Interesting Intech Comments on 6.0 Update to CDSpeedTools
(from an Intech email, later revised )

    " Mike
I read your post from Chris R. today. [yesterday's news, where Chris asked for better support for Combo DVD/CDRW drives with his Acard SCSI to IDE adapter-Mike] We've already added the support he is requesting to our upcoming 6.0 release (which we are working feverishly to get out the door this week).
The reason I mention this is that our 6.0 update has some VERY BIG surprises for FireWire CD/DVD drives running under Classic MacOS. Hint: we believe we've solved the vast majority of compatibility issues between software titles related to CD & DVD Recording such as Toast, iTunes, Disc Burner, Virtual Game Station, just to name a few. As long as the customer's drive supports basic MMC (multimedia commands), he should be in business. Stay tuned for our upcoming press release.
    Best regards,
    Christopher P. Karr

Most external CDRWs work with standard Toast installs and there have been tips to use Firewire DVD ROM drives with the Apple DVD player, but it would be nice to be able to use iDVD with an external Firewire DVD-R drive. (Maybe Apple will sell a version of iDVD2 without the internal drive check someday.) If the update also improves SCSI/IDE Adapter and IDE card ATAPI drive support that will be a plus for older Mac owners (like Chris) that have seen some issues with IDE card (which are seen as SCSI) working with Combo DVD/CDRW drives and the patched DVD player.

Addonics Portable Firewire 32x10x40x CDRW/DVD Combo Drive
Yesterday Cnet had a story on a Addonics Mobile Combo DVD/CDRW drive noting a 32x CDR, 12x CDRW [actually 10x] and 16x DVD ROM (max) speeds available in USB 2.0 ($279), Firewire ($299) and Cardbus/PCMCIA controller ($289) versions.
Although the Cnet article noted a 12x CDRW write speed, the Addonics product page here noted a 10x CDRW speed in the table (32x10x40x + 16x DVD ROM). The specs show a 8MB buffer also.
If anyone tries one of these with a Mac post a drive database report.

EyeTV 1.01 Software Update
(from a reader email - thanks John B.)

" We've released EyeTV 1.0.1! You can download it at:
    http://www.elgato.com/support/EyeTV101Update.hqx
It's 1.9 MB in size. Please give it a try, I'm confident that many of the issues you've encountered have been resolved. You can see what's new below.
    Thank you,
    Adam/El Gato Support

    What's new in this version?
    ---------------------------
The time to switch between channels has been reduced. Overall stability is improved. Get Info for a scheduled recordings now displays the correct channel, not the current 'live' channel. Copying a movie frame now works correctly when the movie is paused.

    Installation
    ------------
If you are updating from EyeTV 1.0, drag the EyeTV 1.0 application to the Trash. Drag the EyeTV 1.0.1 application to your previous install location (or wherever you like), then launch the new software. You'll be able to empty the Trash once you log out and back in.

If your EyeTV hardware does not receive any channels on cable
    -------------------------------------------------------------
We have recently been made aware of this issue. The EyeTV 1.0 and 1.0.1 software cannot tune to signals on a few cable television systems which (re)broadcast their signals using the HRC or IRC variations of the NTSC broadcast standard. This will be fixed very soon in our next software release. Customers that are affected by this issue should email support@elgato.com and updated software will be emailed to them as soon as it becomes available.

Dealing with blocky pixels or bad video quality
    -----------------------------------------------
If the EyeTV software has crashed or been force quit, it sometimes displays huge pixels or grainy video on screen after a relaunch. The solution is to unplug the EyeTV hardware, wait two or three seconds, and replug it. You do not need to restart your Macintosh or quit the EyeTV application."

Software for ReplayTV Transfers to Macs
A reader replied to the post in yesterday's news regarding transferring files from ReplyTV to a Mac with links to some software for doing that:

    " Hi, Mike
Here is some info and links regarding using a ReplayTV with a Mac:

    DVarchive - http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvarchive/
DVArchive allows you to archive shows from networked DVRs (i.e. ReplayTV 4000 & 4500) to a computer and then serve those archived programs back up to be played on your ReplayTV (or another DVArchive enabled computer).

    ReplayPC - http://replaypc.sourceforge.net/
ReplayPC is A simple text mode utility for extracting mpg files from ReplayTV Personal Video Recorders via TCP/IP (requires use of the OS X terminal - this works great if you don't mind using a terminal window)

    Replayer - http://www.forbesfield.com/replayer.html
I believe this one is similar to ReplayPC, but I've never used it.

Of the 3, DVarchive is the most polished and the most capable - it has a nice, fairly intuitive gui, and allows you to stream previously downloaded videos back to any Replay in your home (or another computer as well running the DVarchive software). Your Replay sees a computer running DVarchive as another Replay (i.e. the videos stored on your Mac are accessible from your Replay-equipped television)! It also allows you to manage the contents of your Replay, schedule programming from your computer, and probably other stuff as well. You can essentially use your Mac as a repository for archiving video from your Replay, to be watched on your computer or a Replay-equipped television whenever you want. You can't stream any old MPEG-2 back to a Replay - it must have been generated by a Replay machine originally.

For viewing videos on my Mac, I use VideoLan (vlc) http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ although I hear Quicktime 6 with an MPEG-2 plug-in would also work. I don't have a DVD burner or DVD authoring software, but I've heard that the Replay MPEG-2s can be burned straight to DVD without re-encoding (the anecdotes I've heard regarding this were from PC users - I don't know about the availability of similarly capable Mac software).
    Mike"

For guides to installing CD/CDRW/DVD drives or Hard drives in many mac models, see the IDE Articles page. The Firewire articles page also has guides on case kits, installing drives, etc.
If you've added a IDE, SCSI, Firewire or USB hard drive, CDRW, tape drive, etc. make sure you add a report to the database. [If you post an updated entry - make sure you use the same name, etc. as you did before so I can find your past entry. Thanks.]
(Entries today will be added the following newsday. Incomplete entries are deleted. Do not post questions in the database, it's for drive reports not questions on what drive to buy - for that try searching the database for reports from owners of your mac model on the drive type/brand/interface, etc. you're interested in.)
