts on G4 Towers - the G4 400/64MB/20GB /DVD ROM is now $1,299, the Dual G4 450/128MB/30GB/DVD ROM is $1,999, and the Dual G4 500/256MB/40GB/DVD RAM is $2,499. The low end G4 Cube also has a price cut to $1,499. A reader noted he could not seem to revise configurations such as adding more RAM, or selecting a Radeon card, etc. (Note: The previous rebates expired Dec 31st, 2000 which were up to $500 on a dual G4/500 system.) The general opinion is these price cuts are to clear out inventory for possible new systems to be announced at MacWorld San Francisco next week.

  • Update to Dec 24th report on Samsung IDE drive in B&W G3 ZIP bay, noting the drive failed within a week or so. (unknown if this was a random failure or overheating . Apple does not reccomend hard drives be mounted in the ZIP bay, although he noted he'd run a Seagate drive there for some time)

You can find these full reports by searching the database with the drive/brand/mac models listed above selected (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.
