| USB to Wireless Networking Adapter (MacOS 9 only Drivers) |
Last night's Software Updates listing from Barney included this link to Skyline 11Mb Wireless USB Adapter (474) Mac OS 9 Installer. The product page for device is here. There's no OS X drivers but for Macs like the iMac 233-333mhz models (w/no Airport card slot) this looks attractive. (I'd like to try one with my rev A iMac with G4/433MHz CPU upgrade and Voodoo2 card.) Not sure how well it would work with USB PCI Cards in older Macs. There's a Skyline PCI wireless adapter card (and PCI card/Wireless PCcard bundle) for Macs that have a PCI slot, but I remember last year there were some notes about issues with certain Mac models. Here's what they list on their product page for the Wireless PCI adapter:
System Requirements:
Macintosh: Power Macs with PCI slots, including G3 or G4 running MacOS 7.6.1 or higher. See below for exceptions:
The following systems will fail with no video output symptom if a Skyline Wireless PCI Card is installed:
- G3 beige desktop/300, Machine ID: 510, ROM $77D.45F2
- G3 beige tower/300, Machine ID: 510, ROM $77D.45F2
- G3 beige tower/333, Machine ID: 510, ROM $77D.45F2
- G3 beige desktop/266, Machine ID: 510, ROM $77D.45F2
- Blue and White G3, Machine ID: 406, ROM 77D.44F1
(If you think you have one of above systems, you can find out for sure by running the Apple System Profiler utility software and by looking at the 'Machine ID' and
'ROM revision.' If both the Machine ID and ROM revisions match, then you have one of these systems and the Wireless PCI card will not work in these machines)
Some readers have noted in the past they've used the Skyline cards in pre-G3 series older Macs.

| CDRW/CD/DVD/Hard Drive Compatibility Database Updates |
The Drive Compatibility searchable database had 16 new reports added today (from yesterday's entries). The database includes reports on Combo DVD-CDRW, CDROMs, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, CDRW, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, Firewire, SCSI, adapters). Current total 6,172 reports. [Entries from after midnight are added the following newsday morning.]
(Note - ** Please include your CD/CDRW Drive Speed in the entry **. And please do not post questions in the database, use email for that and check the database and articles here for answers/tips/guides first. Incomplete entries, those with no comments, name, contact info, etc. are deleted.)
Smartmedia Card Readers
- USB Olympus (reader w/C2100 camera) used w/5500 and USB card (OS 8.6)
(problems noted, perhaps due to Combo FW/USB card. Sonnet notes you have to install a Nvram patch for 55/6500 macs to use their FW/USB card.)
Multimedia Card Readers
- USB Maxcell UA-5 used w/B&W G3 (OS X)
(listed under "other" brands)
Combo DVD-CDR Drive Reports
- LG GCC-4120B 12x8x32 + 8x DVD in B&W G3 (OS X)

- Ricoh MP9200a (20x10x40x + 12x DVD ROM) in Dual G4 (OS X)
(commented on a fix to allow burning in the Finder - using El Gatos SCSI CDRW helper. Odd that would help with a IDE drive but it has with many SCSI CDRW drives as noted here since Oct/Nov. 2001.)
DVD-ROM Drive Reports
- IDE Panasonic SR-8586-C 16x/48x in G4/AGP (OS X)
Firewire CDRW Drive Reports

(used installation guide here)
- IBM Travelstar 60GB in PowerBook G3 2000 (OS X)
- IBM Travelstar 60GB in PowerBook G4 (OS X)
(see install guide here)
- Maxtor 80GB in iMac slot loading (OS 9.2)
- Western Digital 100GB (8MB cache) in Dual G4 (OS X)
SCSI Hard Drive Reports
- Seagate ST32550W (SCA) in 73/75/7600 (OS 9.1)
(problems noted - didn't mention specific mac model)
You can find full owner reports by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
