Maya 8.5 Universal Binary
(from a reader mail - updated)

" Universal Mac Version Maya 8.5 now shipping; however, does not, at this time, work on Mac laptops. (The person who stated Maya 8.5 "does not, at this time, work on Mac laptops" was Rob Hoffmann, senior manager of product marketing for Autodesk/Maya) (See below - a reader replied he's running Maya 8.5 on a MacBook Pro. -Mike)
According to what I have read/been told, Autodesk is working on a laptop version for the Mac...which may be released with the next 'upgraded' Apple laptop release.
have a great week,
~@~"

For more info on 8.5 see the What's new page and Detailed feature list.
BTW - a MacBook Pro user replied to this post:

" Maya works fine on my MacBook Pro, Core 2 Duo.
(I asked to confirm the Maya Version)
It's Maya 8.5 that I have installed, we use Maya here at Ghost (www.ghost.dk) all the time.
Venlig hilsen / Kind regards"

The MacBook has onboard Intel GMA-950 graphics so not sure that mac notebook would be supported. (MacBook pro has ATI X1600 w/dedicated vram.)
FYI - I did some searching and found the Qualification of Maya 8.5 on Mac OS X page that has info on supported systems, graphics cards and more. The page currently is a work in progress apparently. (I've added a copy of this to the previous page on Mac Maya 7.0/8.0 User Reports.)

Another Intel-based Mac Mini Core Duo CPU Upgrade report
I've updated the page on Mac Mini Core 2 Duo CPU Upgrades (Chip Swaps) with another report on swapping in a Core Duo CPU in a Core Solo Mini. (I originally misread the email, thinking it was a Core2 Duo swap.) Article includes previous link to chip swap guide. (Prices on the 1.83GHz Core2 Duo were under $250 when I checked last month although the 2.33GHz Core2's were more than twice as expensive. Intel always has a premium on the fastest models. Core Duo CPUs would be cheaper than the Core 2's.)

Universal Binary of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory for Mac OS X
3dgamers.com has a news item titled Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Mac OSX full install & public source code v2.60c:

" id Software has issued a new full install for the Mac OSX edition of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory to bring this port of the free team-based multiplayer first-person shooter by Splash Damage to version 2.60c. There are no details on the changes in this minor upgrade, but it's accompanied by the correspondingly updated public source code for Mac OSX."

It's listed on 3d gamer's ET downloads page. id Software's programmer Timothee Besset also has notes on it in his updated .plan file:

" I've uploaded a universal binary of Wolfenstein ET to our ftp server [1] and bittorrent server [2].
md5: 39cb5f3dcc07b9a56afddad3868652c2 Wolfenstein ET.2.60c.dmg

I've been putting that build together as a side project for a while now, and it was time to get it out. I'll watch for feedback and fix showstoppers (if any). The client will work against the official ET 2.60 servers running etmain/, and PunkBuster is included.

I hope ETPro and other major ET mods out there can update and support the new Mac client soonish. Meanwhile you may have a bit of trouble finding servers that will accept this new client (the best approach may be to use qstat [3] and filter for servers running etmain/, I haven't found a good third party server browser for OSX at this point)

I updated the SDK [4] (there are very little changes to the source), in which you'll find XCode projects to compile the universal binaries of ui, game and cgame.

There. I hope that kicks off a GREAT year for the Enemy Territory franchise :-)

Another Black MacBook owner notes on finish flaking off
Yesterday's news had a link to a black Macbook owner's photo gallery on the finish flaking off. I hadn't heard much on this problem since the early days but another reader replied he's also seen this:

"I've got a black macbook (1st gen I think) and the finish is flaking on all 4 corners of the upper portion of the case and on the edges of the lower portion. These are probably the areas that get the highest wear and tear but I am still taking it back to the store that i bought it in to see about getting it swapped over. Its not that big a deal as its only a cosmetic issue but I would rather have a good finish on mine, no complaints with the wife's white one regarding staining etc.
-Daniel"

Apple has a kbase doc on About white MacBooks' palmrest area noting to contact Applecare if you notice discoloration. (There's an older post here on iBook Case Cleaning Tips/Products readers used to clean its white casing.)
