160GB Maxtor Drive Fully Supported by Acard ATA/100 Card Update:

There have been news posts and database entries here previously about the >128GB IDE drives not being able to be fully utilized (even with multiple partitions) with either the onboard IDE (ATA/66 at best in current macs) or the ATA/66-ATA/100 PCI IDE Mac controller cards. Acard's ATA/133 firmware update (noted some time back here) for their ATA/100 card was expected to add support (fix the addressing limit) to fully support these drives, but this is the first (Mac) report I've had from a 160GB drive owner noting the full drive size was usable.
" Good news...
I got the Maxtor 160gb drive and ran into the problem posted here in which the drive only formatted to 128gb instead of the full 160gb. I bought the Acard 6280M from Other World Computing and installed it today. Out of the box the card did work without a hitch, but the drive still only formatted to 128gb. I went on to Acard's web site and found a 1.2 driver update (1.0 is the card's current bios version). The update for OS X is two .kext files that need to be replaced in the system (as root of course).

After the update, I ran Disk Utility and the drive now formats at 152.67[GB]!!!
So for anyone who want full compatability for large drives, Acard's 6280M will do the job with the updated drivers.
Brian Dayton"

Since Acard partnered with Maxtor on the ATA/133 card (noted in a press release earlier this year), I expected the larger drives would be supported, but good to get verification on that. I searched Acard's site and here is their page with Mac driver updates. It lists an OS X update for the 6820/6880 cards and 2.10 firmware updates for the 6280/6880 cards. (I asked Brian if he applied a firmware update and the OS X update, or just the OS X update. I also asked if the full drive size was usable in OS 9. (He later replied OS 9 sees the full size now - despite not flashing the card.)

Predictions of New Mac System Configurations for MWSF:
(removed since all of spy mac's predictions were wrong - no PDA, no new Towers, and wrong on the new iMac models screen size, CPU type, etc. - 15" LCD iMacs with G4/700 to 800mhz CPUs. 14" iBook model announced on the high end. See Apple's web site for the latest info.)

Quake3 1.31 beta2 Update for OS X:
A reader sent a note that ID's FTP site has a v1.31 beta update to Quake3 for OS X. (Server may be busy so keep trying.)
Note: A forum thread here noted a loss of the demo (and how to get it back) and comments on lower performance than v1.30. I've not tried 1.31b2 yet, but just a FYI....

DVD Studio Pro 1.2 Update adds support for Firewire DVD-R+DVD RAM drives, More:
Apple has posted a 1.2 update to DVD Studio Pro and notes the following changes:

" This free update to DVD Studio Pro 1.2 adds support for external Firewire drives that use the Panasonic combination DVD-RAM/DVD-R mechanism, such as the LaCie DVD-RAM/R drive. This updater also improves the output of DLT tapes that are sent for replication, particularly those that use copy protection technologies, such as Macrovision and CSS. "

Appearance Sounds Utility for OS X:
Although I disable them personally in OS 9 (old tip to prevent popping/noises in OS 9's DVD player), for those that miss Appearance Sounds in OS X, give's Xounds 1.0 ($7 shareware) a try. They note "Xounds will convert your existing MacOS 8 or 9 soundsets.... although not all event sounds are being played yet in this version of Xounds, we are working on bringing more of them for the future versions of this useful haxie".

Reader Notes FSAA Options in OS X Update to Red Faction:
[Note: The Red Faction 1.2 update (includes OS X compat.) is now available at this MacGamefiles page.]
" Mike,
I got a hold of the OS X update for Red Faction. Not that big of a deal until I noticed something in the intro screen. It was detecting that I had a Radeon and giving me the option for 2X and 4X FSAA. I took a few quick screen shots. One is 4X and one is FSAA off. I can't really see any difference so I'm not sure if it's really working or not. I can tell you that 4X did seem to slow things down some.
PS....The screen shots are attached. "

I examined Kevin's two 800x600 screenshots and didn't see any evidence of FSAA enabled. (Still saw fine jaggies on edges of objects). Perhaps this option is in preparation for a future driver update (the long-awaited driver update with FSAA support ). I suspect the Radeon 8500 will ship with FSAA enabled drivers, but only time will tell. (It's to be shown at Macworld SF next week.) Hopefully there will be a driver update with FSAA for the original Radeon card (reviewed here in Oct. 2000) also.

Status on BlueChip G4 CPU Upgrades for PB G3 Wallstreet and Lombards:
I wrote Powerlogix to ask what the status was of the Bluechip G4/500 upgrades for Wallstreet and Lombard PowerBooks.

"...the WS [wallstreet] boards are shipping, we sent some to OWC already with more coming in from our assembly house, the LS [lombard] boards are scheduled to be available in the next few days with most of the cards going to the MacWorld show.
Best Regards,

I've added "Powerlogix Bluechip G4" as an upgrade model to the Rate Your CPU Upgrade database and welcome reports from Bluechip G4 owners.

OS 9 iTunes Support file for LG 8160B (16/10/40) IDE CDRW drive:
Reader Phil Anderson sent an OS 9 modified support file for the LG 8160B (16/10/40 ) IDE CDRW drive. I've updated the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section to include this version along with the previously posted OS X support file. (I do not own this drive and have not tested these files - the are provided as-is with no warranty of any kind.)

Faster Toshiba Combo DVD/CDRW and Portable CDRW Drives:
" You may have seen this already, but if not, here's an upgrade to watch for: SD-R1202 and SR-C8102.

"Toshiba will begin shipping the SD-R1202 desktop combination drive [16x10x40x + 12x DVD] in mid-November and the SR-C8102 slim-line CD-R/RW drive [16x10x24x] in mid-December."
Don "

I don't know if these drives are shipping yet, but if anyone buys one post a drive database report. Hopefully the R1202 Combo drive will be as Mac compatible as the R1102 (8x8 + 8x DVD) model, which worked plug and play in my G4 tower in OS 9 and OS X. (Others noted it worked well also in drive database reports.)
