  01/27/99 - Wednesday's News:
Current News Page

Frank sent another mega-dose of Mac Gaming news with info on everything from the Quake Arena beta to Villagetronic Banshee driver status. He's also got screenshots of a new Total Conversion for Unreal that includes a 'Get Well' message billboard for Dave, a reader who was involved in a terrible auto accident recently. [Update - Later game news pages are now Here]

Lonnie Robinson reports the Palm Pilot software locks up when running on the Yosemite (looking for the serial port I suspect). He's asked if a USB to Serial adapter would work - if you've tried this on your Yosemite please contact me.

= 4:00 PM Update =

I've split the Yosemite IDE Slave Drive Upgrade article into steps to reduce the page loading time. I've also updated the comments on the two IDE channel types with information from the developers notes. [Thanks to Colin Anderson for the dev note info.]

Devin Comisky wrote that IXMicro has a driver upgrade for all their IX3D chip based products (from Ult. Rez to Road Rocket) at: http://www.ixmIcro.com./ix3dmac.htm [link invalid after ixmicro closed their doors OWC's tech center page has mirrors of their last driver versions]. The update primarily addresses a bug with the Road Rocket and OS 8.5. No 3D/Rave improvements I'm told.

Boot Speedup Tip:

" Speed your restarts with OS 8.5. By default, the File Exchange control panel enables the "mount at startup" option for PC SCSI disks. If you notice, the control panel hangs as it looks for these PC devices at startup. Disable this feature (which is rarely needed) and shave 4+ seconds from your restarts (that was with my 3 drive UltraSCSI Wide striped array).
Jeff Cusick "

Sean Collins wrote to say the Apple TIL 58205 on the OEM U2 SCSI Card is back online with corrections (originally it mentioned narrow and UW SCSI connectors that are not on the OEM U2 cards). He noted that the TIL now has a different subject line and topic question.

Willi Murray sent a note in reply to recent Quark/Illustrator problems with the Yosemite noting that Pagemaker owners are also reporting problems in their User-to-User forum. He sent a quote from topic number 1407:

" when I use the pointer tool to select something it draws a zillion lines instead of a normal box, and leaves them on the screen. If I change page view to not see them and come back, they are gone. The object I selected, DOES get selected, but this is driving me crazy! "

Disabling the ATI Graphics Accelerator extension for Rage 128 card cures the problem. I can't wait for the updated Rage128 drivers due out soon I'm told. Hopefully it will put these issues to rest.

Yosemite IDE Slave Upgrade: Although I plan to divide it into separate pages due to length, I've posted the Yosemite IDE Slave Upgrade article. It's necessarily a little image heavy until I can break the pages up by steps. This will be linked in Wednesday's news as well (in process now).

XLR8 Cache Control 1.2 Feedback: Initial comments indicate the Retrospect issue with XLR8 G3 cards are solved by the new Control Panel:

" Seems to work well. Was able to backup 1.3GB of data, left screen saver (blackwatch), and file sharing on. But my Retrospect problems have been sporatic in the past. Sometimes a failed backup would complete if I rerun it. Retrospect 3.0A, with SCSI Manager 4.3, and blind transfers on.
Regards,
Ken "

If you missed yesterday's news, the control panel is available at XLR8's Software Page.

More B&W Compatibility Reports:

" Hi Mike,
I have come across two unresolved problems with my G3 Blue and White. I have attached an internal Jaz drive to the 50 pin connector on my Initio Miles card. The Jaz will boot if a cartridge is in the drive when the Mac starts up, but won't boot if it is inserted later. No help from Initio or Iomega support.

ATI XClaim VR card won't work in a G3 Blue & White, at least according to ATI tech support. I wanted to hook up two monitors to mine, as I had with my old Mac, but the machine simply doesn't recognize the card as being present. ATI is aware of the problem.
Regards,
Greg "

There was one report of success with an ATI VR card on the Yosemite Compatibility page. The latest update of that page also has more info on the quark issue with a screenshot sample showing the problem.

Phil Robinson sent a note that CDW seems to have a ZIP drive kit listed for the B&W G3s but as unable to get more information:

" I saw this item on CDW's web page. From the way it was described it sounded like it had to be ordered along with a new B&W G3 but I could not get anyone to confirm this or even what all is included. Perhaps you may have more luck...

APL-DRIVE, ZIP,ATAP1 BLUE/WHITE G3F

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.
