Red Faction and AvP Problems with SGI LCD Display in OS X
I'm hoping that someone has a suggestion for Bruce on the problems he's seeing trying to run Red Faction (v1.2) and Aliens vs. Predator (v1.01) in OS X 10.1.2 with his SGI 17.4" LCD display:

" Current setup
Dual G4 450 1Gb Ram ATI Rage Pro 128 AGP
SGI 1600sw 17.4 LCD with Multilink adapter
os x 10.1.2 and 9.2.1

Here's the scenario.
When running 9.2 I can select resolutions on the monitor ranging from 640x480 up to 1600x1200 all at 60hz.
I have had no problems running Red Faction or AVP gold.

Now on OS X 10.1.2 (running the latest patches for both games) I try to run the games, and as soon as they start I get an Out of range error on my monitor.
In the sys preferences, 640 x480 is no longer showing as valid. If I choose , show all , instead of recommended, 640x480 now becomes valid, but still only gives me an out of range error.
any ideas?
Bruce Modell"

I asked Bruce to check to see if there were any config/ini files for these games that could be modified to force a compatible refresh rate/mode for the display. However if any readers have a tip/suggestion for his problem send me an email. Thanks.

$49.97 Airport Cards:
Last week I noted a special here from OWC on $44.95 Airport cards, which sold out quickly. Today they wrote that they have gotten another shipment, but the price is now $49.97 (still about 1/2 the list price).

" We have acquired another shipment of the Airport cards and now have them in stock at $49.97.
Best Regards,
Larry O'Connor
Other World Computing, Inc. "

If you're at the MWSF Expo, stop by OWC's booth #2433/2435. They were supposed to have their iPod leather case on sale at the booth also I think.

Reader Reports on ATI Driver Update - Problems Noted:
[Note: Replacing the 1.08 ATI Rom Xtender extension with the previous 1.07 version solved the Q3 black screen issue I had with the G4/500DP and Sony FW900. The first reboot with the 1.07 extension hung the machine, but a reset worked. (The Cube w/LCD display and PB G4 didn't have this issue.) I've gotten more reader emails on this update, many noting problems.]
Several readers have written so far with reports on the ATI driver update noted earlier today (see my problem report below). I'd suggest making a copy of your existing ATI extensions/CP before the update if you have not applied it already)

" Hi Mike
I have a PCI Radeon running in my 8600/g3-500 and I have to say that I'm dissapointed in these drivers. The versions are the same as what was included with the MacOS 9.2.2 update. While I can't run that version of the OS, I did take the drivers from it, so for some time I've been using what ATI just released as 'new'. Here are the versions and dates:

ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator v6.3.5 (Nov 9, 2001, items below have this date)
ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator v6.3.5
ATI Resource Manager v3.0.5
OpenGLRendererATI v1.2.8
ATI Extension v2.8.4 (Nov 28, 2001)
ATI Graphics Accelerator v5.5.1
ATI Mac2TV Monitor v2.8.3
ATI 3D Accelerator v5.0.4 (July 27, 2001)
ATI Video Accelerator v4.8.5 (Sept 24, 2001)
ATI ROM Xtender v1.0.8 (Dec 14, 2001)

If old drivers weren't enough, to top it off now when I reboot I get about 15 seconds added onto my startup time when the radeon shuts off my main monitor for no apparent reason, just like it's going to sleep except that my second monitor is still on. Everything just stops, no hard drive activity. The first time I thought it might be doing a ROM update, but later reboots just confirmed that it was a delay. Nice bug, good thing I leave my system running all the time and don't usually have to reboot...

So whatever happened to the ATI performance driver release? What about the ROM update for the cards effected by the bug introduced with the last update (flickering text in internet explorer, etc when in MacOS X)? Is Arshad still there? I think a lot of people would like an update on those questions.

So there you have it. Thanks for the great site and keep up the good work!
CS "

" I have a Radeon AGP card.
The ATI menu (the menu that appears in the upper right hand area of the main menu bar) has a new option "Adaptive De-Interlacing for DVD". [Noted in my previous post below-Mike] I just tried using it with the Apple DVD player 2.7, and it does appear to change the video, although I really did not see a big difference in image quality (could of been the dvd I was using, a X-Files season 3 episode).

I have been looking high and low for the FSAA, can't find it. However, t he ATI apple guide lists Antialiasing as a index topic, and the ATI help (though the Mac Help Center) says the following in the about - the ATI Displays control panel:
3D Full Screen Antialiasing - provides better smoothing of 3D graphic edges.

And under Troubleshooting - can't select certain features it says:
3D Full Screen Antialiasing (FSAA) is only available with the ATI RADEON.

It seems it imply that there should be a option in the ATI Displays control panel for FSAA, but I can't find it anywhere in the control panel?
-Joshua D. Orr- "

The Red Faction 1.2 Update was noted by a Radeon owner last week as having an FSAA option in OS X, but not sure it does for the OS 9 version. If anyone ties RF 1.2 in OS 9 with the ATI driver update let me know if you see a FSAA option. (I don't have the game yet to try.)

" Hi Mike!
Graphite Apple Studio Display 17"
Mac OS 9.2.2
I had serious problems with the ATI Driver Update. The monitor went to sleep mode during startup as the ATI-files was loading. I tried to zap the pram, tried to restart the machine pressing shift in order to boot with extensions off. That didnĖt help much either, the same problem ocurred. At the next startup I pressed the spacebar and thus activating extensions manager. I managed to startup with the basic Mac OS profile and I threw away all ATI files and installed an older version. Works fine again. I donĖt think IĖll go for another try...
Allt the best:
J. Wallgren. "

The G4 Cube w/Radeon AGP OEM and the PB G4/667 seems OK so far but I've on done much more than test for the Quake3 1.30 issue I saw with the update on the DP500 w/AGP Radeon retail card I noted earlier today.

Notes and Problems with ATI's Radeon/Rage128 Update:
I applied the ATI driver update noted below have seen a problem with running Quake3 on a Sony FW900 with a retail Radeon AGP card in a Dual G4/500 after the update. When I launch Quake3 v1.30 after the update, the screen goes black on the FW900, indicating the refesh rate is out of range for the monitor. (29Hz???) This was not a problem before the driver update. I checked the Monitors control panel and it shows a refesh rate of 75Hz as before - but Quake 3 will not run as OpenGL mode apparently tries to set a very low refresh rate after the update. Trashing the Quake3 config file and then running Q3 again did not help (still shown as 29Hz refresh rate in the FW900's internal diagnostics, same black screen seen.) I have to hit the reset button to reboot the Mac after trying to run Quake3.

The update ran Quake3 fine on my Cube running an Apple Cinema Display LCD however. (And on a PB G4 which also has an LCD display.) No performance gain was seen with the update in OS 9.2.2 w/Quake3 with the Dual G4/500 Cube w/OEM Radeon in Quake 3 1.30 when tested at 640x480/32bit/HQ and 1024x768/32bit/HQ settings. [Update: Replacing the 1.08 ATI Rom Xtender extension with the previous 1.07 version solved the Q3 black screen issue I had with the G4/500DP and Sony FW900. The first reboot with the 1.07 extension hung the machine, but after pressing reset it booted and now runs Q3 OK.]

*Note:*: The update installs the ATI extension which adds the ATI icon near the menu bar apps switcher. As with previous updates, only the retail ATI cards can use the ATI display control panel. The ATI menu offers an option for "Adaptive Deinterlacing for DVD " playback. I've not yet tested to see if this works with OEM cards as well as retail cards. (I'm playing the Matrix DVD on the Cube with OEM Radeon card and it seems to be working, but it's too early to tell.)

January 7, 2002 ATI Retail Radeon/Rage128 Driver Update for Mac OS 9.x
(Note: See the later news items above for problem reports and issues with the ROM Xtender extension, so backup your current version before installing just in case.)

I'm hoping this is the Radeon Update that adds FSAA support for games that have that option. Get it at

    " Requirements:
    * Mac OS 9.x
    * QuickTime 5.0 or higher
    * OpenGL 1.2.2 (required for 3D graphics)

    * RAGE 128 Mac products such as
    * NEXUS 128
    * XCLAIM VR 128

    * Filename: OS9_RADEON_020107.HQX
    * File Size: 3.09 MB
    * Posted: 01/07/2002
    * Release Notes
    This driver version was written and enhanced for Mac OS 9.x - It is NOT supported under Mac OS 8.6.

    This driver requires OpenGL version 1.2.2 or higher for 3D graphics support. At present this version of OpenGL is only available in Mac OS 9.2.1 or higher.

    3D graphics are not supported with this driver when using older versions of OpenGL.

    This driver package does NOT include QuickTime. QuickTime 5.0 or higher is required for correct operation. "

The readme file seems to imply adaptive de-interlacing for DVD playback in OS 9. (This is an option now in the ATI menu option adjacent to the Finder's OS 9 Menu bar apps switcher.) I welcome Feedback from Radeon and other ATI card owners on this driver update for OS 9.

OS X Quake3 1.31 Beta 3 Available:
Last week ID posted a 1.31 beta2 update for OS X Quake3, and this weekend a beta 3 update appeared at their (The beta 3 direct download link is here, but it may be best to check the FTP site to see if any later versions appear. If you're having problems connecting to ID's site, try this mirror of the beta3 update.)
Readers in the forums noted that the drop in framerates seen with previous 1.31 betas seem to be solved with beta3, but some still report less servers listed and one reader noted beta3 doesn't have stereo sound on his system. This forum thread on 1.31beta has those comments and a reader link to a demo for those that lost it with the 1.31 beta updates.

Positive Feedback on OS X Epson 1.0 Driver Update:
Saturday's news listed the new (but noted as 1.0) printer driver updates available via OS X's Software Updates. (Canon, Epson and HP driver updates were listed.) An Epson owner noted the update solved a problem he had.

"On your mainpage you ask whether the recently released printer drivers are new. They have solved one big problem I was having. I could not print directly from X if classic was running (I had to stop the queue and restart it to get it to print.) Now that I have installed the "newer" drivers I find that I can print properly even if classic is running. There was no change in the version number of the Epson Printer Utility (still 1.10)
system: 10.1.2 (9.2.1 classic) on G4/450 AGP with 512MB RAM
hope this helps
Neil Armstrong"

I asked Neil what Epson printer he is using. Another reader replied to this post saying he also had a problem solved by the update:

" Mike,
The new update fixed my OS X printer problems!
Before, I had to keep cycling the power on my Epson Stylus Photo 780 every time I wanted to print something. I think the problem only occurred when Classic was running, but I almost always have Classic running. Anyway it seems to be completely cured of this behavior now.
Seems like a very poor practice to update software without changing the revision level, but it works so I'm not complaining.
Best Regards,
Tony Pierry "

My HP contact replied to my email saying he's not had a chance to test these as he's on travel to MWSF, but impled the HP 1.2 driver update at their site might be a later version (for printers supported by their 1.2 driver update for OS X.)

More Notes on OS X Backup Software/FWB update resolving Restore Issue:
Saturday's news had a reader's tips/guide to backing up OS X volumes using standard Apple utilities and a negative comment on restoring backups using FWB backup for OS X. A reader sent a note about the latest update to FWB backup for OS X solving a previous issue:

" Hi, Mike- While I haven't tried it myself, FWB says that the latest version of Backup Toolkit/Tri-Backup DOES let you do a complete OS X restore from a backup. Take a look at this page:

    Q. I am going to backup my Mac OS X volume, can BackUp ToolKit backup and restore a bootable Mac OS X volume?

    A. Yes! Version 3.0.4r1 can copy or restore a complete Mac OS X volume. To copy, backup, or restore a Mac OS X volume, you need to run BackUp ToolKit under Mac OS X, and have full permissions for all files.

Sorry to hear you won't be at Macworld....Keep your eyes peeled for some cool stuff from us. -John Fu
Asst. Product Manager
Retail Product Marketing
Maxtor Corp."

I've added John's comments to the page of Feedback on FWB's Backup Toolkit for OS X. (Note several readers have said this software is basically Tri-Backup developed by another company.)

Comments on recent OS X HP Driver Update 1.0:

A reader commented on the HP driver update listed in OS X's Software updates recently:

" Hi Mike,
I think the HP drivers available from the Apple software update have been available since December from the HP web site. These drivers fixed a couple of issues like the ability to select the paper type which allows to print at the highest quality (photo paper), improved the speed dramatically (on my 990CM) but introduced something really annoying.

With the previous drivers (installed by default with OSX), it was possible to print on almost any existing paper formats like A4, A5, B5, A6, Hagaki (Japanese postcard), legal US, etc.

With the current drivers, the paper formats that are available are the ones that are used in the country (or language setting) that is used during the installation. I confirmed after I couldn't access the Hagaki format after installing the new drivers. At that time I performed the installation with the language setting set to English in the international control panel. I then downloaded the drivers from HP web site (1.2 version) and did the installation again this time after switching the language to Japanese. In that case, the Hagaki format and ISO ones like A4, B5 became available. The remaining problem is the missing A6 format (different but similar in size to the 4x6 Us format). I wish HP will address this issue. They seemed to forget that there are people who use other languages than the language of the country set in the international control panel to run MacOS X. The drivers should not be bound to this setting, otherwise, it would be impossible to print in ISO formats if running English-US MacOS X when you need to. They should also give the user the ability to create paper formats like it is possible with the MacOS 9 current HP drivers.

If you get a chance, can you ask your contact at HP if they are aware of this issue?
I wish you and Kay a healthy happy new year,

I forwarded these comments to my HP contact, but he's at MWSF now and may not reply until after the Expo. (He's returning on the 14th he said.)

You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
