Quicktime 6.1 Update
(Update: There were several problem reports due to the QT 6.1 update, including problems with games like F1 Championship, Black & White and Creature Isle. See Friday's news page for details and how to contact the game developers for a patch.)

It's available via Software Updates in 10.2/Jaguar. (I later checked on a 10.1.5 system and it showed there also.) I'm not sure if the Apple Quicktime download page has the new version yet or not, but here's the changes noted in the SU panel for QT 6.1:

" QuickTime 6.1 delivers a number of quality and performance enhancements for audio, video, and full screen playback.

Enhancements include the following:

  • MPEG-4 video provides more accurate rate control and improved visual quality.
  • AAC includes new encoder controls and new bit rate options.
  • DV includes significant encode and decode performance improvements.
  • QuickTime Pro users will enjoy enhancements in full screen playback, including newly enabled keyboard shortcuts for movie control, faster entry and exit, and improved playback performance.
  • Thanks to Eli Block and Jeff Butler for the heads up.

    Notes/Warnings/Tips on Safari Problems
(Update - the Friday news page noted there's an updated Safari version now that may fix the bugs below - latest version is at Apple's safari download page.)

When I first downloaded and ran Safari on Tuesday, the preferences window would not display correctly (showing an almost blank window with just text names for the categories). I ran repair permissions from Disk Utility, then tried again and it was OK. Another reader today said he could not Print after using Safari and that Repair Permissions also solved that problem.
The most common problem that several readers have reported is Option-clicking on a link to download it replaced the user's home directory (folder) - see this Apple forum thread. There's another Apple forum thread on printing/deleting of /tmp problems. (I can't remember option-clicking on links in Safari and will avoid it - but I can still print OK. Repair Permissions solved the only problem I've seen with it so far.)

Comments/Photos from the Expo on the new PowerBooks
I asked Jamie Dresser (the only person I have contact with at the show) what he thought of the new 12" and 17" PowerBook G4s. Here's his reply from yesterday:

" The new PBs are very nice, the keyboard is without a doubt the best I have seen / felt. They are not that bulky, surprisingly. I think the 17" is overkill if you run 2 monitors like I do already; but I would not kick it off my desk if it appeared.

The 12" is a marvel. I have already seen numerous people that are going to get one because they want the ultimate in portability and this is certainly it. It is a 5# wonder that's for sure.
(10.2.4 6J11 is installed on the new Powerbooks)
You want pics, we'll have them on our site today. (this page has some photos of the 12 and 17 inch PowerBook G4s-Mike)
ps check out the expo webcam yet on our site?
    OWC "

Some readers have wondered if the 15" model will be phased out. It's just a guess, but I think some may feel the 12" is too small and the 17" too large - so there may be a market for the 15" model, although I'd also guess eventually it will have features like FW800, alum. case, etc. of the 2003 models. (Only Apple knows for sure what will happen however.)

    Airport Extreme PCCard
(from a reader email yesterday - I spent most of the day working on macs so just trying to catch up with news)

" well - it seems there is Airport Extreme for older PowerBooks...
In the German Apple-Onlinestore, , in the Airport section (called "Drahtlos" in german, just where the "Wireless" is in the US Apple-Onlinestore) somewhere near the bottom of the page is a new item:

      a Belkin 54g 802.11g PCMCIA cardbus card f*r EUR 99,- (US$103,-)

    Looks nice! Best regards,

I checked the US Apple store wireless page but as of 10:30 AM Eastern time today this item wasn't there.

Reminder on OpenOffice for X11/OS X
I've posted links on this project before, but after the Jan 7th news item on Apple's X11 for OS X, a reader sent a note about Openoffice:

"You mention the Apple X11 beta. Here's something else interesting:
I'm downloading it now from links off of the MacOS X download site. (Apple still has the older version's date, but it's evidently the Final Beta.)
    Wayne F."

If you missed the X11 news item, Apple's page with info/download link (including SDK) is

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
