Status of ATI PCI Radeon Driver Update:
Here's the latest info I have on the driver update to fix the PCI Radeon issues noted previously (and I suspect to also address some common Radeon issues like Falcon4 RAVE mode).

" I don't know of a specific release date unfortunately, however the idea is to have it out this week. As far as we know all of the driver issues were resolved late last week and it's being QA'd right now on a wide variety of machines to ensure that it works smoothly across the board. As soon as QA signs off on it, it'll be available for downloading.

How to Tell if Your ADS Firewire Case Has the Power-Off Fix:
Last year we had a news item regarding a warning at ADS's web site about potential damage to the firewire/IDE bridge if the Pyro case was left connected for more than 5 minutes when the (case) power was off. [This is NOT a problem in normal use; only if you forget to disconnect the cable from the computer after turning off AC power to the case.] That info has since been removed and ADS revised the bridge board to eliminate the problem. Steve Berry wrote with info from ADS on how to tell if your case is the revised model:

" The new redesigned PCBs in the drive kit can be left off when the PC is on w/o a problem. You can tell if you have a redesigned drive kit is when you turn off the drive kit to the computer that is on, the light of the drive kit is completely off instead of being dimmer....
Sincerely,
ADS Tech #4"

I've updated the FAQ info with the above note for future reference.

$39 Newer Tech's ZIF Carrier Cards Sold Out:
(Update: TekServe has sold out now and said " they are getting swamped with calls from all over the USA" from my web site posting. Sorry to those that didn't get one but some daily readers did manage to snag the last of their stock.) A reader replied to my article on Newer's Carrier card saying he was able to order two of the cards for $39 each from the vendor listed in the article (TekServe). I didn't think they did mail order and I'm not sure how many they have left, but just a FYI to those that may be interested. (As noted in the article - all sales final and there's no warranty since Newer Tech is closing.)

Best regards,
Rene. "

Don't forget to enter your results in our Video card/system benchmark database.

Corrupt Display in B&W G3 w/PCI Radeon and Rage128 Combo:
A forum thread on PCI Radeons here had a link to a ATI tech note on display corruption in a B&W G3 when running a PCI Radeon and Rage128. The problem occurs when a Rage128 card is in a 33MHz PCI slot and the PCI Radeon is in the 66MHz PCI slot. (I suspect this affects the G4/PCI Yikes also, since it's based on the same motherboard.) This issue is supposed to be fixed in the (due soon) Radeon driver update that fixes other PCI Radeon problems noted here previously.

CDRW/CD/DVD/HD Compatibility Database Updates:
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 8 new entries added (current total 2,599). Entries from after midnight are added the following day. I've added "Firewire to SCSI Adapter" as one of the interface types. I welcome reports on drives used with adapters. (Please note the adapter brand/model and if the drive was bootable in your comments.)

(noted iTunes burn compatible, running OS 9.1)
  • IDE Sony 140E 8x4x32 in G4/AGP
(noted iTunes burn compatible, running OS 9.1)
  • IDE Teac CD-W54E in Beige G3
  • Firewire to SCSI Adapted Yamaha 6416 w/G4 Cube
  • SCSI Sony 4x8 CDR w/PowerTower Pro

(IDE IBM drive in firewire case)
  • SCSI Seagate ST15150W 4.3GB Ext. w/Starmax
    (used drive, noted problems)

You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database.

Video Card/System Benchmark Performance Database Updated:
Updates to the Mac Game/Video Card Performance database included:

  • Quake3 Retail (640x480) results from PowerBook G3 2000
(2 entries, both at 16bit mode, one entry with many game options off. Noted v1.0, not the current version.) It's too bad 16bit image quality is so poor on the Rage128 chips. I reviewed the PB G3/500 last spring including apps and game tests.

Total entries in the database to date: 2,342. If you haven't already, enter your results with any of the game titles or benchmarks listed on the entry page (details on how to test are there). If you're curious how a CPU upgrade or new Video card would help game performance, the search page options can help you find similar system/configurations to get an idea before you buy.

Rate Your Mac Games (Reader Reviews Database) Updated:
Today's Reader's Rate Their Mac Games database updates included reviews of Driver, Ceasar III and Unreal Tournament. Total reviews including all titles is 711. Since each review entry also notes system details like CPU type/speed, RAM and Video card type, these reviews are also good to see how well games play on various Mac models and video cards (important to know before you buy). If you've not already done so enter a game review.
