Reader Feedback on OS X 10.2.3 and HP Communications Mgr (updated)
(Updated: - see additional reader comments below this original news posting.)
10.2.3's kbase doc noted that this update should address the issue reported here (and elsewhere) in the past regarding the HP communications driver CPU usage (hogging) many had noted before. I've not seen a lot of mail on this issue since 10.2.3 was released, but I'm so far behind I could have missed it if the email had a generic subject line. A recent reader email however noted he's still seeing the problem in 10.2.3.
"Mike,
I've heard reports that 10.2.3 resolves compatibility issues with HP
Communications Manager. Apple also mentions this with version release notes.
This is not my experience with G4 867 Quicksilver, HP 5500c scanner, and HP990cxi printer.
Process Viewer still shows periodic readings of 50-80% CPU time for this application running in background.
Warcraft 111 unplayable after computers been running for 2 or 3 hours!
Also, there seems very little feedback/information with respect to Jaguar compatibility with Scansoft Omnipage Pro X, does anyone one else use it?
(a reader sent comments on this which I'll post in a later news update-Mike)
Peter"
Here's other mails today on the HP driver issue in reply to Peter's comments:
"
I saw the news item regarding this and went and checked process viewer
and saw it using periodically up to 60%. So I have now removed the
software. I saw some slow down but did not attribute it to this until
your news item.
Lonnie R.
(I asked for more info on the HP device, etc.)
HP 3330 printer, scanner, copier, fax. I installed the HP JETDIRECT
310X EXT PRINT Server and was connecting to the device using ethernet.
OS X 10.2.3 build 6G30
"
Here's another reply:
"
I also own a Scanjet 5500 and have experienced the same problem. I reported
this on the same day that X.2.3 came out.
Joel H.
"
With over 1000 emails at least since 10.2.3 was released, plus the holidays, I must have missed his mail or forgotten it... (I can't keep up with all mails, it's impossible.) Another reader with a Photosmart printer said he's not seeing the problem:
"
Mike,
I have a G4 867 Single with 1.5GB of ram 174GB of HD and a HP
Photosmart 1215 printer using the ( I believe) latest HP driver set
2.05. I have none of the problems from before 10.2.3 with the huge CPU
usage now it uses about 4-7% of the cpu every 6-8 seconds ( which I
tend to think is still out of line but the machine is useable) My
up-times have been over 2 weeks with no problems
Just thought I would let you know !!!
Kade
"
Note: For those that missed the last two news items on this issue (w/10.2.2 originally) with some tips/notes that might be of interest - see:
Also if anyone else with an AIO or other HP printer that uses the comm driver (not all HP printers do) let me know if you've seen this issue fixed or not in 10.2.3. (Include your system/OS/Printer/driver details in reports.)

Another Tip on Editing CDRW Support Files in OS X (using the Terminal)
I've updated the original page on Tips for Discburner/Itunes CDRW Support to include a reader's notes on using the Terminal in OS X to edit/modify a drive's device-plugin file for an unsupported drive. (Past info there covered using Hexedit, Resedit, etc. to modify these files. This is how all the modified support files in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section were edited - check there first to see if there's already a file for your drive.) If your drive "brand" doesn't have an existing device-plugin file, you can try cloning a similar "brand's" plugin file and then editing it to include the reported (by ASP) drive model number and rename the file with the brand of your drive. (This is how the Memorex 48Maxx plugin in the FAQ was done - the drive was a firmware ID modified Lite-On 48X model sold by Memorex.)

VirtualPC 6 Problems in OS X with G3 CPU Macs? (updated w/iBook owner report)
Update - two iBook owners replied to this post, one saying he's running VPC6 in OS X/fullscreen without any problems, the other (later report) noted a major problem:
"
i have an ibook 16mb vram and g3 700mhz, i installed on virtualpc6
windows2000 professional without any problem but when it finished the
installation and i tried to use windows, vpc unexpectedly closed. when
i reopen it closed again and the ibook didn't responded anymore to any
of my commands, i have had to reboot! i make you notice that i never
used full-screen visual but just screen in a window. i use macosx
10.2.3 and 384mb of ram.
i'll try to reinstall virtualpc 5 and boot from the same diskimage, i
don't have enough time now.
Franzo
"
The earlier iBook owner report follows:
"
Hi, i read the article (news item) on VPC6 crashing on G3s. I have a iBook G3 32MB VRAM Model running OS X Server 10.2.3 and VPC 6 (WinXP) and havent had any issues. Airport works fine when connecting to a Linksys WAP11. Havent tried wireless with anything else. Full screen works fine. Maybe the problem is coming from people upgrading. When i got it, i reinstalled the Host OS and Guest OS.
Matt B.
"
(Previous post follows)
A reader recently noted in a forum post that there's a problem with VPC6 in OS X (running full-screen mode) if run on a Mac with a G3 CPU.
"Okay, they don't tell you this ANYWHERE except in the discussion forums, and even then, you have to dig, but VPC6 has major crash trouble with G3 machines that run OSX, even if they are running 10.2.3 (the recomended OS).
It won't run in full screen mode correctly, and if you accidentally try to run it in full screen, you can fuxor your Guest OS images or even your OSX install. Worse, from then on, VPC will crash on launch or when trying to open a virtual machine, with no way to get it back up. There are also issues with airport, certain networking, and others, but all seem to affect G3 only.
I can attest to this, as I tried to run VPC6 on my iBook and blammo. But it didn't screw up my OSX, and I was able to run VPC 5 again after de-upgrading the disk images (you need to unpackage them since VPC6 packages them up as it upgrades them from V4 or V5 format, but it is pretty easy to undo).
Connectix is working on a fix, but since this affects just about EVERY G3 machine out there, it is bothersome to me that they could have released 6 without testing such an OBVIOUS setup. (When I say G3 machines, I mean ANY machine that runs a G3 processor, not just machines Apple called G3. Probably obvious, but just making sure.)
It does work great on my G4 with 7500 graphics, so much faster, and with full cinema resolutions even in Windows 95.
So, if you have a G4, get the new version, it's worth it, but if you have a G3 and run OSX, hold onto V5 until they fix this, which they claim to be doing as fast as possible.
Mike K."
Another reader replied to the post saying that he had run VPC6 ok in OS 9.

Reminder on Tip for G4 Upgraded Beige G3s to boot back to OS X
| (from a reader email in reply to a recent CPU upgrade database report)
"
Jet Blue: I read your review of your (Powerlogix) G4 upgrade on beige G3. (in the database here) I recently
upgraded similarly and encounter the same problems. I found a way to reliably boot back in to OS X.
Try 'system disk 2.6.2', available here (direct D/L link)
It solved the problem for me. Run the app, select your OS X disk,
click save, and restart. Presto Chango...
Troy Routley
"
This utility has been noted in some older G4 upgrade/Beige G3 reports but since there are so many it's often not seen. Another reader sent a mail that XLR8's Startupdisk maker also helped:
"
Hi Mike,
I read the news item about using System Disk 2.6.2 to solve the problem
booting into OS X on G4 upgraded Beige G3 Macs. I Just wanted to let you
know that the XLR8 StartupDiskMaker also fixes the problem booting into
OS X (at least on my OWC G4/533 upgraded Beige G3 Mac).
Best regards
Anders N.
"
But is there any source for that now that xlr8.com shut their doors? (OWC has mirrors of newer tech, etc. software but not xlr8 last I checked, but I have not checked there recently)
