| Apple notes on Printer/Scanner Drivers with new Intel CPU Macs |
| (Updated - see below for replies/more info)
"
I was just wondering whether any readers have managed to test the
functionality of existing PowerPC-native printer and scanner drivers
(Firewire & USB) when used in conjunction with the new iMac Core Duo - i.e. emulated/translated using Rosetta.
Thanks ...

Mike, This is from an Apple training course in reference to the new iMac Core Duo machine.

"Will printers/scanners/misc. devices work?
Nearly every printer driver, plus many more, that shipped with Tiger is included in Mac OS X for Intel as a universal binary.
If you only have a PPC printer driver, it should run in Rosetta.
For scanners and other devices, these likely will not work properly in Rosetta, customers should check with the vendor for a universal binary version of the driver/plug-in."

The installer ships with a whole bunch of printer drivers similar to
the installer for PPC-only machines.
An EPSON Scanner Image Capture
native driver is also installed by default. Image Capture application
can be used to scan using older PPC-only TWAIN data sources either
using the Image Capture UI or the TWAIN UI.

If any reader has an Intel CPU Mac has notes on working/not working printers and/or scanners let me know.

| Reader Impressions of 20in/2GHz Intel iMac |
"
here are some videos from my SE W600 cell phone of a 20" Intel iMac in the Apple store in South Coast Plaza today.
http://homepage.mac.com/gsf/tehsnappyiimac.3gp
http://homepage.mac.com/gsf/iimacbooting.3gp
of note: the thing went from Apple logo to first app running in less
than 18 seconds. That pretty much beats the crap out of my DP G5.
there was no perceivable mouse lag when resizing the slashdot page. It was absolutely amazing.
On playback of MPEG-4 AVC (aka, h.264):
I played 4 different 1080p clips on the thing (obviously, none of
them fit on the screen completely). 3 of 4 "1080p" clips played with
absolutely no framerate loss at 24fps.
XMen 3, Cars, and that Jon Heder/David Spade movie all played their
1080p clips without incident... other than they didn't fit on the
screen.
Some baseball movie didn't play well at all.. it was bad. I don't
know what to say. There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why it kept dropping to 12 fps.
office ran as snappy as on my DP 1.8 G5....
Specs: Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz, 1 GB ram, 128 meg video card. (which i think is stock). cheers on a great website.

| Report on Photocast not compatible with Safari v2.0.3 (10.4.4) |
| (from a reader mail)
"
Hi Mike, Apparently, Safari isn't a compatible browser for Apple's new
Photocast with iPhoto '06 :-) (see pic attached). (he sent a screenshot showing a message in Safari saying "We're Sorry, the Browser you're using does not support the display of Photocasts... you can view the photos in this Photocast using Safari RSS included with Mac OS X Tiger v10.4 or later or other photo compatible RSS reader for Mac, Windows or other operating systems...")
I wonder what else isn't compatible yet! I'm running 10.4.4. on a dual 1.8Ghz G5, so Safari is v2.0.3 (417.8). Hysterical!
Also, if you have Aperture 1.0.1 with a ".vault" of your iPhoto '05 library, when you upgrade it refuses saying "you don't have enough permissions" so you have to unlock it and move it. Works fine after the upgrade.
Cheers mate. Bobbi

| 802.11a support in new Intel iMac |
"
I don't know if you noticed it, but that ars technica article that
you linked to (review of the Intel Core Duo iMac 17in model) mentions that the Intel iMac apparently supports 802.11a!
If so, you'd think that they would use it on the MacBook Pro too, one wonders why that hasn't been advertised... There's no
mention of 802.11a support anywhere on Apple's site, as far as I can
tell.

"
My guess would be it's not mentioned since Apple currently has no 802.11a Airport base station.

| CDRW/DVD/Hard Drive/Storage Compatibility Database Update Listing |
| The Drive Compatibility Database had 3 new reports added this morning. (Entries later today are added the next newsday morning.) The database includes reports on CDRWs, Combo DVD-CDRW, DVD-ROM, DVD Burners, Hard Drives and Removables (tape drive, ORB, ZIP, MO drives, NAS, CF/Smartmedia readers, etc.) in all interface types (IDE, IDE RAID cards, SATA, Firewire, SCSI, USB, adapters). Current total - 15,460 reports. (searching by drive type/brand, mac model etc. listed below will show the full reports, most recent first - does not include updates to previous reports) iApps burn support mentioned in reports unless otherwise noted.
You can find full owner reports (latest shown first) by searching the database by drive/brand/interface/mac models (the latest reports are shown first in searches).
For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc. If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. (If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.)
(Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
