Apple releases OS X Security Update 2007-001 (improves QuickTime security)
Apple has released Security Update 2007-001, available via software update or from their pages on Security Update 2007-001 (Universal) for OS X Tiger and Security Update 2007-001 (Panther). The update is to address a QuickTime security issue mentioned on the web several weeks ago. (Jan. 2nd news here had notes on this.) Here's a clip from the apple doc About Security Update 2007-001

" Security Update 2007-001
CVE-ID: CVE-2007-0015
Available for: QuickTime 7.1.3 on Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X Server v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.8, Mac OS X Server v10.4.8, Windows XP/2000

Impact: Visiting malicious websites may lead to arbitrary code execution

Description: A buffer overflow exists in QuickTime's handling of RTSP URLs. By enticing a user to access a maliciously-crafted RTSP URL, an attacker can trigger the buffer overflow, which may lead to arbitrary code execution. A QTL file that triggers this issue has been published on the Month of Apple Bugs web site (MOAB-01-01-2007). This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of RTSP URLs."

Thanks to Matthew for the heads-up.

Mac Pro owner notes on Lite-On '20x20' DVD burner upgrade and Lightscribe drivers/software install
(from a drive db report today)

" Hi there I just wanted to add a report on adding the Lite-On LH-20A1H 20x20 DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive Lightscribe drive to my Mac Pro 2.0GHz, running OS 10.4.8.

I just followed the directions on "replacing an optical drive" in Apples little owners booklet that came with my Mac Pro. It went right in and then was immediately recognized by Mac OS 10.4.8. To get the lightscribe to work I needed to install the file found at this link:
http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/mac/index.aspx?id=813
You need to install it first and then to use the lightscribe function you need to install a label lightscribe label program like Lacie's Labeler program for mac found at http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/index.htm.
It is important in the installation of this program to select "Custom" install and Un-check the "Host software" module button.

I was then able to print a lightscribe DVD, which is way cool. Burning speed for a full disk label took just under 30 minutes using the latest Verbatim 16X lightscribe DVD media.

FWIW the Lite-on drive is a bit quieter than the original Sony superdrive in my Mac Pro, to my ears anyway, and a whole lot faster. It ripped a cd into iTunes at an average of 37-40 X compared to 17-20 times for the same disk on the Sony, and burned a copy of a 1 hour home made DVD from my Sony in under 4 minutes using Toast 6. Very happy with the drive.

Warcraft III v1.21 patch (universal binary, new maps/changes)
Eddie sent a note that the Warcraft III v1.21 Patch Notes (dated yesterday) mentions the game now runs natively on both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macs and has other notes on changes/fixes/new Maps/Map changes - including an important note on patching for Mac players:

"Important Note on Patching for Mac Players: The file layout inside the game folder is changed significantly by Patch 1.21. As a result, in order to be able to install the Frozen Throne expansion from CD, you must install Reign of Chaos first, then install Frozen Throne from CD, and then patch to version 1.21, in that order. If you patch to v1.21 and then attempt to install Frozen Throne after that, it will not install correctly."
