| RocketRAID 2314MS not working in 2008 Mac Pro |
| From a reader mail today - looking to see if anyone else is using a RR card in a 2008 Mac Pro with better luck:
"I just purchased one of the new 2008 Mac Pro systems and a Rocket Raid 2314MS card. The RAID controller/Driver seem to be incompatible with the new Mac Pro systems. I'm waiting to hear back from High Point support currently. I'm wondering if any of your readers have successfully used any High Point cards with the new model Mac Pro's yet?
(I asked what driver version he was using, as after OS X leopard was released many readers had problems with their RR cards (at least PPC Mac owners) and there were several driver "updates" although they kept the same driver version number.)
I installed the driver that's currently posted on the hptmac.com site. rr231x_0x-Mac-v220-103007
I have followed the other (earlier reader/RR problem) posts. I think this is a new issue specific to the new mac pro. Even installed the windows vista driver on my boot camp partition and had no luck.
Tested quite a few configurations, Tried all 3 slots... Drives connected or disconnected
.kext shows loaded in system profiler, shows up as scsi adapter in system profiler under pci cards
No KP or hangs, the web ui just fails to load. When I run the web server process from the command line directly it complains about no driver detected.
BTW: No system freezes, but only really spent one day in front of this box so far. -Blake"
If anyone else is using a RocketRaid 2314 (or sees any other card compat. issue) with a 2008 Mac Pro, let me know the details. Thanks. (I've added this to the previous page of 2008 Mac Pro owner feedback.)

| Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray Player+SuperDrive Combo Drive |
(From site sponsor OWC)
"Pioneer SATA Blu-Ray Player+SuperDrive Combo
We have added two p/ns for a new Pioneer Blu-Ray player/SuperDrive DVD/CD
Burner Combo. This drive is SATA and will work with any Mac or PC that has an available SATA Port. Works fine via standard SATA Controller cards as well (within 2 weeks we'll post full compatibility testing). $219.99 for the straight up drive with no cables, etc. - $229.99 for the drive bundled with Mac Pro Installation Guide + this
cable The bare drive is immediately available. The Mac Pro Kit will be able to ship in the next week or so once our install guide is completed. For those who have their own installation information resources, well - just need the cable and the drive. The cable is the correct cable for connecting to one of the Mac Pro's two 'extra' SATA Ports and does NOT conflict/take up one of the HD bay ports.
Lawrence R. O'Connor Other World Computing"
Mac Pro motherboard has 2 spare/unused SATA ports some readers have used in the past for a SATA Optical drive or Using the 2 extra ports with an External SATA Case Kit. (FYI - The 2 spare ports are not usable with Windows using the default drivers but for a tip (driver change/grub bootloader edit) was posted in Tuesday's (Jan 15, 2008) news.

| SoftRAID 3.6.6 released |
| (from the PR email today)
"SoftRAID, LLC announces the release and immediate shipment of SoftRAID 3.6.6. SoftRAID 3.6.6 is an update which improves Leopard compatibility and adds the ability to convert SoftRAID volumes to Apple format (including Apple RAID).SoftRAID 3.6.6 fixes several bugs with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) which have been reported over the past several months. SoftRAID 3.6.6 also incorporates many work-arounds for bugs in the currently shipping version of Leopard (version 10.5.1).
SoftRAID 3.6.6 now allows users to convert their SoftRAID disks to Apple disk format (and back to SoftRAID afterwards). Non-RAID SoftRAID volumes are converted to standard Apple volumes, while SoftRAID stripe and mirror volumes are converted to Apple RAID volumes with this feature. This is useful for firmware updating which requires standard Apple volumes, for compatibility / performance testing and to allow users to try out SoftRAID's unique features with zero risk.
SoftRAID continues to be the most cost effective method and reliable method of providing both real-time and off-site backup for busy professionals, small businesses and server administrators.
The SoftRAID 3.6.6 release is a free electronic upgrade to all 3.x owners. (All registered users will receive a free upgrade via email.) The SoftRAID 3.6.4 electronic download is $129 and the retail CD is $149, both available from the SoftRAID website and retail outlets worldwide."
