Current News Page

The Yosemite Speed Settings page has been updated for info on the jumper settings for bus speeds.

The Yosemite Compatibility page has been updated with with a reader note on the Korg 1212 audio card and a report of success on the RagePro VR card in an IDE based system. A SCSI based owner reported problems with RageII/RagePro cards which makes me think the SCSI card may be a factor.

Yosemite Bezels/Faceplates: Yisroel Jacobs sent a note that Proline has posted a page listing Bezels and faceplate options for the new G3 macs at: http://www.proline.com/Blue%20G3.html. I've written them to obtain a ZIP kit for an upgrade article on my DVD/350 (no ZIP) article. Proline made the 4-drive internal RAID bracket/fan kit used in my 8600 Internal Raid article.

Lotus Still Supporting Mac: Christopher Chew wrote with regarding Lotus's continuing support for the Mac in Notes:

" Mike,
In case you didn't see this....
InfoWorld published a nice story about Lotus's continuing commitment to produce Notes for the Macintosh platform. I think you'll find some of the quotes from Antonio Robinson encouraging.

Media 100 Compatibility: In response to yesterday's post asking for Media 100/Yosemite compatibility Rob Thiemann wrote:

" Hi Mike,
I'm sure you know this, but Media100 does their own compatibility testing, and the usually run about 1-3 months behind the release of Apple's new hardware and software. the biggest advantage I can see is that if they test it, they pretty guarantee it'll work, unless there's a hardware defect...
They usually provide that info here:

http://www.media100.com/techinfo.html#Compatible%20Peripherals

And it's usually pretty in depth regarding specific slots and what not. Sad to say, it's what's consulted first before upgrading the 9600 box at work...
I'm sure though that there is a user out there who just can't wait though...

While on the video capture topic - Aurora Design wrote me yesterday to say their Fuse video capture card (reviewed here) drivers have been updated for Yosemite compatibility

" Darryl modified our drivers so that Fuse now works with the Blue G3's. I will probably send out a press release next week. The reason Fuse did not work was not due to the hardware, but the fact that the NewWorld ROM make use of both Physical and Logical address spaces. Our drivers were incorrectly using Physical addresses when DMAing data across the PCI bus. This did not affect earlier systems since there really was no difference between Physical and Logical addresses. It looks as though we may have a fully protected memory address space when Mac OS X arrives :-)

Feedback on Apple's V.90 Modem Update: I originally planned to post all reader comments on the new beige G3/6500 56K modem update noted in yesterday's news but I've received pages and pages of positive reports. Several readers commented the readme note on lower connect rates but higher download speeds seemed to be accurate. So far all readers reported the upgrade was well worth applying.

Iomega Buz/Yosmite: A reader asked is anyone has tried using the Iomega Buz SCSI based video capture card in a new G3. Since most SCSI cards require a firmware update (as did the Fuse video capture card) I suspect it does not work but I welcome any Comments from owners that have tried this combo.

Apple Mach5 (250-350MHz) 604e Cards: Charles Bouldin wrote that ebay has some Apple 300MHz 604e cards for sale. Just a reminder that these only work in the 8600/250 and up and 9600/350 and up systems. They do not even boot in other systems (CPU supply voltage issue I belive). The Mach 5/9600 page (systems page has link) and FAQ has listed this info for some time but it's often overlooked. Remember to read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) first as it contains answers to many common questions.

News is a little light today. Tomorrow the plumbers will be coming in to rip out all the defective plastic piping in the house so I'm having to prepare for this today (moving items, cleanup, etc.) so I will not be able to respond to email today.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
