| Mac Build of Strike Force 1.80 Mod for Unreal Tournament |
| There's now a Mac download of the Strike Force v1.80 mod (a total conversion literally) for Unreal Tournament. The download is over 370MB however and I've not gotten it yet. (Clip from the page there)
Strike force 1.80 Mac Build
Haroun completed the Mac build, more mirrors will come shortly.
For more info about the mod, see their About Strike Force page and sidebar links but here's their general description.
About Strike Force - A Hardcore Mod for Unreal Tournament
Strike Force is a modification for Unreal Tournamnet. This means you have to have the full UT game in order to run our FREE mod. Strike Force brings a real world tactical sim to the UT engine. Strike Force puts terrorist against counter terrorist in real world environments. Strike Force has four varied game types, each with its own objectives. You can rescue hostages,
escape from the enemy, work as a team in TDM or play fast and frantic DM. Each character is specialized with his own weapon, health, speed and accuracy. You will also find that each team has its own weapons."
There's bot support for those who would like to practice before going online. Earlier this year I had posted links to previous versions, but the strike force center URL for the mac installers back then doesn't work now.

| Cnet story on possible Fees for future iMovie/iDVD/iPhoto Updates |
| Here's a clip from the Cnet article today:
"
Apple Computer next week will announce a plan to charge for
upgrades to some of the company's highly acclaimed "digital hub"
software, a move that could anger customers accustomed to
receiving free updates.... Apple is expected to announce at the Macworld Expo in San Francisco Tuesday that consumers will have to pay for new versions of iDVD, iPhoto and iMovie, which will be sold together as a bundle
"
Maybe it's just rumor-mongering, but time will tell. After the .mac cost/no Jag upgrade discount announcements at MWNY last summer, I really wince at the response that any more fee based items (that were free) will bring. Maybe they're wrong about this...
But if true, my question is how much it will cost and what improvements (new features/capabilities, etc.) will be included in future updates. I'd gladly pay $50 for a version of iDVD that had external DVD recorder drive support for example. BTW - A reader sent a reminder than iMovie2 wasn't free either ($49.xx unless you bought a new Mac, or OS X) and I remember that shortly after the iMovie2 release, the free (OS 9) iMovie1 download was removed as well. (iDVD2 also cost $19.xx for those that didn't get it with a new Mac or buy OS X.) Maybe this will be a repeat of that - where there's a charge for the next major release (iMovie3, iDVD3?) for existing users . I guess we'll know for sure next week at MWSF.

| Reader Suggestion on iSync/iCal Problems |
| (Update: The first replies to this post noted the device time zone was not a factor, including owners of a Palm and Treo noting they had problems with double entries, etc. even though their devices had correct time zone settings.)
I don't know if this is a factor on the iCal/iSync problems readers have reported, but one reader suggested that perhaps the time zone of a sync'd device may be a factor. (My older Palm M100 for instance doesn't have a time zone option, only date/time/country, although later models and other devices may have one.)
"
Hey Mike,
I think a lot of the readers that are having problems with doubling of
events, or moving of events on their Palm or other mobile devices after using the new versions of iSync and iCal have not set their time zones correctly. (for the device) I had this problem on my T68i and once I reset the time zone everything synced perfectly.
Shawn
(he later wrote)
Yes, I believe at least some of the problem has to do with the time
zone being correctly set on the device itself. Since the time zone is
set on the mac, it must also be set correctly on the device in order
for the appointments to be displayed correctly. As far as Palm
devices, I know that on the newer Palm devices there is a time zone
option under the preferences > time and date.
"
If anyone that had a problem can verify this was a cause, let me know.

| Another G3 Mac problem report with VPC 6/OS X (updated w/Connectix Comments) |
(Update - see below for comments from my Connectix contact)
Yesterday's news had a report of VPC 6/OS X problems with G3 Macs, but with a later update from an iBook (G3 of course) owner noting no problems running VPC 6 in OS X. Today I received another iBook owner report that did note a problem with Virtual PC 6 under OS X:"
i have an ibook 16mb vram and g3 700mhz, i installed on virtualpc6
windows2000 professional without any problem but when it finished the
installation and i tried to use windows, vpc unexpectedly closed. when
i reopen it closed again and the ibook didn't responded anymore to any
of my commands, i have had to reboot! i make you notice that i never
used full-screen visual but just screen in a window. i use macosx
10.2.3 and 384mb of ram.
i'll try to reinstall virtualpc 5 and boot from the same diskimage, i
don't have enough time now.
Franzo
"
The first reader report on the problem impled that tech support knew this was an issue that would be fixed in an update, but I've written a contact at Connectix to get her take on this - here's her reply:
"
Hi Mike,
Thanks for contacting me. We have been able to track down a problem where
Virtual PC may unexpectedly quit when being restarted while in full screen
mode. The problem seems to only exist for users running Virtual PC 6 on a
G3.
We plan to have a fix for this by the end of the month. (We'll post the free
Virtual PC 6.0.1 updater on our web site as soon as it is available.) As a
temporary workaround users should be in windowed mode before restarting or
shutting down their PC.
Please let me know if you need additional information or if there are
additional reports of problems we should look into.
Best regards,
Teresa
"
I've forwarded her the reader email (iBook owner above) that noted a problem w/o running full-screen mode. (Not all iBook owners had VPC6 problems however - is there any universal truths to OS X problems? After the last year I wonder...)

| Readers Report Problems with iCal 1.01 Update |
| I've gotten several emails from readers noting problems with the iCal 1.01 update noted in yesterday's news. Here's a sample of some of the emails I've read so far:
"
Confirming another Hawaii user found the calendar times moved to the
previous day, but not at the right time, when using iSync with a Palm.
What a nightmare.
Bruce L.
"
I asked Bruce if his Palm had any timezone settings (my M100 doesn't). A reader mail (see above) indicated that device timezone settings may be a factor but I don't know if that's true of all those that had a problem like this.
"
Aloha Mike,
Just FYI, the iCal update is having major problems in Hawaii Standard time. It moves all the dates around and shows the date as December 3 instead of January 3. I had to reinstall the original iCal to get it back to normal.
Rick
"
"
Not sure if anyone would have pointed this out yet - but the iCal 1.0.1
update is terrible. It messes up all the times and dates of previous
appointments. Each time you restart iCal it messes them up even more.
If people are going to install the update, they probably should make a
backup of ~/Library/Calendars/ first.
Lots of people on the Apple discussion boards are reporting this.
Matt.
"
"
Definite problem with iCal 1.01 and non-Continental US
time zone. I live in Hawaii (poor me ;0) and iCal displays
"today" in the Month display as 3 December 2002
and all the events are skewed back a day. Switch to California
time zone in the System Preferences, refresh subscribed US
Holidays calendar, and everything is fine. I have seen reports
from someone else in Hawaii and another in Australia that have
seen the same problem. My date and time are correct and network
synced to time.apple.com. I even attempted a fresh install, deleting
all preferences, Calendars folder, iCal application, and iCal.pkg
receipt. I also updated to iSync 1.0 to start as well and after I
reinstalled iCal 1.0 with iSync 1.0 installed, the iCal application
crashes on startup. So it looks like you need both. -P.
"
There's also a forum thread here that noted some problems as well such as this one.
"
Installed and a lot of problems now...
First I used the iSync uninstall(to remove the beta), then installed iCal
1.01 after that iSync 1.0 and iSync palm afterward.
Everything looked fine until I sync!!!
Problems after the first sync:
Everything in my iCal as well as my Palm "date book" were doubled past and future events...
More than half of my email addresses in my AddressBook (Mac) moved from"home" to "work"

| OS X 10.2/iTunes3 Support file for Philips PCRW4816 48x16x48x CDRW Drive |
Vincenzo Epifani sent a modified Philips plugin file edited for the Philips PCRW4816 (48x16x48x) drive he's using in a OWC Firewire case. (I've added this info to the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section for future reference.) NOTE: As with all modified files - these are provided "as-is" with no warranty or support. This file replaces the existing Philips file of the same name (use Sherlock to find the locations of the original file (long path) - and to avoid permissions issues in OS X you may want to boot into OS 9 to replace the OS X file, or use the terminal as root. Although an option is to get info on the plugin file and temporarily change permissions. Some have noted booting to OS 9 to replace the file worked best however.)

| Reader Comments on Mac to PC Firewire Networking |
| (He didn't mention what software was used, but I assume Apple's Firewire Networking Dev. release, not the FireNet software from Unibrain.)
"
i've discovered one important thing to keep in mind when hooking up
your mac and pc.
when you reboot either machine, it's a good idea to sever the
connection between them (and possibly reboot them both at the same time). here's why:
for whatever reason, my mac and pc fight it out on bootup over who
controls what device. for instance, my setup looks like this:
mac - fw chain 1 - cdrw - 120 gig hd - scanner
pc - fw chain 1 - cdrw
chain 2 on both is the connection between them (they're wired
directly together).
for the past few weeks, it's been a comedy of errors at my house.
i'd fire up nero on my pc, and the cd drawer on my mac's desk would
open up. i'd try to write to the 120 gig drive, but couldn't mount
it (the pc had it open over there with a "?" over the drive).
actually, i blame all of that for my having to reformat it this
morning (insert a cavalcade of curse words here).
it got to the point where my mac was controlling all of the firewire
devices, except the scanner - which xp decided to grab (note that
it's at the end of the chain on the mac... weird). a few days later,
my mac had the pc cdrw, while the pc had the mac's. grrr.
anyway, now i reboot both of them at the same time when needed - and
sever the connection (unplug the cable) until i've logged into both
machines. in that way, my devices keep their affinity to the correct
machine. this feels like scsi on crack.
however, 400 b/s is worth every bit of hassle...
best,
-t
