| More on Mac Office 2008 Mail/Acct Importing |
| (late posting this reply to last week's posts on the subject, although they were regarding Entourage X and 2004 imports. Updated with reader note below)
"I thought i would share a word of warning about Office 2008. I installed the suite today and was keen to see how Entourage 2008 looked and performed as it will be implemented soon at one of my major clients. In order to get a proper feel for things i imported my accounts from Apple Mail in Leopard. The import went very well and everything transferred over without a hitch. I have 2 main accounts. One of them is a bog standard POP account, and the other is an IMAP account. The POP account was not affected by the problem i had. When the import had finished, i was asked for the passwords to my accounts. I then expanded the list of IMAP folders and had a quick look inside. Everything in each folder appeared correctly for a few seconds but then the mails started to vanish. The progress indicator, bottom right of the main window, indicated that it was moving the messages to 'INBOX (On My Computer). Now, i use several rules to file my emails automatically on the IMAP account into folders on the server. When i checked them out, every IMAP rule had changed and was set to move my mails into 'INBOX (On My Computer)'. (Update: see reader notes on this below.-Mike) They should have been set to move to the relevant folders on the IMAP server. I'm not sure if this was a problem during import, or not. I am inclined to think it happened because the IMAP sub folders had not been registered prior to the rules being imported from Mail as my password was required to obtain the list. This seems to have caused Entourage to default all of the rules to 'INBOX (On My Computer)', as it couldn't find the proper folders until i gave my account password. The request for the password happens AFTER the import has been done.
This problem could be a headache for people who have huge numbers of IMAP folders/emails. I fixed it by correcting each IMAP rule in Entourage and setting the rules running on 'INBOX (On My Computer)'

Update - Wes replied with a note:
regarding "every IMAP rule had changed and was set to move my mails into 'INBOX (On My Computer)'.
"This is a general "feature" of Entourage. If the mailbox pointed to in a
rule isn't known, the rule reverts to the folder on the local system. I see
this most commonly when I do a full Rebuild Database. During this process,
knowledge of IMAP and Exchange folders is lost until Entourage refreshes the
folder list. Any rules pointing to an IMAP or Exchange folder will have to
manually fixed - they will now be pointing to the local system. It doesn't
fix itself once the folder list is populated.
