Update to Oni Patch for OS X:
Dated Dec. 31st , Omnigroup has a v1.33 update to their patch for running Oni under OS X. The changes listed are:

  • Fixed texture rendering bugs on NVIDIA cards (causing black heads for Konoko, Strikers, etc.)
  • Correctly restore mouse speed on exit
  • Only capture the active displays, working around a system bug where inactive displays would be captured but never released on exit, preventing subsequent play until a reboot
  • Fixed most reported crashes
  • The physics reflection code no longer tries to call a callback which was never initialized
  • When an AI enters combat when it has no knowledge of a target, it will try to find a target rather than crashing (and if it can't find one it won't enter target)
  • Implemented guard functions to make the sound code thread-safe, fixing lots of crashes in the sound code

Get it at www.omnigroup.com/games/oni/.

More Apple Hints of New Products at MWSF:
Over the last few days Apple's web site front page has posted teasers about next week's Macworld SF expo announcements. (Today they're noting "Beyond the rumors sites. Way beyond".) Expectations are high - some think maybe too high (citing the iPod pre-announcement PR as an example) . Only time will tell, but I think (hope) that the announcements there will be well received.

Readers Meeting at Macworld SF:
I won't be able to attend the show, but some readers of the site have suggested everyone try to meet at OWC's booth at 2PM on the first day of the Expo. I don't know how many readers of this site will be there, but if you attend and would like to meet other xlr8yourmac.com readers, stop by OWC's Booth (# 2433) at 2PM on January 8th.
(Update - I just received word there's no way I can have site t-shirts made in time for the Expo...so the give-away shirt contest at MWSF is impossible.)

(OT) Nvidia Stock Best Performing in 2001 - Will MWSF Announcements Boost Apple Stock Prices?

Hindsight is always 20/20 and I don't have the funds to play the stock market, but Cnet reported recently that Nvidia was named top stock for 2001, seeing its shares more than quadruple, making it the year's best performer in the Standard & Poor's 500 index.
A forum post wonders if Apple's stock price will rise after the Macworld S.F. announcements based on expectations of new hardware and software to be unveilded there. Stock speculation can be risky however, especially with computer mfr. stocks.
