| iMovie 7.x Menu item issues in Leopard w/imported (from Tiger) Custom Display profiles |
| (from a reader mail)
"I have iMovie 7.1.1 (update released on Tuesday), now that I ran the update and I can no longer create a new project. The New Project menu item in the File menu is grayed out. (Running DP 2.7 GHz G5 - 2 GB RAM - OS X.5.1 - iMovie 7.1.1)
(I didn't see this problem here (iMac/10.5.1/iMovie 7.1.1 updated - but he later wrote it was not due to the 7.1.1 update per se.)
It appears that the bug I've run into was introduced in the previous update. After some research I found that there is a bug in the display preferences brought over from 10.4. If you have calibrated the color settings (monitor colorsync profile) in the Displays->System Preferences under 10.4 and then upgraded to 10.5, it appears that you will not have access to any menu items under the File Menu other than import. All that was required to fix the issue was to use one of the generic/standard color settings provided by Apple. Kind of odd, but that's the fix. I didn't use iMovie since I've been on the new OS (Leopard).
Thanks, SMR"

| More on Mac Office 2008 - Problems importing previous Entourage X mail/accts |
(Updated - see note below about known issue listing on importing from pre-Office 2004 versions - I guess PHD didn't read the "readme" file...)
Another reply to last night's post on Mac Office 2008 registration problems, but this one also notes problems importing previous Entourage X mail/accounts. (See below - another reader had no problems importing from Office 2004 Entourage - but is any problem common anymore...)
"I purchased the Student and Home version of MS Office 2008 yesterday. The installation went smoothly, and I did make the effort to try and register it online by signing up for the required "Windows Live" account. The ID number generated through the installation process was not accepted, even though it clearly conformed to the example given so that you could be certain you had the proper number (as opposed to the installation key, three of which are on the CD packing).
The software works without need of registration, so it isn't an issue, as Microsoft only needs you to provide the ID number to them if you require assistance. (Others noted running it fine also despite registration problems - I just wondered if registration was required to use the software long-term (as some software requires registration/activation to work beyond say a 30 day period)-Mike)
Additionally, I was previously using Office X, and Entourage does not import the information, messages, accounts and so forth from my old identity. Several people on the Google group discussion of Entourage 2008 have offered suggestions which have failed to be of assistance. I'm using Tiger 10.4.11, so this isn't a Leopard issue. It seems that others are having the same experience and this is looking like a bug that will require fixing. Manually dragging everything from the old program to the new is not a satisfactory option. Best wishes, PHG"
Update: a note from another reader about known issues with importing from pre-Office 2004 versions:
"Mike, I also got Office: Mac 2008 (Upgrade) at MacWorld and installed it on my wife's MacBook. NO problems going from Office 2004 to 2008.However, while reading the Known issues in Office 2008, I found the following under Known issues for installation and removal of Office 2008:
- Office Setup Assistant cannot import identities that were created in Office 98, Office 2001, and Office v. X. To import these identities after installation, open Entourage 2008, and then on the File menu, click Import.
This was the seventh bulleted item. I'm not sure if the previous e-mailer, PHG, was aware of this or not. I hate to say it, but sometimes..., we Mac users do need to READ the Read Me files. -Fabian"
I'd like to think he tried importing via the File menu option also but sent him a note on the readme - He replied the File menu import also didn't work, and said he'd tried the other suggestion I had - rebuilding/compacting the Entourage X database (Option key held down at app. start.) He's certain this is a bug that Microsoft needs to fix and sent a link to his thread on the issue at microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage.
Another mail below notes no problems with install/importing from Office 2004:
"Received & Installed the standard Office 2008 upgrade today on an Intel iMac 2.8GHZ. (running OS X 10.5.1? or OS X 10.4.x?-Mike) OS X 10.5.1. Everything went very smooth and all elements (programs) work flawlessly.
Imported all Entourage Office 2004 mail to Office 2008 with no problem. I do not have multiple mail accounts. Frankly, I was surprised at how well the installation went.
-Stephen G."

| Mac CPU Upgrade Reports Database Updated |
| The Rate Your CPU Upgrade database has been updated with another report this morning. Total to date: 10,337. Here's a summary of the latest addition (search database by upgrade brand, mac model, etc. for a complete list/comments of all user reports on matching criteria - latest reports first).
- Mirror Drive Door G4 1.25GHz (single cpu) Overclocked to 1.5GHz
(includes links to related article - the Systems page G4 macs section has many MDD related articles including cooling mods, Apple MDD Copper Heatsink Swap, case conversions, and the first (to my knowledge) article posted on the MDD CPU Module design/speed settings, core voltage settings, etc.)
(Full reviews of G4 and G3 upgrades compared to stock CPUs, including real world apps/game tests, install info, etc. are linked at the G4 upgrade reviews and G3 upgrade reviews pages. OC/CPU module articles are on the Systems page.)
If you've upgraded the CPU on your Mac, send a review with your experience (performance/stability/installation, etc.), Mac Model/Upgrade brand info and overall rating (1= worst to 10=best). If you can, please run some tests with the original CPU vs the upgrade (for example time some tests with your favorite app, game, etc. - see full reviews here for example tests with common apps/games/benchmarks.)
