Another report on Mac notebook motherboard connector repairs
"I just wanted to follow up on Randy's experience with the his
Powerbooks's broken motherboard connector. (From Friday's news) I have a new 12" ibook G4 which I decided to enhance with a Seagate Momentus 80gig hard drive. I found a bunch of discussions and tutorials on the 'Net on how to take an iBook apart, read them over, and felt pretty confident that I could do the upgrade.
Everything was going fine until I had to unplug the various cables
from the motherboard. Calling the iBook/Powerbook power connector
"delicate" is an understatement! Those darn things are held on with
only a thread of solder. And the connector has, quite literally, just
two pin points. I pulled mine right off just by lifting the top cover
a little too far in order to get a better look at the connection.
Needless to say, I was majorly bummed, but I proceeded with the hd
upgrade anyway. (BTW, the new iBooks have a different hd connection system than the ones described in many of the tutorials.)
Anyhow, as I was completing the upgrade, I was going through the
different repair options in my head. There was no way I could do that
fine a soldering job. I had pretty much concluded that I would have
to spend another $350 to get it fixed, a la Randy's scenario. I was
resigned to this. Then I thought, what the heck, if I have to pay
that money anyway, I might as well try to fix it.
I went to my shop, grabbed some "liquid solder" (conductive epoxy) and some silicon sealant. With tweezers, I held the broken connector in place on the motherboard, and with a pin, (yes, a pin) I applied some silicon sealant to the sides of the connector and motherboard. After letting that set up, I mixed some liquid solder and with a magnifying glass and pin, applied tiny, tiny, amounts of the glue to the connector pins and the traces on the motherboard. I reassembled the machine and without waiting (heck, I had already wrecked it, right?), pushed the power button. It fired up on the first try! I'm on my third day of using this machine without a problem.
After my experience, I cannot believe that there aren't a great
number of Apple Authorized repair centers wrecking iBook power
connector's, too.

G5 (PCI-X) owner report on Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 PCI Card Deep Sleep Support
"
Your site has been indispensable for finding a new USB 2 card for my
G5 Tower (Original 1.8ghz single processor system with PCI-X). I
purchased the Sonnet Allegro USB 2.0 PCI Card (www.sonnettech.com/product/allegro_usb2.html) at the Macworld Expo.
It will deep sleep in my tower with nothing plugged into it.
However, it appears on my system if I plug in any device that draws
power from the card then the computer will half go to sleep where I
can't wake it up anymore. The system stays on but the monitor turns
off and I can't wake it.
If I only plug in devices that have their
own power sources then the computer will sleep just fine. Right now
I have a printer and a UPS system plugged in and it sleeps. If I
plug in my USB card reader that draws power from the card, or my
keyboard or mouse, it won't sleep properly.
Hope that helps,
Steven M.

I've added this to the previous page of G5 owner Feedback on USB and Firewire Devices/Cards.

iMovie HD 6 and Gee Three Slick Plugin problem
"
Gee Three Slick Plug-in dialogue boxes will throw iMovie HD 6 into
infinite spin. I believe Gee Three is working on the problem.
(I asked what version he was using in case there was a later update.-Mike)
Mike here is my response fro the Gee Three guys. They responded very
quickly.
-Allen
(GeeThree comments follow)
"We're back form MacWorld Expo and doing testing with the new iLife '06. It
looks like we're going to need an update for the Slick software, as some of
the plug-ins do not work properly. Many things work fine, and there are
workarounds for other issues. We'll update you when we have additional
information. Thanks for your patience.
Best Regards,
GeeThree Slick Team
PS - If you plan to install iLife 06, be sure to rename iMovie HD to a
different name before you run the installer so the iLife installer does not
erase iMovie HD 5."

Digital Audio G4 owner report on sleep problems in 10.4.4 w/USB BT module
"
I just thought I'd drop you a line about my DP 533 (Dig. Audio) setup
after updating to 10.4.4. I was about to pull my USB 2.0 card
because my computer would suddenly not sleep any more, and I didn't have anything connected to it, but as it turns out, it was my
bluetooth dongle that I'd put inside (connected to one of the PCI card's ports I assume. See below for report of no sleep problems with BT adapter connected to onboard USB ports in 10.4.4.-Mike) and forgotten about.
It's the official/unofficial Apple one - the D-link dbt-120 with Apple
firmware, and now, with the 10.4.4 update, it won't sleep (anything
that I can wake it from) with it plugged into my NEC based USB 2.0
card.
It's like every update, they take something away. First, it
was my Yamaha RP-U100 (picture an external USB stereo receiver/
soundcard) started to cause sleep issues with 10.4.2, then somewhere in there, my micflex USB microphone started to have problems, and now with 10.4.4, my bluetooth. I officially can only plug in my palm pilot cradle without sleep issues now, and I used to have all 5 ports in use. Sheesh...
-Matt
"
Another Digital Audio owner running 10.4.4 said he had no sleep problems with the adapter connected to the onboard USB ports:
"
Hi Mike, An add-on to the item (above) about a Digital Audio G4 not sleeping after upgrading to 10.4.4 when a D-Link BlueTooth adapter is installed.
I have a Digital Audio (with an OWC 1.3GHz upgrade) running 10.4.4, and the same D-Link adaptor, complete with the latest Apple firmware. My unit still sleeps just fine, but the BT adaptor is plugged into the original USB connectors, not a PCI card. The adaptor is only USB 1.1, so the original poster might want to try moving it from his USB 2 card to a USB 1.x port.

Report on iTunes 6.0.2 and Digidesign CoreAudio Plugin Problem
| (I don't use this plugin but posting as a FYI in case anyone else sees this.)
"
My problem with upgrading to iTunes 6.0.2 on 1.67GHz
PB was a blank license agreement, and the following
error message when I clicked agree. "The iTunes
application could not be opened. There is not enough
memory available." I googled that error and tried
every solution I found.
Finally, I heeded a suggestion to look at /Applications/Utilities/Console, where I found out that I was loading the Digidesign CoreAudio Plugin, even though I stopped using
DigiDesign hardware months ago. I found the uninstall
procedure at the Digidesign website. (the procedure
is to remove it from Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL)
Since the driver was still loaded, I restarted. I
started iTunes immediately after rebooting and the
license agreement looked normal, and clicking agree
started iTunes normally.
(I asked if he was using the latest version of the Plugin-Mike)
Sorry I wasn't more detailed. I did not have
the most recent version of the plugin. In fact,
one reason I stopped using Protools was the constant
paying for Protools upgrades after each upgrade of Mac
OS X (which are often free).
I don't doubt that Protools remains the standard, and
most problems with Protools can be solved by paying
for the upgrades, but I didn't use it enough to
justify.
The reason I sent that post in was that, as I was
troubleshooting, I learned about the process of
troubleshooting from an xlr8yourmac post.
It was really more about learning the process of
slogging through the output of /Applications/Utilties/Console
and finding the suspicious plugin, then googling
to find out about that plugin.
