Radeon Driver v1.11 Feedback (Updated):
I've gotten a few reports so far on Radeon owner comments on using the new drivers posted today (see below for link). So far positive reports and one reader noted the Flash 4/5 problem was also fixed. (Note: See the Video topics page for the latest articles on drivers and Mac graphics cards.)

" Mike-
I am running a B&W (rev. 1)
G3/500MHz(OWC IBM chip)
576mb RAM
Dual Maxtor HD's
PCI Radeon (66 slot)
Rage Pro OEM (33 slot)

This update fixes all of my issues (so far). Elite Force works great now, as does Q3A. Able to run dual monitors now without any problems.

I'm one of the folks that is also having monitor-shuddering problems on a G4 DP 500/Rage [128 Pro I assume-Mike] w/ Trinitron setup. That Mac is at the office, so I will install the new driver there tomorrow and see if this helps the problem.
Mark "

" I am running a 533 with a Radeon (AGP) and a Rage Pro I had horrendous screen artifacting in Flash 4 and 5 (to the point of unusibility) on the monitor that was connected to the Radeon (and not the Rage) using the drivers that came with the 533. Switching to the Radeon 1.0 drivers did nothing, thankfully the Radeon 1.1.1 fixed this (comes with OpenGL 1.2.1 as well)

" Thanks but well my Xclaim Video Player still does not work when the Radeon AGP is the startup monitor (menubar location doesn't matter). "Cannot locate Video Digitizer"

When I make the Xclaim the startup monitor the Video Player works fine but then Quake3 is a jumble of triangles on my Radeon monitor.

At least my Mac2TV problems are fixed and I know this driver update is mostly for PCI Radeon cards. I guess I'm waiting for a new Universal Installer. The Xclaim specific software hasn't been updated since 9/99

" Hi Mike,
I just wanted to say that the ATI drivers look good so far. Problems with EF on Q3A screens loading screens being momentarily garbled appear to be gone.
I did some quick benchmarks with Q3A for anyone who might be interested if the driver update might improve game performance.

Here is my results of Q3A timedemos 1 & 2 with a fresh config file ( I posted benchmarks with the same setup using the ATI 1.0 drivers a few days ago.)

System Specs:
400 Mhz Sawtooth G4
256 MB
10 GB Maxtor OEM drive (startup drive & Q3A resides on)
20 GB WD drive
Radeon

timedemo 1 - 46.0fps

timedemo 2 - 43.9fps

No appreciable performance increase. I suppose any optimizations in the ATI drivers for the Radeon will have to wait until the next release. Also, there are no new menus or features in the ATI control panel for the Radeon. I'm not surprised since they didn't mention any of the MIA features like FSAA in the release notes. Lastly, OpenGL 1.2.1 is bundled with this driver update and installs with the drivers in the easy install. Mac users who have reported problems with 1.2.1 or don't want to upgrade to 1.2.1 should be careful to choose custom install.
Ryan L. "

I asked if he had the Radeon PCI or AGP model.

Get the updated drivers that should fix the PCI Radeon issues reported previously at support.ati .com/drivers/mac/macos9_radeon_111.html.
Radeon owners let me know if this solves your problems. Include your system and OS details. (PCI and AGP feedback welcome).

GeForce2MX Tip For Running Unreal Tournament Demo:
Dave Linder (author of the G4/533 w/GeForce2MX review here) noted he had problems running the Unreal Tournament demo on the GeForce, only being able to run software mode. I'm not sure the demo can run OpenGL mode, but I sent him some tips on changing the INI file to select Rave mode and set NonATI=True (non-ATI graphics card setting) and he reported it worked.

" Mike, it worked!
Here are the lines I modified in the .ini file that came with the demo version:

OLD Non-RAVE version:

[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=SoftDrv.SoftwareRenderDevice

[RaveDrv.RaveRenderDevice]
NonATI=False

NEW RAVE working version:

[Engine.Engine]
GameRenderDevice=RaveDrv.RaveRenderDevice

[RaveDrv.RaveRenderDevice]
NonATI=True

Thats it, well at 640x480 with 32 Bit color, the frame rate was about 47-50fps, but my does the water look nice!
See ya,
Dave "

Virtual PC 4.01 Update Reappears:
Althought the previous update was pulled, Connectix again as posted a download form page with the VPC 4.01 update. Not sure why the previous update was pulled or what's different with this version. Here's the changes noted in the readme:
  • Resolved a problem that resulted in an "object variable not set error".
  • Fixed an integer rounding bug in Microsoft Excel.
  • Incorporated fixes for Java JIT compilers.
  • Fixed an issue with Novell Netware login and connections using Shared IP.
  • The warning dialog for low Mac hard drive space now displays correctly.

Note: I had applied the previous release 4.01 update and the new updater would not apply over it. In fact, I thought the Mac was frozen since it took a long time for it to search the drive and report that there were no updates needed. [Note - some say the original updater was north american english only where the new updater in international.]
(Note: For later articles, performance tests, etc. on Virtual PC - see the Misc. Articles page, software section.)

Mac Doom Legacy Port Updated:
This just in from the author of the OpenGL conversion:

" I have released version 0.9 of Mac DooMLegacy. I would like to get lots of Mac users with different hardware configurations (especially voodoo + radeon cards) to test it and report any bugs to me so I can get version 1.0 out soon. It doesn't support tcp networking yet, but single player is 99.9% done.
If you could put this on your front page I'm sure I'd get a few people testing it :)

x3dfx.com VP Comments on Future Driver Updates:
As a followup to a news post here yesterday regarding x3dfx.com's VP mentioning a possible future driver update I received a reply from him noting that they only worked on PC drivers, and therefore any future updates (if they were to happen) would be PC only.
