| AC3D (3D app) crashing after Quicktime 7.0.4 Update |
"
Hi Mike,
I make scenery for X-Plane and use AC3D (3D app) to make objects for the scenery.
Our X-Plane scenery members discovered that after updating to QT 7.0.4 importing objects from custom scenery in X-Plane crashed AC3D.
Reverting to QT 7.0.1 fixed the problem immediately.
This Quicktime 7.0.4 update may be affecting other applications too.

I don't use that app but asked if he'd written the author about the problem (he said yes). Also asked if it ran ok with the QT 7.0.3 update from last Oct. - I assume he had applied that update originally but he said "I don't recall updating (to) either QT 7.0.2 or 7.0.3 but I haven't had any problems with AC3D til QT 7.0.4". I asked he check his previously installed updates list in Software Update to verify.
(FYI - Apple now has a QuickTime 7.0.1 Reinstaller for QuickTime 7.0.4 that will remove QT 7.0.4 and re-install 7.0.1.)
BTW - I've updated the earlier item on Repair Permissions problems in 10.3.9 after recent QT/iTunes updates with a tip that helped a reader. (The other option someone mentioned was reverting to iTunes 6.0.1.)

| Info on Windows installs/booting on Intel CPU Macs |
Yesterday some readers asked if the new Intel CPU macs could run Windows XP. I had several replies (some asking me not to post their comments) saying it could, others saying no, some saying it would require a bootstrap loader, comments that Intel Macs use EFI (instead of BIOS) and currrent versions of Windows for X86 machines do not support booting from EFI (reader link to a Microsoft EFI and Longhorn Powerpoint doc.) although future versions of Windows (like Vista) will.
An interesting sidenote is that one reader said a friend claimed he'd booted a WinXP installer CD at the Expo on an Intel Mac (using the C key).
There's some articles on the subject including commentary at Unsanity.org on the new Machines and the MSNBC story on the Apple/Microsoft 5 year pact for Mac Office has comments from Apple execs that although they will not sell or support Windows, they've not done anything to prevent people loading Windows onto the machines.
Matthew faxed an AP article from his local paper today (couldn't find it online) that quoted Phil Schiller (Apple VP) as saying (regarding windows in Intel macs) "That's fine with us. We don't mind" and the article also said (as expected) that Microsoft welcomed the news. (More sales of Windows for them.) I wonder if down the road MS would make a deal with Apple to sell dual-boot systems (w/Windows pre-installed).

| Tips for 10.3.9 Permissions Repair problems after recent QT/iTunes updates |
Several readers replied this post tonight saying they see the exact same problem in 10.3.9 after these updates. One said ejecting all CD/DVDs he had mounted helped but I have no discs inserted in the machine. One reader said removing iTunes 6.0.2 and reinstalling iTunes 6.0.1 helped. He said reinstalling iTunes 6.0.2 resulted in the problem again. Reinstalling the 10.3.9 combo update has also been reported to help. See later reports below.
(Update: See Friday's news for an Easy Fix for the Can't Repair Permissions problem after recent updates in 10.3.9)
"
Have had some minor problems after installing latest versions of QuickTime and iTunes last night.
I'm running 10.3.9, and as I always do after installing software, rebooted and ran applejack. Appplejack could not/would not repair permissions (after waiting 20 - 25 minutes), and gave me this message (quoted verbatim):
"***malloc[247] Deallocation of a pointer not malloced: 0x509890; This could be a double free (), or free () called w/ the middle of an allocated block. Try setting environment variable MallocHelp to see tools to help debug."
I ran applejack twice, got same message (on repeat, only change was 'malloc[235]' instead of 'malloc[247]').
I rebooted, ran latest version of Cocktail (3.5.4 I believe). after 30 minutes, it did not repair permissions.
I ran TTP 4.0.5 (extensive suite) and got reports of minor errors on finder info, and repaired that.
Ran Disk Warrior and optimized Directories. All OK.
Ran Disk Util, to verify permissions on boot vol. NO GO. Wouldn't do it. Finally, ran 'repair permissions' and that worked a charm.
This morning, feeling brave, I ran applejack again on boot volume. Same as above. Only this time, Disk Util won't repair permissions (after repairing Finder info in TTP 4.0.5, as I did last night).
Fortunately, I back up daily with Super Duper, and have a clone (only lost a half day's work..... it could have been worse).
I posted all this to the MacGurus site to see if anyone else has had any problems with latest versions of QT and iTunes, and a B&W G3 owner said he'd had similar problems the updates and OS 10.3.9 as well.
I've had a ROCK SOLID system for the past 4-6 months, only to have it called into question by these two updates (as far as I can tell)..... so, a heads up to your readers running 10.3.9 to be careful.
Maybe this is Apple's way of getting us to switch to 10.4?
Steve F.
"
I didn't have applejack installed on this 10.3.9 system, but did run DIsk Utility's Repair permissions on a PB G4 w/10.3.9 that had the QT and iTunes updates applied yesterday. The first try at repairing permissions resulted in a problem - dialog popped up saying it had "lost a connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue". I quit DU and tried again - after a minute or so (about 1/4 thru the progress bar) the same thing happened. I then rebooted (no other apps running) and tried again - same error. Even a verify attempt fails. I'll have to find my OS X 10.3.x disc to try repairing the drive after booting from CD. (A reader seeing the same problem said running DU from CD didn't help - still errored out.) Looks like I'll be re-applying the 10.3.9 combo update.
Update - I was surprised to get several mails shortly after posting this from 10.3.9 users that saw the same thing I did. One mentioned removing iTunes 6.0.2 and reinstalling iTunes 6.0.1 fixed it:
"
I had this problem too and traced it down to iTunes 6.0.2... when I removed it and re-installed iTunes 6.0.1 everything was fine. Another try at itunes 6.0.2 resulted in the same problem ("lost a connection w/the disk management tool" when trying to repair permissions)
So I again went back to iTunes 6.0.1 and am staying w/it until there's a fix. I'm running a mac os x 10.3.9 on a G4 sawtooth w/a 1.3ghz gigadesign cpu upgrade.
"
My system is stock Powerbook G4 17in (older 1.33GHz model). The only non-standard addon I can think of on it is ASM. (Apps switcher menu.)
Another reader said re-installing the 10.3.9 combo update (and security update) helped:
"
Posted your news article to a friend that had the same issues updating panther on a 1 yr old 15" PB and she wrote back...
Indeed. Definitely an interesting quirk.
I downloaded the 10.3.9 combo update and security update combo (2005-09) - and re-installed them. Fixed it last night.
-Phil M.
"
Here's the links to save readers some time if they want to try that:
Note: re-applying the combo update did help some of the others that had this problem.

| Report that 10.4.4 Breaks M-Audio Audiophile drivers |
| (updated with another report w/tip)
"
10.4.4 also breaks latest M-Audio drivers (2.05 dmg) for Audiophile series again
10.4.2, 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 have all broken the drivers. Poor M-Audio.
Symptom is endless white noise audio loop from external speakers.
-Robert H
"
If anyone spots an update/fix let me know. Not heard from any USB Transit owners that tried 10.4.4 yet.
Update - several M-Audio Revolution card owners said they were still OK in 10.4.4.
A 2496 Audiophile card owner said he's not had a problem in 10.4.4 and had a suggestion:
"
I have the 2496 Audiophile card and it works fine in my Dual 2.5 G5
with 10.4.4; also running the M-Audio Delta 2.0.5 driver set from
December 9, 2005. I have had glitches with M-Audio drivers in the
past which were resolved by going into the M-Audio preference pane
and re-selecting the input and output options. That happened once or
twice after updated in the M-Audio driver. I'm guessing the new
driver didn't use the old PLIST.
John
"No reports yet on M-Audio USB Transit users w/10.4.4.

iEye Captain now compatible with EyeTV 2, price dropped to $20
EyeTV users are quite excited about Elgato releasing EyeTV 2.0, but many are not excited about the $49 price tag, and many important features that still haven't made it into EyeTV. iEye Captain is still the only way to use more than one disk for your recordings, automatically control your cable box or satellite receiver via infrared, export aliases or tab-delimited text, and a host of other tasks.
To accommodate users who want to upgrade to EyeTV 2.0, I have burned much midnight oil, and can assure you that iEye Captain is now fully compatible with EyeTV 2. Also, I have lowered the price to $20 for the rest of the beta period. You can still save $20 if you buy a ZephIR infrared device at the same time, effectively giving you iEye Captain for free.
You can find iEye Captain at this VT page or at this MacUpdate page.
Thanks,
Graham Jones (developer of iEye Captain)

| Multiple Speaker support in iTunes 6.0.2 (w/Airport Express) |
| A couple readers mentioned this in iTunes 6.0.2 released yesterday. (As mentioned in the post below you also need an Airport Express.)
"
noticed there is the ability to run "multiple speakers" in itunes 6.02,
this means you can run both speakers attached to your computer and
remote ones via airport express!
Always like to have the better sound through the airport, but can know
also use "local" speakers .
(Some were confused as to where this option was, since apple had not yet updated
their iTunes pages with info on it, so David added more details:)
When you have an Airport express on your network, a little box
appears on the bottom of itunes. Simply selecting the box brings up
"Multiple Speakers"
Before 6.0.2, you could only select one speaker.
The new version added the "MULTIPLE SPEAKER" Option at the bottom.
....wonder if apple will ever allow "everything" to play through the airport express? like airfoil does?
AND
I will be waiting until the 2nd generation intel Pbooks come out
before replacing my firewire 800 15"- the change is too radical- and
there is no open list on what does and doesn't work!
I will bet virtual PC doesn't for starters!

Mike, Just a quick note about the Windows Media Components for QuickTime.
As a previous user of Flip4Mac WMV Player Pro, it's been renamed to

"
I tried to take advantage of the special Toast promotion mentioned
today on your website. I ordered the Toast 7 / Boom Box bundle ($99).
Problem is, I didn't get an unlock code for Toast in the confirmation
email - only for Boom Box! This makes it impossible to use my new
purchase. I wonder if anyone else has reported this. Another Roxio
screw-up?
(I asked if he'd called or wrote Roxio about this. Also forwarded
his mail to Adam at Roxio-Mike)
To make a long story short, spent almost an hour on the phone (toll free) with Roxio and Digital River, who promised to send the serial number within 48 hours... :(

| CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 2 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,440 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
DVD+R/RW + DVD-R/RW Drives:
- IDE NEC ND-4550A in Beige G3 (OS X 10.3)
(Using Patchburn 3 for 10.3.x iApps burn support. Illustrated CD drive install guide here covers Beige G3, B&W G3 and G4 towers up to the Digital Audio Model.)
- IDE Pioneer DVR-110D in (MDD) Dual G4 DDR (OS X 10.4)
(Asked if 10.4.4 makes the 110D "Apple Supported", as it's one of the drives apple has shipped in dual core G5s)
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
