New G4/533 Owner w/Nvidia GeForce2MX Reports OpenGL Gaming Problems:
(Note - See Friday's news for a followup that notes why Nick saw problems, along with other GeForce owner reports and a Review of a G4/533 with GeForce2MX.) I don't know how common this is but a new G4/533 owner reported problems (type 12 errors/crashes to the Finder) in OpenGL games. Another reader is working on a review of the new system for posting here and I've asked if he's tried running OpenGL games but have not gotten a reply yet. The problems reported may not show up in running a simple timedemo, and echoes concerns I have had about the first version of the Nvidia drivers. (I still wonder how 2D, 3D pro apps like Lightwave 3D and applications like Final Cut Pro run with the GeForce2MX - I've asked Nvidia - but they never replied with answers.)

" Hey
I got my G4 533Mhz/256Mb of ram/40Gb HD/GeForce 2 MX 3 days ago (well.. It might be what, 2 days ago for you.. Because I'm in Australia) and I'm blown away.

But, there's quite a problem with the nVidia OpenGL drivers. Whenever I load up an OpenGL based game the menu will come up all nice and how its ment to, but as soon as you launch a level and try to play, it crashes back to the Finder with an error type 12. I've Quake 3, Elite Force, Unreal Tournament (w/OpenGL support) and they all exhibit the exact same behaviour and error.

I've zapped the PRAM, re-installed (games and OS), fiddled with extensions and then I formatted just then. Although Quake 3 seems to be a little better (less crashing) the same thing still happens. So yeah, I've had a bit of fun in Quake 3, and the image quality is amazing (all the settings up @ 800x600.. And it was getting a very very smooth FPS)

I didnĚt really know who the ask for help... I posted a message in the Apple Discussion forums but no helpful answers came about (and now I can't log back in :(). I couldn't think of who I should report it too either, so I thought I'd give you a shot :)

I'm running Mac OS 9.1 (the version that came on the PowerMac G4 System Install CD) and the rest of my specs are up the top.

I had a SCSI card installed by the Apple Reseller, and I haven't removed it to see if it changes anything...

Oh well, maybe you could pass this on to someone who should really know about this.
Thanks in advance,
- Nick -
P.S RAVE, 2D and QuickTime all work wonderfully"

I've asked for more info on the game versions, etc. but if any other new system owners are running a GeForce2MX, let me know if you have any tips or are seeing any problems.

[Update: I originally replied to Nick with some suggestions, one included not allocating too much RAM to OpenGL games. He later reported that he had allocated a lot of RAM to OpenGL games and that lowering the RAM allocation helped as well as disabling iControl and Kaleidoscope. [Always disable 3rd party extensions when problems arise]. Another G4/533 w/GeForce2MX owner also replied to this post saying he had the same problems in games. I sent suggestions to him also and asked for more info.]

DVD Player 2.3 - Only in Full CD Version of OS 9.1?
[Update: One reader reported booting from the system CD and then running the OS 9.1 as recommended by Apple resulted in a DVD 2.3 player update. I just did exactly that on my Gigabit G4/500 - it *did not* update the DVD player, in fact it even removed it from the Apple Menu Items.] A reader reported that even using TomeViewer, the latest DVD Player (software decoding) 2.3 version is not found in either the multi-part or single file version of the downloadable OS 9.1 update. (I used TomeViewer here and saw the same thing.) He noted it was included on the OS 9.1 CD which you can order from Apple. He said that v2.3 added the ability to play VIDEO_TS folders from any drive and I hope it also allows playing widescreen DVD movies on a Cinema display without having to use the Fkey hack (noted on the past Cinema Display review here). I'm hoping the 2.3 DVD player will be released soon at Apple's software updates page or via OS 9.1's Software Update Control Panel. There is a v1.3 DVD Player in the downloadable OS 9.1 update, but I think that's for the DVD player that requires the B&W G3 (or G4/Yikes) models that had the Rage128 MPEG daughtercard DVD option (and perhaps PB G3 early models with the PCCard DVD decoder).
