News stories of Jan. 10th, 2003:

Slotted Superdrive for Powerbook G4s (and Cubes perhaps?)
(Update: when the original news item below was posted, there was only a graphic at MCE's site on the slotted superdrive upgrade showing a $449 price. As of Jan. 21st, they have a product page on it now noting $499. Perhaps that includes the installation and the original price didn't. I called them on the 21st and asked if there was any trade-in drive require (i.e. if they kept your original DVD ROM or combo drive) but was told that had not been determined yet. I'd like to keep my PB G4 combo drive for reuse in my Cube. Their product page for the upgrade as of Jan. 21st includes specs noting the drive has a 2x DVD-R write speed, vs 1x for current PB G4 models, although the page notes specifications are subject to change.)
From a reader email today (since the cube also uses a notebook type slotted drive, I suspect it might also work for the Cube)

" I am surprised no other sites have mentioned this, although MCE clearly has other issues (since only one of four Macworld announcements is listed on their homepage ).
Apparently MCE will be offering SuperDrive upgrades for PowerBook Ti owners starting February 25th for $449. The site has no other info (does that price require trade in of the existing drive?) and in fact has not yet been updated to show three other announcements that were supposed to be revealed Jan 8 (Superdrive ug for iBooks?) Jan 9 (External DVD Burner of some sort?) and Jan 10 (some drive for iMacs?).
However I spoke to the local MCE authorized repair center and they confirmed the program and the price but had no info on availability (but commented on how hard it is to get the mechanisms for their previous Ti Book dvd to combo drive upgrade program).

As the owner of a Ti 800 DVI I am really very excited about this - I waited as long as I could to buy this machine last spring but finally work pressures forced me to make the purchase before SuperDrive equipped PowerBooks were released. It is especially appealling now that I can get iDVD for $49 as a part of the iLife retail offering.
chris "

I also own a PB G4/800 (and a Cube) and would really like one of these...

Update to Apple's Safari Browser
I didn't see it highlighted at Apple's Safari web page, but the bottom of their Safari download page tonight shows a "1.0 beta (v51)" dated today, where my Tuesday download was "v48". I checked there after readers reported that Versiontracker lists an 0.8.1 update. Hopefully this update fixes the problems mentioned in yesterday's news.

Game Developer Notes/Beta Patch Contact Info for F1 racing, Black and White, Creature Isle Issues w/QT 6.1
Here's an email I received from the developer of the F1 game (and others) about the reason why the problems happened w/QT 6.1 and how to request a beta patch for F1, B&W and Creature Isle that are affected by the changes in QT 6.1:

" Hi Mike,
I saw the thread on the xlr8yourmac board about the F1 and QT 6.1 problems, and noticed you had some comments on the front page. Here's the text I've posted to IMG/MacGamer for users who've had this problem:

Unfortunately QuickTime's full screen mode API was updated in 6.1, so its blanking window is now created in a different window layer than before (it's actually on top of the game window).
We will be releasing patches shortly to address this, but in the mean time if you would like to try a beta of the patch for a particular game send some mail to the appropriate support address and we'll send you a build.
The addresses to use are:

  • bwsupport AT   => Black & White
  • cisupport AT   => Creature Isle
  • f1support AT   => F1 CS 2000
Sorry about the inconvenience in the mean time - if you haven't updated QuickTime yet, you might want to hold off doing so until the patch is released.

All of our games are built on top of a common utility library, which unfortunately means that a system-level change like this has affected all of them. -dair"

Comments on Safari Enhancer Browser Addon (non-Apple)
(from a reader email - I've not tried this personally)

" Hi Mike, found this interesting web page.
A program called Safari Enhancer

Safari Enhancer is an application for enabling several hidden features of the Safari webbrowser beta.
Safari Enhancer enables features such as a debug menu that allows the user to select what browser Safari identifies itself as, how security certificates are handled, and more. As well as importing bookmarks from several different browsers and allowing users to specify a minimum font size for Safari. "

(Safari's standard preferences allow for selecting standard and fixed-width fonts/sizes.)

First Feedback on EyeTV 1.1 Software Update/Visual Editor
Here's the first reader reports on EyeTV 1.1 (update noted in Tuesday's news).

" I downloaded the EyeTV 1.1 updater on Tuesday evening and have been playing with the editing capability quite a bit. First off, the bad news. I've had alot of crashing problems while using the editor. But the good news is that when it works it's wonderful. Editing is easy; a visual display shows key-frames with either a "Normal" or "Fine" resolution (although I found "normal" to be almost unusable. Too imprecise. Even fine doesn't display every frame.) By applying clip points you are able to choose beginning and end frames. Once you've applied all your clip points you then apply them (a one way street, sadly. No UnDo.) and viola! You've got a new movie with your clipped content edited out. Very handy. You can also pick clipped areas and export them out as stand-alone movies, thus segementing longer programs into shorter segments. Thus I was able to take a two hour movie, clip out the commercials and finally divide it into two VCDs for burning. Wonderful!

The only issue I had, outside of the crashing, was on one clip the audio and video got out of sync. Fortunately I'd made a copy of the original (after discovering the lack of undo) and I was able to make a second go at it and it worked correctly the second time. I was also a bit frustrated that I couldn't import programs I'd already exported out to MPEG back into EyeTV to be editted, but them's the breaks. Hopefully the software will be able to do this in the future.

The editor definately feels like a 1.0, but it's got enormous potential. It fills one of the gaps that the EyeTV package had, and hopefully it can only get better from here. I love this product!
-Jeremy H.
(he later wrote)
I'm running EyeTV 1.1 under Mac OS X 10.2.3 with Quicktime 6.01 and 512MB of RAM. I upgraded over the weekend to Quicktime 6.1, so we'll see how that goes. My machine is a Quicksilver dual Gigahertz, and I'm running my EyeTV off a powered USB hub. "

I'll add this over the weekend to the previous EyeTV reports page.

F1 2000 game Problems after QT 6.1 Update (Beta F1 Update fixes this)
(Updated again) The reader that first reported this problem sent an email with comments on a beta F1 fix. (Note - see the later news item above for comments from the game developer on how to request a beta update/fix for F1, Black and White, and Creature Isle which all are affected by the QT 6.1 update.)

" FYI I e-mailed Feral as well. The developer of the port, Zonics, gave me a link to a private beta which fixed the problem with QT6.1.
Apparently, QT6.1 broke other games as well. They asked me not to spread the beta around, because they were still testing it, but I'd imagine the release must be pretty imminent, otherwise alot of people will be finding F1 2000 unplayable - rather difficult to drive without picture!
BTW I also tried Medal of Honor with QT6.1 - it worked fine.
Christopher O. "

(Previous comments follow)
Two reader's have commented on problems with F1 after installing the QT 6.1 update noted yesterday. (The 2nd report notes it runs in a window, but not full screen)

"I bought F1 2000 a few days ago and installed it - it worked fine on my PowerMac MDD 867DP with a 19" Philips CRT and Radeon 9000.
This morning, I installed the Quicktime 6.1 update. Now, when I run F1 2000, the screen flashes (indicating a change of resolution) then goes black. I still get the music, and I can see a pointer and/or spinning beachball, but other than that there is no picture whatsoever. Cmd-Q still works, bringing me back to my original resolution.
Christopher O.

Another reader noted the same problem with F1/QT 6.1 in the forums here:

" I am unable to play F1 after updating to Quicktime 6.1. When I launch the game, the screen stays black. I can hear music in the background, so I know the game launched. When I go into the config.ini file and change the window mode to 1 it runs fine in a window.
Anyone else having any problems since updating QT? I have not idea why (or if) the QT update should have this effect, but it was running perfectly an hour before updating, and I have not done any other updates, or added any additional software. System is QS933, stock GeForce4MX, 512mb ram.
-Rook "

I had forgotten about the F1 demo I had noted here some time back. I tried the demo of F1 on my PB G4/800 (10.2.3/QT 6.1 update) and saw the same thing - black screen. Command-Q was able to quit out to the desktop.
If any readers have other suggestions/tips or see other problems with QT 6.1 with other games or apps, let me know. (Include system/OS details in your reports. Thanks)

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
