Mac Voodoo5 Review:
Due to several days of retesting with the 1.0 drivers it's not as complete as I'd like, but I've posted my review of the Mac Voodoo5. Included is 2D, 3D, Gaming and QT performance tests as well as a page on the Software Controls and card features. The summary page has an important tip on running a Voodoo5 card with an ATI card.

PowerTower Pro Firewire DV Capture Problems:
A reader with a PowerTower Pro and SIIG PCI firewire card reported problems capturing video even to a SCSI Cheetah drive.
Hi Mike:
I wanted to try and add firewire support to my aging Power Tower Pro 250 with xlr8 carrier Zif G3/466 card (@ 466/233/46.6). I'm running OS 8.6 and Speed Doubler 8.1.2 with VM off. The boot drive is a 10,000 rpm narrow 1st generation Cheetah (Atto says it sustains reads of 9.3 MB/sec and writes of 8.9 MB/sec). I also have the TurboMAX ATA/33 card in PCI slot #1 and a Seagate Barracuda 28G ATA/66 drive hooked to it.

I tried the Siig 3 port FireWire PCI card (with Ti chip) for Windoze PC's in PCI slot 4 -- it was a cheap $59 gamble and I had read a report about success with this card in a PM 7600. I used Firewire drivers 2.3.3 and then tried 2.4. QuickTime FireWire DV Enabler and QuickTime FireWire DV Support extensions (vers. 2.2) were also installed. The card is "seen" and I can operate my Canon Optura Pi MiniDV camcorder with iMovie 1.02 but there are artifacts during playback when capturing to the scsi-2 cheetah. It looks like the frame is split in the iMovie window. I thought that it might be related to @ 46.6 MHz bus speed as reported on your site by guest review but @ 50 MHz bus the artifacts remained.

I know my TurboMAX is not for video playback but I hoped my Cheetah would work. Perhaps iMovie doesn't like the boot drive for video capture but I think it's just the PC card is not working perfectly on my old PCI 2.0 Bandit controller. I'm returning it to our brand new local Abilene, TX Circuit City for a refund minus 15% restocking fee.

I may have to get a deal on an "old" single CPU G4 so that I can edit dv?
Best Regards,
Allan

Allan later said he had the same problems with the Firewire card in PCI Slot 2 (one suggestion I had was to move the card.) If any readers have a tip of suggestion to for Allan please let me know.

Rapster 1.0b11 Feedback:
Bob Friede reported problems with the beta11 update:

" A caveat on Rapster 1.0b11, from Barney's list. It crashed every time with a Type 1 error on startups here, and I recommend users stick with v1.0b10 for now. Still, these Brazilian developers are making real progress as far as the GUI is concerned. Macster, look out! (Both are freeware, of course.)
Rgds,
Bob Friede "

This may be some conflict with Bob's specific system. I welcome other Rapster beta11 user feedback.

Make a Difference: Be the Difference
Randy Mita, Brad Lau and I came up with a new slogan and theme for Mac advocacy - "Make a Difference: Be the Difference". We're asking that all Mac owners take advantage of every opportunity to let others know the Mac advantage. It's a grass-roots approach that will surely help.

Thanks to my wife, the ultimate computer widow
for putting up with all the time I spend with the site work, tests and email.
