  01/24/99 - Sunday's News:
Current News Page

News is light today as it's the day I visit family. Kay and I went out yesterday until late and I didn't get to update the site or finish the yosemite IDE article but hope to do so tonight.

Happy Birthday Mac! As noted in yesterday's news, today is the 15th birthday of the Macintosh. It looks to be best year ever. Thanks to all of the original team that made this special computer a reality back in 1984, and changed the computing world forever. And special thanks to Woz, as without his technical genius there would never have been an Apple computer at all. Thanks also to Steve Jobs for giving Apple direction and vision that has turned around the company.

Smaller Heatsinks in recent G3 Cards: I'd heard it may be coming some time ago, since many companies feel the original 604 size heatsinks are overkill for the G3 CPU. Several readers report that the smaller heatinks are showing up on Powerlogix and other brands of cards. They are also noting higher temperatures (50C or more in some cases), still lower than the temperature noted in the my most recent CPU Card review of the Vimage G3/233 which also has a small heatsink. I saw no problems due to the higher temperature, but this will likely affect the overclocking capability of the adjustable speed cards (the Vimage is not adjustable however).

OSBooster and VPC/NT: More reader feedback on OS Booster (http://www.cogco.u-net.com/OSBooster/)

" Hi Mike,
yesterday i tried os booster 1.0.2 running virtual pc, the results i got was almost the same as i got before, here are the details, i'm running vpc with win nt 4.0 (with sp3) installed, using lwsn (lightwave screamer net) to render one frame from a scene over network, it took 748sec* and 753sec with os booster (i ran the same scene same frame twice in order to get the average), but without the os booster i got 751sec and 753sec, it shows no performance boost in this test, but i didn't run any other tests, i will run some more tests later.

here are my system's configuration, just for your reference, 7300 with PF220/110 (343/137/52.8 bus), 128mb ram, 9G HD, ATI xclaim vr.

*it took 127sec on a p2 [Pentium II] 392 nt machine.

Yosemite/Ult. Rez: A reader reports problem with his IXMicro Ultimate Rez install:

" Hi Mike,
Are you aware of any ixMicro Ultimate Rez compatibility issues? I've just purchased the Yosemite 350/DVD. I've so far been unable to have my second AppleVision 750 monitor work successfully with the Ultimate Rez card installed in the top PCI slot underneath the ATI card. I tried both the supplied driver/software and have also tried using the most current version 1.05 downloaded from their web site. Apparently this version fixes issues with DVD, however I am at a loss as how to proceed.

When I start my Yosemite with the second monitor plugged into the Ultimate Rez, it gradually turns on to steady flickering. I've even unchecked all acceleration features in the ixMicro control panel, the flickering problem persists, however.

If you're running a Ult. Rez in a new B&W G3, please contact me with specifics.

More Virtual Game Station/Yosemite Problem: Connectix wrote me with the reason why VGS does not run on some Yosemite models with DVD (noted in yesterday's news and in the Yosemite Compatibility page:

" Mike,
what this guy is having problems with is a known issue at Connectix. Apparently Apple uses several different vendors for their DVD-ROM drives, and one of the vendors' drives has some problems. if you check the manufacturer of the drive, it will identify itself as 'CD-ROM' or something like that. Connectix is aware of the issue and they're working on it, and hope to have a solution in the near future. "

Some readers said the problem was only with Sony DVD drives, but this reader's report says just the opposite, and links to a page with a modified CD/DVD driver that is said to allow it to work (the same mod we noted back when VGS was released, the ResExcellence article on CDrom extension hacks to add support for non-Apple drives)

" Hey Mike... I read a review of VGS this week, I think on Mac Gamer's Ledge.

http://www.macledge.com/Reviews99/VGS/VGS.chtml
Anyway... They were saying that VGS is programmed to work with Apple-branded CD-ROMs only. ***EXCEPT*** in the case of Yosemitie in which VGS works on the second run to leave the line which all have SONY CDs in them. It will only work if your Yose has a Sony in it [this contradicts the report I had from other readers that said the Sony drive was the problem one-Mike]. The problem is that the drives can't recognize the Sony Playstation Cd format. at the firmware level and it kicks out the CD. There is a workaround link given over there

Hope that helps.

I've added this info to the Yosemite Compatibility page.

8MB Game Wizard Sale: MicroConversions has a sale note on their front page that they have a limited quantity of 8MB Game Wizards (reviewed here) at $149. From my tests at the Yosemite Performance page my 8MB Game Wizard was just as fast at Unreal and Quake as the 12MB model (last week I bought a 12MB card as well). Call 877-986-4276 to order, they may already be sold out. Note: If you ever want to run SLI (scan line interlace mode), remember you'll need two identical cards. Just a reminder to existing 8MB card owners and new buyers, as the 8MB card has been discontinued. One other tip - on the PC running SLI I've mixed brands of cards before without problems, so SLI might work with some other brand of card perhaps (just a wild guess due to the driver check performed by the Game Wizard driver). That's assuming SLI will be supported, so far it has not surfaced but has been promised for some time now. [Thanks to Frank Bernier for the note on the sale.]

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
