More Comments on Keynote Video RAM Error Notes, use on 4MB VRAM PowerBook, Exporting to PowerPoint
The reader (Frank) that commented in yesterday's news about the 8MB VRAM requirement for Keynote sent an update after I had copied him on other reader emails concerning the same error message even on Macs with 32MB of Video RAM. Here's the sample reader comments I sent to Frank:

"Strange that I got the same message when running Keynote on a 800MHz G4 laptop with 32 MB of video Ram. Quitting Keynote and then restarting cured the bogus message. This has appeared more than once.
Bruce"

Frank then replied:

" Thanks for passing this info. I made a few tests and found the following:

1. you can create the presentation with Keynote with 4MB VRAM but you can't see the results in slideshow mode.

2. I tried to circumvent the problem by exporting the presentation into a Quicktime movie but it gave me an error and Keynote quit suddenly.

3. I exported the presentation as a Powerpoint file. It worked but all the 3D effects are lost when I view the slideshow with Powerpoint for OS X latest version.

What is bizarre is that you can see the 3D effect as thumbnails in the inspector window though. I am sure someone will make a hack soon enough. I wouldn't mind having the 3D Quartz effects greyed out in the menus but be able to run keynote since doing presentations is like my bread and butter. I wish Apple will consider this.
Frank"

Another reader with an 8MB VRAM Lombard PB G3 wrote he also sees the error/dialog:

"Hi Mike,
i've read the comment reg. 8 MB VRAM for Keynote. I own a Lombard 333 with 8 MB VRAM, but i get the same error message, stating that 8 MB VRAM are neccessary to play presentations.
Regards
Thomas"

More Comments/Notes on Slow CDR Write Speeds with Combo Drives
A follow-up to yesterday's news item with another iBook owner report (and apple kbase doc link) on slower than rated speed writing with iBook combo drives:

"Hi Mike
I found something, your readers with an iBook800 might find useful.
When I insert a CD-R there are two possibilities depending on the drives mood. (my iBook is equipped with the toshiba drive) In both cases the drive spins up to full speed after inserting the disc. then it spins down a little bit and now things go random.

case a) Drive keeps spinning at very slow speed.
Then I've never been able to burn 16x, even if i choose 16x in toast. Try re-inserting the disc again.

case b) The drive spins up again.
If this happens, you should open a bottle of champaine (after pressing the write button.)

Maybe some of your readers could acknowledge this phenomenon.
Matthias "

Yesterday I repeated the past tip about inserting a CDR just before burning in Toast (which some said helped in the past to make higher speed selections possible) but some are still hoping for a firmware or other update for the Combo drives to address this.
Another reader sent a reminder on an old tip for Toast (if the disc recognition is not the speed limiter, this may help when the source drive or interface is limiting speeds)

" Upon reading this article, it brought back memories of our G4 733 machines here at the office. We received them with the Sony 8/4/24 burners and I first noticed the drives wouldn't burn at over 4x. Sound familiar?
I managed to get around this after cursing at Apple for a couple weeks and trying various CDR media types to no avail. Finally the solution I came up with was to increase the buffer size in Toast 5.1.4 to 64Mb, which we still have it set at. Seems to work fine with 8x burn speeds now. Haven't had a coaster in a few months.
Perhaps you've already tried this option, but I saw no mention of it in your article. Good luck.
Alex "

Worth a try but if this is a disc detection issue or drive firmware related that won't help. I always ran with a large Toast buffer (before OS X at least) which was help to avoid coasters in the days before buffer-underrun featured drives.

OS X iTunes Burn Support files for LG GCE-8481B 48x24x48x and Philips CDD3610
Breandan Dezendorf sent a Modified LG Plugin file he edited for LG GCE-8481B (48x24x48x) drive support in Jaguar (10.2) and iTunes3.

Sebastian Klotzer sent a Modified Philips Plugin file for OS X/iTunes burn support for the older Philips CDD3610 (2x2x6) drive. He also sent some comments on this old mechanism:

" Certain restrictions apply burning with the CDD3610 due to the hardware design and the drive's capabilities:
- DAO recording is not supported
- reading is limited to 2352 bytes RAW
- Audio Subcodes can NOT be read
Latest firmware (3.09) is strongly recommended (CDR-compatibility, overburning, etc.)
Sebastian"

(I've added both of these to the listings of other drive plugins in the FAQ's CDROM/CDR section.)
NOTE: Like all 'unofficial' mod. files - they are provided as-is with no warranty or guarantee.
The modified file replaces the original one already on your hard drive. (Use sherlock to search for the device-plugin file of the same name as the download file - it's a very long path in OS X.) You can't replace the existing file under OS X due to permissions unless you use the terminal to enable root user, or do a get-info on the file to change permissions temporarily, or just reboot into OS 9 and replace the file.

If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
