How to get the 60GB Travelstar notebook HD for under $380 (US Customers)
In reply to the post earlier today on the 60GB IBM Travelstar in a PB G4, a reader sent a note on how to get the drive for under $400 (at least for those in the USA)

" Hey Mike.
Good news: I noticed the post about the 60GB Travelstar today. I just wanted to let you know that I found that they are available in the US. I bought one yesterday and it arrived just as I was reading the post. I'm going to install it in my PBG4 today.

Even better news: I found it for a really good price - just in a slightly clever sort of way...
Dell's online store sells a "Hard Drive; 60GB IDE, Small Form Factor, for Dell Inspiron 8000/8100" for $499.00. It's actually the 60GB Travelstar drive in a special black metal plug-in housing for the Inspiron (remove four screws and go!)

Best news: it's "Dell Branded" which means that it's part of a 20% off sale. Add a $25 off coupon [use code DC6C3A014759] and the final price is $374.99! Overnight shipping is free. Go to their site and do a search for "5K841"

The main accessories page notes a 10% off deal currently, but the 20% off on Dell branded accessories for home users is apparently valid until 1/28/2002 according to a note I saw during the order process, although the expiration date was not noted on this page. (The 20% off was deducted when you checkout using their online store.)
Note: These drives may only be warrantied by Dell, not IBM. (Some OEM drives do not have the original mfr's standard warranty.)
*Update* A reader wrote in June 2002 that his 60GB drive he ordered from Dell on the above special failed, and had no warranty support by IBM (it was sold as a "Dell upgrade" for their notebooks). Since he didn't use it in a Dell computer, it apparently had only a 90 day warranty.

First report on HP DVD100i DVD+RW/CDRW Drive in a Mac:
(Update - I did not realize that the HP DVD100i did not support DVD-R discs. I realize DVD+RW and DVD-RW are different formats (the Superdrive Pioneer supports DVD-R/DVD-RW, but not DVD+RW), but thought the HP could write DVD-Rs as well as +RW discs. I checked HP's DVD100i specs page, which notes only write support for DVD+RW, CDR and CDRW media.)
There have been several reader emails asking if the $599 (list price) HP DVD100i drive is compatible with Macs (bootable, if it works with iDVD, Toast, etc.). One of today's Drive Database updates included this report on the drive:

HP dvd100i (12x10x32 + DVD 2.4x write, 8X read)
G4/AGP System running OS 9.2
" Drive writes CDs beautifully through Toast Titanium. Reads and plays DVD as well, but is incapable of writing DVDs through Toast, or any Apple software I've found. It is bootable if holding down the C key as well. Doesn't mount all professionally written CD-ROMs sucessfully.
Erik Brown "

Philips also makes a DVD/CDRW IDE drive (saw it at Best Buy a month or two ago), but can't remember if it supported DVD+RW only or DVD-R/DVD-RW. The Philips drive was rated a hair faster at DVD writing (2.5x I think), but no reports on that drive in a Mac yet. (If it supports only DVD+RW - no current mac software may work with it.)

First report on IBM Travelstar 60GB Notebook Drive in PB G4:
One of today's Drive Database entries included the first report I've seen on the 60GB IBM Travelstar 2.5" hard drive from a PowerBook G4 owner:

" MacOS X V. 10.1 [Noted OS X server]

IBM TravelStar 60GH works fine with the PB G4-500. Installation is a breeze as per instructions from this website. So far it's also noticably faster than the original 20GB Toshiba MK2016GAP although I haven't really experienced the "quietness" that I've read from the TravelStar 48GH upgraders. In fact when the disk is reading or writing it sounds like a crate of Coke glass bottles knocking against each other.

Cost-wise it ridiculously expensive in Japan (probably 'cos it's new) - Yen 73,000 + tax (approx US$561).
Sean Chan "

The fluid bearing drives are very quiet at idle, but all drives make some noise when the head is seeking, etc. - but I have never heard anyone refer to that noise as rattling bottles. [Update - see the later news post above on how USA customers can get the drive for under $400 with a limited time offer/discount.]
(The PB G4 HD install guide is linked on the IDE articles page, Systems page and FAQ.)

CarbonLib 1.5 Update Available:
Eli Block sent a note that CarbonLib 1.5 is available via OS 9 software updates. It's still not shown up on Apple's recent downloads page yet (as of 1:15AM Eastern Time, 1/3/02), so not sure what the changes are.

Photos of Possible New Apple Handheld Device?
[Note: the link below worked at appx 1:30 AM eastern time Thursday morning when I posted it, but the info was also at (from), but later the info/photos was removed there also.]
I saw photos posted of a similar device before the iPod was announced and have no idea if this is real or not - but Eli Block sent a link to a page with photos of an 'iWalk' device at The lower part of the page also has links to QT movies. (Before an Expo I get lots of mails about things like this - so by posting it here I'll save a lot of readers the time of sending mails with the same link at least. ;-)

SuperDrive 1.68 Firmware Update:
I've updated the previous page on how to flash an OEM Pioneer Superdrive (DVR-A03) to v1.55 firmware with info from a reader on flashing the drive to v1.68. It still requires a PC, but as noted previously the OEM Apple drives even when installed in PCs could not be updated with the standard Pioneer flash updaters. (Unfortunately the source files needed are from a site that has had the bandwidth allocations exceeded. Try copying and then pasting the URL into the browser address field - odd tip but some said that worked.)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
